Following the Battle of Endor, the New Republic successfully freed the planet of Rekkana.
Sometime in the period between 4 ABY and 5 ABY, after the significant Battle of Endor, which severely weakened the Empire, Rekkana fell under the control of an Imperial remnant commanded by Commodore Visler Korda. They proceeded to strengthen their military presence by establishing a work camp. Their objective was to produce scuttler walkers and droid brain-controlled TIE fighters, referred to as auto-fighters. Nevertheless, the inhabitants managed to transmit a distorted, yet comprehensible, distress signal. The Millennium Falcon intercepted this signal. Rebel heroes Lando Calrissian and Nien Nunb were aboard, as they were temporarily using the Falcon, which belonged to Han Solo. They immediately changed course towards Rekkana.

Upon exiting hyperspace, they were immediately attacked by a squadron of auto-fighters. Lando managed to destroy one before executing a maneuver where he allowed the TIEs to approach closely, then quickly moved out of their path, causing the TIEs to collide with each other due to their predictable flight patterns resulting from droid brain control. Back on Rekkana, Lieutenant Drosk informed Commodore Korda that the Falcon had escaped. This angered the commodore, who grabbed the lieutenant by his uniform and pushed him to the ground, ordering him to locate the Falcon.
After returning to the Falcon, Lando stealthily landed it within the foliage and observed the town. He noticed that the civilian population outnumbered the stormtroopers by a significant margin of nine to one. It appeared that the people had lost hope. He traced the distress call back to a holding cell, which he managed to enter discreetly. Inside, he discovered a smuggler and bounty hunter known as Jaxxon, who had been hired to rescue the planet's chancellor but had been captured himself. Jaxxon took Lando's blaster pistol and used it to blast open the door to the chancellor's cell. The pair assisted Asera in escaping her confinement, and Lando inquired about how he could liberate her people.

She explained that their morale had been diminished since the Empire had stolen their statue and symbol of hope, known as the Totem of Saglanost. Lando proposed that they retrieve it, to restore the people's hope and inspire them to fight back. However, Asera informed them that the totem had been moved off-world. Lando responded that he had allies who he believed could provide assistance. Before Lando could elaborate, a group of stormtroopers began firing at him, Asera, and Jaxxon. With some encouragement from Lando, Jaxxon managed to infiltrate one of the scuttlers and halt Korda by "accidentally" causing the scuttler to collapse on top of him. Subsequently, the trio departed the area and returned to the New Republic, with Lando and Asera boarding the Falcon, while Jaxxon boarded his ship, the Rabbit's Foot.
Upon arriving on Chandrila, C-3PO informed them that the Totem of Saglanost was located within the Palpatine Archive on Coruscant. Han stated that he would not permit them to take the Falcon to Courscant, as the planet was still under Imperial control and the Falcon would be immediately targeted. Therefore, the team decided to utilize the Rabbit's Foot to infiltrate the archive. They constructed a "piece of art" with Asera and Lando concealed inside, while Jaxxon disguised himself as an Imperial officer. An analysis droid greeted them and, despite being suspicious, escorted them further. It seemed as if the droid had been deceived by Jaxxon's ruse until he pilfered the Golden Agrooba of Metlok IV. The droid then declared that it knew he was merely a thief and commanded the royal guards stationed there to apprehend Jaxxon, initiating a pursuit.

Capitalizing on the distraction created by Jaxxon, Lando and Asera managed to slip away and search the database for the totem's location. As soon as Asera had identified its location, the guards discovered and began to chase them. However, Lando managed to topple a skeleton of a massive ancient creature, incapacitating the guards and allowing him and Asera to reach the lift. Inside, Asera revealed to Lando that they intended to melt the totem, just as the lift doors opened, revealing the totem about to be destroyed. But Lando was able to kick the labor droid into the melting pot and catch the totem in midair.
However, their triumph was short-lived. Upon returning to the Rabbit's Foot, the analysis droid, accompanied by two royal guards, awaited them, while another guard ambushed them from behind. Just when they believed their plan had succeeded, the guard behind Lando and Asura, who was actually Jaxxon in disguise, instructed his droid Mel to disrupt the balance of the guards and the droid. The plan was successful, and they managed to escape the archive with the totem.
The team arrived back on Rekkana just as Korda was preparing to showcase his new fleet to the New Republic via cam droids. However, his scheme was thwarted as the people, led by Lando, Jaxxon, and Asura, regained control of the planet by seizing control of the auto-fighters, compelling the droid starfighters to target the Imperials themselves. Although forced to return the Golden Agrooba of Metlok IV, Jaxxon received his payment and was persuaded by Lando to consider joining the New Republic.
