Rayencourt

Rayencourt, a human, held the esteemed position of Senator within the Galactic Republic's Senate during the High Republic Era. Holding anti-Jedi views, he perceived the Jedi Order as a potential threat and was actively pursuing the passage of an independent evaluation of the Order during the year 132 BBY. In that specific year, he uncovered that Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh was spearheading a murder investigation without proper Senate notification, leading him to report this revelation to Supreme Chancellor Drellik and confront Rwoh directly. Subsequently, he participated in a Senate tribunal where Rwoh presented a report on the aforementioned investigation. During this tribunal, Rwoh fabricated a narrative, falsely implicating the dead Jedi Master Sol as the perpetrator to conceal the actual truth. Rayencourt then utilized her report as justification for the immediate commencement of an external review of the Order, a request that Drellik ultimately disregarded.

Biography

Anti-Jedi campaign

During the closing decades of the High Republic Era, Rayencourt served as a human Senator representing the Galactic Republic. In 132 BBY, Rayencourt was actively working to secure the passage of an external review of the Jedi Order within the Galactic Senate, garnering increased support from his fellow senators in the process. The Mirialan Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh and Abednedo Senator Isedwa Chuwant engaged in a discussion regarding Rayencourt's growing influence within the Senate and his proposed review, with Chuwant relaying to Rwoh that senators from the Expansion Region were poised to vote in favor of the review.

Rwoh acknowledged that Rayencourt had never aligned himself with the Order's interests and voiced concerns that his anti-Jedi views had unduly influenced a significant number of others. However, Chuwant reassured her that there was no need to be apprehensive about the review, citing the Order's established history of transparency with the Senate, and characterizing Rayencourt as merely an ambitious senator seeking to consolidate his power.

Conversation with a Jedi

Rayencourt confronted Rwoh on his distrust of the Jedi Order.

Rayencourt later journeyed to the Jedi Temple, situated on the planet of Coruscant, to engage in a conversation with Rwoh. Padawan Mog Adana granted Rayencourt access to the control room, where he awaited the arrival of the Jedi Master. Rwoh entered the room by employing the Force to manipulate the door's mechanism, offering him a greeting. Rayencourt offered an apology to Rwoh for his intrusion, prompting Rwoh to inquire about the urgency that necessitated his uninvited visit to the Temple. Rayencourt elucidated that he had become aware of the Jedi's involvement in a murder investigation without any formal notification to the Senate. The Jedi Master countered by asserting her authority to maintain such matters internally in the absence of a broader threat, attempting to allay the human's suspicions by emphasizing that all victims were Jedi. She further added that the apprehension of the suspect was imminent. Rayencourt then questioned whether the suspect was a Jedi, but Rwoh evaded the question, expressing her gratitude for his concern and attempting to exit the room.

Rayencourt intervened, clarifying that, contrary to her assumptions, his pursuit of an external review was not driven by personal animosity towards the Jedi Order. He proceeded to articulate his perception of the Jedi as a misguided cult wielding unchecked power and claiming to control emotions, a notion he deemed inherently impossible. He questioned the existence of any authority capable of restraining a Jedi who might succumb to instability and turn rogue. Before departing the control room, he also informed the Mirialan that he had notified Supreme Chancellor Drellik of the Jedi Master's lack of transparency, advising her to ensure the murder suspect was in custody by the time Drellik summoned her for a Senate tribunal.

Senate tribunal

Vernestra Rwoh deceived the Senate tribunal about the truth behind the murders.

Rayencourt was among the senators present at the tribunal he had cautioned Rwoh about. Rwoh reported that sixteen years prior, a group of four Jedi had participated in a mission to the planet Brendok, where their actions resulted in the destruction of a Force cult composed of witches. She misled the tribunal by asserting that Jedi Master Sol had gone rogue when the truth regarding those events was at risk of exposure, and subsequently hunted down the other three Jedi involved. In reality, the true perpetrator was the Force-sensitive assassin Mae Aniseya. Rayencourt and Drellik exchanged a glance when Rwoh alluded to Sol's alleged murder of his comrades. Rwoh affirmed that the Jedi High Council condemned Sol's actions, but Rayencourt proposed to the Tarsunt Chancellor that an immediate external review of the Order was imperative given the events Rwoh had described. Drellik remained unresponsive to the Senator's proposition, instead directing his inquiry to Rwoh regarding the fate of the rogue Jedi. The Mirialan explained that Sol's corpse had been discovered on Brendok, speculating that he might have taken his own life, although in truth he was killed by his former Padawan Osha Aniseya.

Personality and traits

Rayencourt, Galactic Senator

Rayencourt was a dark-skinned human characterized by brown eyes, black hair, and a height of 1.78 meters. He was a skeptical representative who harbored a profound aversion towards the Jedi Order, questioning their integrity and viewing them as a delusional cult wielding unchecked authority. He attributed his fellow senators' favorable perception of the Jedi to a form of hero worship. Despite his antipathy towards the Order, Rayencourt maintained that his efforts to initiate an external review were not fueled by personal vendettas, but rather by genuine safety concerns, expressing doubt that anyone could effectively restrain a Jedi who lost control of their emotions.

Upon discovering that Vernestra Rwoh had concealed a Jedi investigation from the Senate, he confronted her regarding her actions and also alerted the Chancellor to her conduct. Despite Rayencourt's anti-Jedi sentiments, he was familiar with the Order's saying "May the Force be with you" and was aware that Rwoh experienced nausea in hyperspace, although he mistakenly attributed the problem to her stomach, when in reality it was related to her head.

Equipment

During his exchange with Vernestra Rwoh, Rayencourt donned multiple layers of clothing, including wine-red robes partially concealed by a cream-colored layer adorned with a black and gold hexagon pattern. Sections of the latter layer were connected by strings of white-gold beads, and the ensemble also included shoes and a necklace featuring a prominent pendant. Rayencourt subsequently wore a similar outfit to the Senate tribunal, substituting the uppermost layer for one with a red and gold hexagon pattern.

Behind the scenes

Rayencourt was initially referenced in "Teach / Corrupt," the sixth episode of the live-action Disney+ series The Acolyte, which was released on July 2, 2024. The senator made his inaugural appearance in the eighth episode, "The Acolyte," which debuted on July 16 of the same year. In that episode, he was portrayed by David Harewood.
