Shuggoth

Around the time of 9 ABY, a Quarren named Shuggoth held the rank of captain, leading the crew of a freighter. During this period, she developed a romantic connection with a Mon Calamari prince, and the two chose to run away together aboard the captain's starship. However, the prince's father, the viceroy, engaged a group of Mandalorian mercenaries under the leadership of Axe Woves to locate Shuggoth and bring his son back home. As Woves' light cruiser neared the Quarren freighter, the captain of the freighter, assuming the larger starship belonged to the Imperial forces, tried to initiate talks to ensure the safety of her vessel. Woves, however, communicated his purpose to Shuggoth. When a Mandalorian team boarded the freighter's bridge to capture the prince, the captain and her beloved were compelled to bid each other a sorrowful farewell.

Biography

An encounter in space

Captain Shuggoth commanded a freighter crewed by Quarrens.

In the era of 9 ABY, Shuggoth, a Quarren originating from the planet Mon Cala in the Outer Rim Territories, held the position of captain over a small freighter manned by a Quarren crew. At one juncture, she became romantically involved with a Mon Calamari prince, who was the son of a viceroy. The captain chose to elope with the prince, bringing him onto her freighter and venturing into the depths of space to avoid detection by their respective families. During their journey, Shuggoth would spend time submerged in her private saltwater tank located on the starship's bridge, where a crew member would fed her a goldfish. To Shuggoth's delight, the ship's navigator informed her of their discovery of a route that circumvented the established hyperspace trade routes leading to the moon of Trask. However, at that moment, another crewmember also alerted the captain to the approach of a Class 546 Cruiser. It appeared to be under the control of Imperial military forces, but was actually commanded by a Mandalorian mercenary force led by Axe Woves, who had been hired by the Mon Calamari viceroy to find Shuggoth and retrieve his son.

Upon realizing that their freighter stood no chance against the larger light cruiser, Shuggoth instructed her crew to establish communication with the vessel's commander and ordered the water to be drained from the tank she was in. The captain then contacted the capital ship, addressing the perceived Imperial crew as "friends" and stating that her ship was a "peaceful" freighter en route to the Mid Rim for commercial purposes. Shuggoth feigned ignorance of any Imperial warlords in the area to whom tributes would be due, to which Woves responded via comm that he was not a "criminal." The Quarren captain quickly apologized, correcting her statement to acknowledge the larger ship as part of "the majestic Imperial presence" in their sector. Shuggoth then suggested that her freighter hire the protection offered by the light cruiser, a proposal Woves countered by revealing that his ship was operated by a force of hired Mandalorians.

Lovers parted

Shuggoth was separated from her lover, a Mon Calamari prince.

As the capital ship prepared for its crew to board the Quarren freighter, the freighter's captain protested, calling it an act of war, an accusation Woves promptly dismissed. The Mandalorian leader informed Shuggoth of his employer, leading the captain to denounce the viceroy's claims that she had run away with her son as lies. The freighter's captain launched into a rant about her supposed lack of interest in exacerbating the historically strained relationship between the Quarren and Mon Calamari, only for Woves to reveal his awareness of Shuggoth's romantic feelings for the runaway prince.

At that point, the distraught prince entered the freighter's bridge, joining in the verbal objections against the plan to return him home. In response, Woves warned that he would damage Shuggoth's ship if the Mon Calamari did not comply. Urged by the Mandalorian, Shuggoth then attempted to persuade her lover to return home. The captain ultimately declared her eternal love for the prince. At that moment, a Mandalorian boarding party also entered the vessel's bridge, and as the Mon Calamari was taken away, Shuggoth encouraged him, claiming that they would meet again. After the Mandalorians led the prince out of the bridge, the captain returned to her command chair.

Personality and traits

The Mon Calamari prince Shuggoth fell in love with

Shuggoth, a female Quarren with orange skin and dark eyes, possessed a diplomatic nature. Upon encountering a warship that her freighter could not defeat in combat, the captain initiated communication with the vessel, using increasingly flattering forms of address as her assumptions about the other ship proved incorrect.

Shuggoth developed a deep love for a Mon Calamari prince, even eloping with him. She was willing to lie and engage in a misleading tirade to prevent others from interfering with their relationship. After being confronted with the unavoidable end of her relationship due to the prince being forcibly taken away, Shuggoth briefly mentioned her unwillingness to let her "childish fling" negatively impact her achievements in life. However, after the prince reacted to that comment, the captain claimed that it did not reflect her true feelings, which she professed to be of everlasting love. During their final moments together on the bridge of her ship, Shuggoth briefly and affectionately touched the Mon Calamari's face with her facial tentacles.

Skills and abilities

Shuggoth was fluent in Quarrenese and also spoke Galactic Basic Standard as a second language. After she mistakenly referred to the Mandalorian mercenary Axe Woves as a warlord, assuming he was an Imperial officer, only to be corrected by Woves that he was not a criminal, Shuggoth attributed the misunderstanding to her imperfect command of Basic.

Equipment

Shuggoth wore a green uniform consisting of a long-sleeved tunic, pants, and dark brown boots. She also wore a patch with an emblem on both shoulders of her tunic. On the bridge of Shuggoth's freighter, her command chair was positioned above an area of the floor that could be recessed to reveal a transparent tank. This tank could be filled with saltwater, allowing the captain to spend time immersed in it.

Behind the scenes

Shuggoth made her debut in "Chapter 22: Guns for Hire," the sixth episode of the third season of the Disney+ television series The Mandalorian. The episode was broadcast on April 5, 2023.
