The Jedi Who Knew Too Much

title: The Jedi Who Knew Too Much

The eighteenth episode of the fifth season of the television show Star Wars: The Clone Wars is called "The Jedi Who Knew Too Much." It was originally broadcast on February 16, 2013.

Official description

"Ahsoka finds herself in disagreement with Admiral Tarkin as the Republic military assumes control of the Temple bombing investigation."

Plot summary

Yoda, a Master of the Jedi Order, delivers a eulogy inside the Jedi Temple. He is commemorating the Jedi who perished during the explosion. High-ranking Jedi and Republic officials are present. During the speech, Ahsoka Tano notices that Barriss Offee appears to be in intense mourning, and she inquires if Barriss was close to any of the deceased. Barriss responds that she and Tutso Mara were training partners, and Yoda urges the attendees to "live for the living."

Following the funeral service, Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka, and Barriss return to their duties alongside Admiral Tarkin. Ahsoka objects when Tarkin announces that Letta Turmond, the individual responsible for bombing the Jedi Temple, has been transferred to military custody, arguing that she should have remained under Jedi jurisdiction. Anakin advises Ahsoka to console Barriss, as she is visibly distraught. While in the elevator with Tarkin, Anakin expresses his concern that Ahsoka still has a lot of growing up to do.

Ahsoka is summoned to the war room while she and Barriss are discussing the significance of detaching oneself from emotions as a Jedi. Upon arrival, Tarkin interrupts a report from Obi-Wan Kenobi to inform her that Letta Turmond has requested to speak with Ahsoka exclusively. Ahsoka consents to the meeting and promises to report back with any information she obtains.

Upon reaching the facility, Letta reveals that she was instructed to contact Ahsoka if she ever needed assistance. Ahsoka requests privacy when it becomes apparent that Letta is hesitant to speak openly. Letta then discloses that the plan to bomb the temple originated not from her, but from a Jedi. She asserts that many believe the Jedi have transformed into instruments of war rather than upholders of peace, and that a Jedi concurred with this sentiment and bombed the temple as a form of protest. Fearing potential harm from this Jedi, she seeks Ahsoka's protection. Ahsoka refrains from making a promise, but urges Letta to provide more information. Just as Letta is about to reveal the Jedi's identity, she is Force choked and dies.

The clone troopers observe security camera footage that seemingly depicts Ahsoka choking Letta. They storm into the cell and discover Letta's lifeless body, leading to Ahsoka's immediate arrest as the prime suspect. Tarkin later arrives to confront her, presenting the video recording of Letta's death, which lacks audio.

Anakin's attempt to visit her is denied under Tarkin's orders. Sometime later, Ahsoka notices a key card outside her cell. Assuming it was placed there by her master, she uses it to escape. However, as she navigates the corridors, she encounters injured clones. She discovers her lightsaber and comlink beside the clones. At that moment, Commander Fox enters the scene and swiftly triggers the emergency alert. Ahsoka flees down the corridors. As Fox prepares to issue a comlink alert with instructions to shoot on sight, Anakin countermands the order. He attempts to call out to his Padawan, urging her to return and await judgment. She responds that he is the only one who truly believes in her, and continues to run.

Anakin instructs the clones to capture her alive. When she is spotted above a statue, a chase ensues, leading her into the industrial areas in an attempt to evade the clones. Eventually, they corner her, and she loses her shoto while deflecting their stun blasts. She leaps onto a nearby pipe and escapes through the pipe system. Anakin eventually intercepts her at an outlet leading to a vertical shaft. She declares that she will not accept punishment for a crime she did not commit. As Rex and Fox approach from behind Anakin, she implores him to trust her and jumps from the pipe onto a passing ship, successfully escaping.

Development

Tarkin and Tano's interaction in the prison cell was based upon Tarkins conversation with Leia Organa in A New Hope

The title of this episode is a reference to Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much from 1934. The design of the Republic base was intentionally created to foreshadow the emergence of the Galactic Empire. Furthermore, it was strategically positioned near the Venator staging areas that were previously featured in Revenge of the Sith. Similarly, the staging of the interaction between Tarkin and Tano in her prison cell closely mirrors that of Tarkin and Leia Organa aboard the Death Star in A New Hope. Ahsoka's declaration of innocence to Anakin prior to jumping from a water pipe to avoid capture is an allusion to the 1993 film The Fugitive, starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones.
