Plot summary

Outrunning Naare

Naare pursuing the Freemakers

Naare's day begins on The Wheel with a seemingly pleasant demeanor, until Roger suggests she return at a later time. Utilizing her blue lightsaber, she forcefully enters the Freemaker Garage, only to find the Freemakers positioned advantageously above. Rowan then exposes her true allegiance. Naare declares, "The Jedi are all gone. Destroyed by people like me," as she uses the Force to push Rowan from the lift. He struggles to maintain his footing while he, Roger, and his siblings make their escape in the StarScavenger, leaving Naare behind to emit a scream of rage.

Naare gives chase in her Eclipse Fighter. Now fleeing with Naare relentlessly pursuing them after the StarScavenger loses its rear deflector, Zander accelerates, attempting to evade her in the heavy traffic. During the chase, Naare appears as a hologram and issues an ultimatum: surrender Rowan to her, and she might spare their lives. Zander responds by severing the Eclipse Fighter's wings, allowing them to jump into hyperspace.

Zander is clearly disturbed by the revelation, and Roger exacerbates his distress by stating that, in his assessment, the Jedi were the true antagonists of the Clone Wars. When Zander corrects Roger, asserting that the battle droids were the actual villains, Roger's processors become overloaded. Kordi confesses that she suspected Naare's evil nature from the beginning, but Rowan is disheartened by the fact that she had promised to train him as a Jedi. The damaged quantum field regulator detaches, and the StarScavenger is forced to land on the planet Takodana, where they seek sanctuary within the castle belonging to Maz Kanata.

Hondo's assignment

Hondo and his gang at Maz Kanata's castle

Upon landing, Zander is apprehended by the Dowutin hunter Grummgar and another human gangster and brought before their captain, the gangster Hondo Ohnaka. Hondo demands payment for the minor damage caused to his ship by the StarScavenger's crash landing. Before Hondo and his crew can inflict harm on Zander and Rowan, Maz Kanata intervenes, reminding the pirates to conduct themselves appropriately. Kordi then resolves the situation by offering the Freemakers' services to Hondo as compensation, suggesting they leave the StarScavenger as collateral. Hondo agrees to Kordi's proposition and dispatches the four Freemakers to the third moon to retrieve a specific item. Intrigued, Rowan attempts to enter Maz's vault, but she denies him access, stating that only she is permitted inside.

Later, Kordi briefs her brothers and Roger on their mission. She explains that Hondo wants them to recover three golden orbs, expressing suspicion that there is a hidden challenge since he was unable to accomplish it himself. Unable to utilize the StarScavenger, the Freemakers travel in their compact Mini Scavenger. Back on the Wheel, with her fighter severely damaged, Naare is confronted by Graballa, Baash, Raam, Dengar, and two other Tatooine rogues. She decides to form an alliance with the Hutt, who is also pursuing the Kyber Saber crystals. In exchange for Graballa's crew repairing her ship, Naare commits to sharing the profits from the crystal with Graballa, who intends to construct his beachside resort and buffet. Although Naare is unaware of the crystals' location, she informs him that she knows Rowan's whereabouts.

Rowan's trial

Rowan reasoning with the varactyls

Following an uncomfortable journey, the Freemakers and Roger land their Mini Scavenger on the third moon of Takodana. Rowan locates the sinkhole containing the golden orbs, but discovers that it is inhabited by numerous varactyls. They opt to wait until nightfall. Rowan is assigned the role of "snipe spotter," while Roger is tasked with directly retrieving the golden orbs. That night, the Freemakers pilot their scavenger vessel over the sleeping varactyls and lower Roger into the pit. Driven by greed, Kordi instructs Roger to collect more than three golden orbs. However, Roger's grip is unsteady, and he drops the orbs, awakening the varactyls.

The varactyls hurl the Freemakers' scavenger vessel around like a soccer ball and dismantle Roger. Jumping into the pit, Rowan brandishes Naare's crimson lightsaber to defend against the creatures, and he soon realizes that the golden orbs are eggs. He briefly contemplates the dark side but chooses to remain faithful to the light side. Understanding that it is wrong to take the eggs, Rowan uses the Force to communicate with the varactyls and establish peace. The next morning, Kordi acknowledges that he is special, bolstering his courage to confront Hondo with the truth. Meanwhile, Zander repairs Roger, who mentions "patting Zander on the back."

Facing Hondo

Back at the castle, Hondo is joking about throwing opponents through airlocks when he is confronted by the Freemakers. Rowan informs him that the "golden orbs" belong to the varactyls. One of Hondo's human crew members explains that varactyl eggs command a high price on the black market. Displeased with the Freemakers, Hondo orders his men to break their heads. Before they can harm the Freemakers, Maz evicts Hondo and his two subordinates, banning them from being tenants. She rewards the Freemakers with a new quantum regulator for a Class-D cargo container and a Kyber Saber crystal she discovered on Rodia, instructing Rowan to seek out the Maker of Zoh as he leaves.
