The Traveler

Once known as Idzuna, and later called Fox by some, the Traveler was a non-binary individual with Force-sensitivity who existed in the era after the Sith rebellion had concluded. This musician and teller of tales always kept their face hidden behind a white mask resembling a fox.

On the world of Genbara, situated in the Outer Rim, the Traveler crossed paths with the former Sith wanderer known as the Ronin and his droid, B5-56. Deciding to accompany the Ronin and his droid on their journey, the Traveler followed the road that led to the Osou spaceport. Upon their arrival at the spaceport, they separated from the pair and encountered a Gran guard who had previously witnessed the Ronin exposing his Sith identity during a duel with a Sith bandit leader in a nearby village. The Traveler then sought out the Ronin, the Gran, and a group of bounty hunters.

Biography

Life and death on Rei'izu

In the era following the Sith rebellion and the subsequent reunification of rival lords into the revitalized Empire, the Traveler was a Force-sensitive, non-binary being. Sometime later, they were known as Idzuna and carried a scion's blade, indicating their status as the bloodline heir of a Jedi clan. As a Jedi, their master was the Jedi lord Hanrai. The rebellion had ended on the planet Rei'izu, and Hanrai thought there might still be Sith living on that world. Therefore, he dispatched Idzuna alone to eliminate any remaining Sith presence found there. Instead, within Shinsui Temple, Idzuna discovered Mirahi, a child who was the daughter of the dark lord who had headed the rebellion and the witch he had betrayed. Unable to abandon or kill the child, the Jedi chose to raise and mentor her in the black current and white flare of the Force. Due to their disappearance, Hanrai eventually told their parents that he had lost Idzuna.

For a number of years, Idzuna dedicated themself to nurturing Mirahi's special connection with the kyber mirror of Shinsui Temple. However, Mirahi became obsessed with the mirror and what she could perceive and access through it. When she declared her intention to destroy the Jedi and the princes, Idzuna tried to shield her from herself. They called upon the black current, intending to shatter the mirror, but Mirahi reacted violently and unintentionally killed them.

Their accidental death was short-lived; without intending to, Mirahi resurrected and bound their ghost as the first Sith demon of her own making. Subsequently, their memories of their previous life became unreliable. They transformed into "the Traveler," a musician and storyteller who claimed to have witnessed and heard many things throughout their existence.

Meeting the Ronin

The Traveler was on the planet Genbara, where they encountered the Ronin.

Two decades after the rebellion, the Traveler found themself on the Outer Rim Territories planet of Genbara. They were sitting among a cluster of trees surrounding the buried front of a wrecked starship, practicing their flute. As they played, the wandering former dark lord, now only known as the Ronin, approached along a road that passed by the Traveler's location. The Ronin was accompanied by his astromech droid, B5-56, and commented on the Traveler's music, responding to the voice in his head. The Traveler replied, asking if the wanderer was heading to the nearby Osou spaceport. Although the Ronin had not planned to visit the spaceport, he decided to share the journey with the Traveler, who jumped down from the rock to join him and the droid.

As the three walked together, the Traveler offered to share a story, noticing the Ronin's lightsaber scabbards and trying to learn the wanderer's name. When he didn't respond, the storyteller turned to B5-56, who revealed his partner's name as Master Ronin. In response, the Traveler bowed their head thoughtfully before introducing themself as such. The group continued along the path, with the Traveler chatting with B5-56 while the Ronin remained slightly behind. Upon reaching a crossroads, they turned towards the spaceport, followed by the astromech and the Ronin.

Confrontation at the spaceport

By the afternoon, the group had joined a makeshift caravan of vehicles and pedestrians. The storyteller welcomed the attention that the other travelers gave to them and their companions, sharing stories with them. When the conversation shifted to the supposed tales of the Sith dark lord and his witch, who was rumored to be raising an army of the dead, attention turned to the Traveler. The storyteller suggested that stories about the dead often held some truth, an answer that pleased some of the others.

After meeting the Ronin, the Traveler learned of his identity as a Sith.

As the caravan continued, it began to disperse, with the remaining members rushing towards Osou's gates as it started to rain. The Traveler chose to stay under the shelter of a nearby tree, observing the rain curiously before offering the Ronin some fruit given to them by one of the women from the caravan. The Ronin, suspicious that the fruit was poisoned, was scolded by the Traveler, who explained its origin. Noticing the Ronin's silence, the Traveler asked if they had been insufficiently dramatic, once again noting his weapon and its illegal nature, warning him to be cautious upon reaching the spaceport. Soon after, the rain stopped, and the trio ventured on to Osou spaceport, where the Traveler parted ways with the Ronin, finding both the local cantina and teahouse vying for their services.

At the cantina, however, the Traveler encountered a Gran guard who spoke of a Sith's presence in a village to the south, the direction from which the Ronin had come—the former Sith had dueled and defeated the Sith bandit Kouru there. Realizing that the Ronin would have mentioned such an event, the Traveler sought out their former traveling companion, recounting what the Gran had told them. The Ronin asked if their words were a warning, and the Traveler replied that it was only a warning if the former Sith needed one. However, it was too late, as the Ronin was confronted by the Gran and several bounty hunters. The Ronin escaped, but was later attacked by Kouru, who had been revived after their duel.

Personality and traits

A non-binary individual, the Traveler possessed solid white eyes and white hair worn in a knot at the back of their head. They were not human, and the Ronin could not identify their species. While attempting to determine if he recognized the Traveler, he perceived them to be old enough that he would have expected to know them, had they been a fellow Sith.

After the former Sith chose not to reveal his identity, being named the Ronin by B5-56, the Traveler likewise identified themself with a similar name. They were nicknamed "Fox" by their crewmates on the Poor Crow. When Chie and Hanrai addressed them as Idzuna, the name they bore in life, they would flinch.

Despite their face being hidden behind their mask, the Traveler's voice was lively upon first meeting the Ronin, and their tone smiled. They spoke with the smooth cadence of a storyteller, sharing tales with a bright and compelling voice and seizing the opportunity to do so upon encountering a caravan while traveling with the Ronin. As they imparted knowledge to the caravan on the road to Osou spaceport, they spoke knowing that they would be listened to.

The Traveler was intrigued by the Ronin, as well as the wanderer's warrior-like appearance and the lightsaber and scabbard he carried. When the Traveler confronted the Ronin after learning of his true nature, they frowned behind their mask, giving the former Sith an implied warning. However, the Ronin did not sense any particular animosity in the Traveler, but instead only a hint of curiosity and a degree of focus.

Powers and abilities

The Traveler possessed a significant talent for the black current of the Force. By the time the Ronin met them, their presence was almost entirely of the current rather than the white flare of the Force. They were skilled at concealing themself and others from being noticed.

Equipment

The Traveler wore a white vulpine mask with red slashes at the mouth and brows, concealing their face. They sported simple clothing consisting of a kimono over trousers, both of which were white but had a faded appearance suggesting they once held color. The Traveler also had a wrap thrown over their shoulder, used to store items such as the flute they played.

Behind the scenes

The Traveler appeared in the 2021 novel Ronin: A Visions Novel, penned by Emma Mieko Candon as a tie-in to the Star Wars: Visions short film "The Duel." Their reveal occurred in an excerpt for the novel released by Penguin Random House.

Candon confirmed via Tumblr that the Traveler is nonbinary and addressed the topic of the Traveler's species, stating that their species intentionally was not revealed. After considering some possibilities on the Star Wars fan wiki Wookieepedia, Candon decided that leaving the character's species ambiguous would play well into their characterization and dynamic with the Ronin.
