Treuten Teradoc

A warlord named Treuten Teradoc, a human male, rose to prominence following the fall of the Galactic Empire. Teradoc, formerly an officer in the Imperial Navy, established his power base after the Battle of Endor. With the death of Emperor Palpatine at Endor, the Empire lacked leadership and orders from Coruscant ceased. Teradoc then declared himself ruler of the Greater Maldrood, encompassing the area around his base on Centares and the Maldrood sector where he had been previously stationed. Hailing from Er'Kit, Teradoc secured control of several crucial resource worlds for his new domain. However, his proximity to the splinter empire of Grand Moff Zsinj led to a rivalry between the two warlords. Over the next few years, Teradoc was kept busy by border conflicts with Zsinj and the New Republic's limitations on his expansion, with the New Republic's advances into Imperial territory further isolating him. Following her decline, Teradoc briefly aided Ysanne Isard, the Empire's former steward. Eventually, Teradoc merged his Mid Rim territories with the Deep Core holdings of his brother, Kosh, forming the Federated Teradoc Union.

After Zsinj's demise at the Battle of Dathomir, Teradoc attempted to seize Zsinj's former territories, but he soon found himself in a war against Teren Rogriss of the Empire and Gial Ackbar of the New Republic. As New Republic forces closed in, Teradoc was compelled to retreat to the Deep Core, where he re-established his power with his formidable military. Despite Grand Admiral Thrawn's efforts to unify Imperial factions, Teradoc remained aloof until a new power emerged on Byss: the reborn Emperor Palpatine, operating in secret. Teradoc and other warlords and Imperial factions joined Palpatine's reunited Empire, launching a highly successful war against the New Republic until Palpatine's final death and the destruction of Byss. Teradoc, commanding the largest warlord military, returned to his kingdom and recruited Vice Admiral Gilad Pellaeon to lead his Crimson Command. Soon, Teradoc became embroiled in a conflict with Blitzer Harrsk, a Deep Core warlord seeking to expand his influence. Their private war was interrupted by Admiral Natasi Daala, who, with Pellaeon's assistance, forced the warlords to negotiate. Daala summoned Teradoc, Harrsk, and eleven other powerful Deep Core warlords to a conference at Tsoss Beacon. When they failed to reach an agreement, Daala had all thirteen warlords, including Teradoc, executed.

Biography

Warlord of the Greater Maldrood

Treuten Teradoc, born to a lower-class family on the planet Er'Kit, had a lifelong rival in his younger brother, Kosh. Despite their frequent disagreements, the Teradoc brothers shared a desire for action and adventure, leading them to enlist in the Imperial Navy. They both studied at the Imperial Academy on Corulag, where they excelled in naval theory. Constantly competing, the Teradoc brothers both achieved the rank of captain around the same time and were assigned to Crimson Command, a rapid-response task force of one hundred Victory-class Star Destroyers with distinctive red havod alloy hulls operating in the Quelii Oversector. However, their rivalry took a new turn when Zsinj promoted Treuten Teradoc to High Admiral over Kosh, a fact that Treuten never missed an opportunity to flaunt.

By the time of the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, Teradoc was stationed in the Maldrood sector. Following the death of Emperor Palpatine in the battle, the Empire was left without direction. Soon after, Admiral Blitzer Harrsk led his fleet into the Deep Core to establish an independent [warlord](/article/warlord-legends] kingdom. With no orders forthcoming from Coruscant, Teradoc followed suit just days later. He focused on the Mid Rim, offering protection to several Imperial worlds with his Crimson Command and incorporating their planetary militias into his growing forces. After placing Grand Moff Ambris Selit under house arrest, Teradoc established his own kingdom, the Greater Maldrood, with his headquarters and capital on the planet Centares. Styling himself High Admiral, Teradoc expanded his control along the Perlemian Trade Route, securing systems such as the shipyards at Abhean and Thanos, the industrial planets of Belderone, Charros IV, Metalorn, and Roche, the trade center of Bimmisaari, and the critical agriworld Balamak. With these resources, Teradoc maintained a self-sufficient empire.

Teradoc quickly settled into a comfortable lifestyle, indulging in food and avoiding combat. He achieved a major victory by stealing the vast treasure of Space Station Scardia, adopting the persona of a swashbuckling rogue and wielding a cutlass on his flagship, the 13X. While nominally loyal to the Empire, Teradoc offered protection to wealthy citizens, undermining the authority of Sate Pestage, the Empire's leader at the time. After Pestage's downfall, former Imperial Moff Leonia Tavira joined Teradoc, receiving the Invidious, an Imperial-class Star Destroyer that had been with his fleet since Endor.

While thriving in his own [space](/article/realspace-legends], Teradoc was preoccupied with his hatred of the New Republic and the Hutts, whose territory bordered his. He also found himself in competition with Grand Moff Zsinj, who had established his own warlord kingdom to the galactic north of the Maldrood, leading to several border skirmishes. Teradoc's border with Zsinj was also targeted by the Mon Calamari, seeking revenge for Imperial treatment of their species. In 5 ABY, Teradoc's ambitions were thwarted when New Republic forces from Kashyyyk won a costly victory at Togoria. By the next year, the New Republic had advanced so far into Imperial space that Teradoc and his kingdom became isolated. When the New Republic took Coruscant that year, Teradoc abandoned his pretense of loyalty to the Empire.

Following the fall of Coruscant, Ysanne Isard, the Empire's steward, established herself as a warlord on Thyferra, home of the Bacta Cartel. Teradoc traded matériel for bacta to replace her losses against the New Republic. He also leased the Interdictor cruiser Aggregator, part of his anti-Rebel task force, to Isard at a high price. However, lacking faith in her, Teradoc refused to allow his own personnel to fly the Aggregator's TIE fighter complement, instead using her own Thyferran Home Defense Corps. They were unable to withstand the New Republic, and the Aggregator was ambushed by Rogue Squadron in the Alderaan system and forced to retreat. To dissuade Teradoc from further aid, the Rogues spread rumors that they would capture his next [ship](/article/starship-legends]. Angered by the damage to his ship, Teradoc withdrew the Aggregator from Isard's service.

In 8 ABY, Teradoc clashed with both Zsinj and the New Republic. In dire straits, he called on his brother Kosh, who had established his own empire in the Deep Core, for assistance. Kosh came to Treuten's aid, and together they merged their holdings into the Federated Teradoc Union. The brothers generally cooperated, although they briefly clashed when Leonia Tavira played them against each other. After Zsinj's death in the Battle of Dathomir, Teradoc declared himself "High Admiral of the Mid Rim" and moved quickly to secure the worlds of the Gordian Reach. However, he became embroiled in a war between Admirals Teren Rogriss of the Empire and Gial Ackbar of the New Republic. Teradoc beat Rogriss at Feriae Junction, gaining the allegiance of several of Zsinj's ships, but Ackbar in turn soundly defeated Teradoc at Maridun and Thanos. Teradoc's hit-and-run attacks annoyed the other combatants, but with New Republic forces closing in, he was forced to abandon the Maldrood and flee to the Deep Core world of Hakassi, where he used his large fleet to establish himself as a regional power.

In 9 ABY, Grand Admiral Thrawn united several warlord factions to wage war on the New Republic, but Teradoc and the other Deep Core warlords declined to participate. Following Thrawn's death, Teradoc was among the first approached by agents of a new power broker on Byss: Emperor Palpatine, resurrected in a new clone body and operating covertly. Teradoc answered the Emperor's call, and the scattered Imperial factions reunited. They launched a war against the New Republic, striking from the Deep Core to seize Coruscant and other key Core Worlds. Teradoc performed poorly in this conflict, and was once ordered back to the Deep Core by his brother, who attempted to hold the Greater Maldrood himself. After Palpatine was defeated on Onderon, dying his final death, and Byss was destroyed, Vice Admiral Gilad Pellaeon, another veteran of Palpatine's forces, joined Teradoc, who placed him in command of Crimson Command. In 12 ABY, former Emperor's Hand Roganda Ismaren attempted to use the superweapon ship Eye of Palpatine to gain influence with Teradoc and the other warlords, but failed when the Eye was destroyed. Simultaneously, Blitzer Harrsk attempted to gain control of the Atravis sector, leading to open conflict with Teradoc.

From his fortress, built into an asteroid in the ring system of a lavender-and-white gas giant, Teradoc sent a fleet of seventy-three Victories against Harrsk's stronghold. They destroyed Harrsk's flagship, the Shockwave, and crippled three other ships, but the attack provoked Harrsk's retaliation. Soon, a counter-force led by Admiral Natasi Daala arrived in Teradoc's system. Although the speed of their return caught Teradoc unprepared for attack, he had prepared traps in advance. As Daala and Harrsk's fleet moved into the rings, proximity mines planted by Teradoc in the larger asteroids detonated, destroying one of Harrsk's ships and crippling two others. As Harrsk's fleet approached Teradoc's asteroid fortress, Teradoc launched his fleet of Victories under Pellaeon's command. Teradoc observed the battle from within his bunker, while his fortress fired turbolaser salvos at the intruders. However, Daala's vessel Firestorm did not engage his fleet, instead firing its ion cannon at Harrsk's Whirlwind, temporarily immobilizing it. Daala then sent a communication denouncing Teradoc and Harrsk's war. She set her ship to self-destruct in fifteen minutes, threatening to kill Harrsk unless he ceased hostilities.

Aboard his flagship 13X, Pellaeon issued a ceasefire. Teradoc contacted him in a rage, ordering Pellaeon to destroy Harrsk while he was vulnerable. Pellaeon refused, wanting to negotiate with Daala, and Teradoc denounced him as a traitor. Pellaeon met with Daala anyway, and Harrsk eventually ordered a ceasefire. The two commanders left the system to discuss matters, trusting that Teradoc would not attack Harrsk in their absence. They eventually called a meeting of the warlords—Teradoc, Harrsk, and eleven other powerful rulers of the Deep Core—at Tsoss Beacon, a space station in the galactic center. Daala only allowed the warlords to approach the station, insisting they leave their fleets outside the system. Teradoc and the warlords reluctantly agreed after a two-day delay. They met in a conference room, with Teradoc arriving first.

Daala spoke of Imperial unity, which Teradoc dismissed as meaningless platitudes. Superior General Sander Delvardus attempted to leave, at which point Daala sealed the doors with a cyberlock that would not open for three hours, giving the warlords that time to choose a leader. After hours of fruitless argument, Harrsk attacked Teradoc, choking him. Pellaeon pulled Harrsk off Teradoc, but Daala had had enough. She berated the warlords for their disunity, and then, as she and Pellaeon put on breath masks, she flooded the room with nerve gas. Teradoc was the first to try to escape, but failed. One by one, the warlords succumbed to the gas. Teradoc was the last to die, which surprised Daala, given his obesity.

Personality and traits

Treuten Teradoc's life was defined by his intense rivalry with his brother Kosh. Although their relationship was strained, both brothers idolized the legendary Piethet Brighteyes, whom Treuten later emulated as the warlord of the Greater Maldrood. Their rivalry drove them to success in the Imperial Navy, and Treuten frequently flaunted his advantages over Kosh. Teradoc was an obese man, often red-faced and sweaty, with labored movements. His strategic approach involved building a fleet of smaller, more versatile ships, such as the Victory-class Star Destroyer. He preferred to command from a secure location within his fortress, using his ships as a disposable defense. Gilad Pellaeon, his subordinate, held Teradoc in contempt, considering him far inferior to Grand Admiral Thrawn. Nevertheless, Pellaeon learned the value of psychological warfare, including terror strikes, from Teradoc. Teradoc, a firm believer in loyalty to one's commanding officer, considered Pellaeon a traitor after his alliance with Natasi Daala. Teradoc was diligent and fiercely anti-Rebel. During Operation Shadow Hand, he rallied to the Emperor's call, but after Palpatine's final death, Teradoc rejected any Imperial government outside himself and the warlord kingdoms, dismissing notions of Imperial unity as empty words.

Behind the scenes

Teradoc first appeared in Kevin J. Anderson's Darksaber, but was briefly mentioned in Children of the Jedi, published immediately before it. While Children of the Jedi placed Teradoc in the Deep Core, The Bacta War placed his operations in the galactic Rim, and later works like Isard's Revenge and Starfighters of Adumar suggested his involvement near the Ciutric Hegemony and Zsinj's domain, also in the outer galaxy. The Essential Chronology maintained that Teradoc's only holdings were in the Deep Core, leaving the discrepancy unexplained. This was resolved in 2009's The Essential Atlas, which gave Teradoc a first name and added a backstory of his domain being in the Mid Rim, with his Deep Core period later in his career. A 2013 StarWars.com blog post, The Imperial Warlords: Despoilers of an Empire, provided extensive information on Teradoc's backstory, including his homeworld and rivalry with Kosh.

In 2020, Leland Chee confirmed that the Teradoc in X-Wing: The Bacta War was Kosh Teradoc, not Treuten.
