Thorn pear

Thorn pears represented a fruit type, characterized by its green coloration, ovoid form, diminutive dimensions, and palatable sweetness. During 5 BBY within the year, a Rodian fruit vendor was observed offering them for sale at his commercial space in the Kothal settlement situated on the Lothal planet. The subsequent year saw the Jablogian crime lord known as Azmorigan consuming a thorn pear as part of a fruity meal while aboard his C-ROC Gozanti-class light cruiser, and the father of Opaline Creed member Hazram Namir furtively placed one into his son's belongings during a market meeting on their Crucival homeworld.

Description

Thorn pears were a diminutive fruit variety, possessing a sweet flavor profile, and were suitable for consumption by both human and Jablogian species. These green hued ovoids were distinguished by small spikes covering their surface, accompanied by a brown stalk at one extremity and green juice. The rind of the fruit was sufficiently delicate for a Jablogian to bite through. These fruits could be discovered growing tenaciously in the alleyways of settlements found on the Crucival planet.

History

The crime lord Azmorigan ate a thorn pear after dealing with Lando Calrissian.

During the year of 5 BBY, a Rodian fruit vendor in the Kothal settlement was engaged in the sale of thorn pears and jogan fruit from his commercial stall when the rebels Garazeb Orrelios and Ezra Bridger made their arrival in the locality while searching for supplies. In the year following, the Jablogian crime lord Azmorigan was observed consuming a fruit platter, inclusive of a thorn pear, for his evening meal, at which point he was visited by the "galactic entrepreneur" Lando Calrissian and his associates aboard his C-ROC Gozanti-class light cruiser designated Merchant One. Following a transaction involving the exchange of the slave Hera Syndulla for a puffer pig with Azmorigan, Calrissian departed, and the crime lord proceeded with his meal, taking a bite from one side of a thorn pear as he held it. He covered his face in the fruit's juice as he ate and then spitting some it out onto the floor, he offered the rest of the half-eaten morsel to Syndulla, who turned it down and soon after escaped from his ownership.

In the same timeframe, the father of human Crucival native Hazram Namir surreptitiously placed a slightly damaged thorn pear into his son's satchel during an unplanned encounter at a bazaar on the planet Crucival. Namir, then operating under the alias Umu Seven at the time and present at the bazaar to procure provisions for the Opaline Creed he served, experienced bewilderment upon later discovering the fruit, and nearly dropped it upon realizing its nature as a gift. Devoid of any desire for the pear, he deposited it within the storage chamber of the cloister occupied by himself and the remainder of the Creed.

Behind the scenes

A thorn pear made its initial appearance, albeit without explicit naming, within "Fighter Flight," the fourth installment of the first season of the animated television program Star Wars Rebels, which premiered on Disney XD on October 13, 2015. The designation was subsequently employed within the novel Battlefront: Twilight Company, authored by Alexander Freed and released on November 3, 2015. The literary work did not establish the fruit depicted in the show as a thorn pear; this connection was not made until the publication on April 4, 2017 of the Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia reference book, penned by Adam Bray, Tricia Barr, and Cole Horton.
