A Different Approach

"A Different Approach" marks the fourth installment in the third season of the animated series Star Wars: The Bad Batch. This episode was initially broadcast on February 28, 2024.

Official Summary

Marooned within a hazardous environment, Omega and Crosshair are compelled to collaborate.

Detailed Synopsis

Emergency Landing

In the wake of their escape from Tantiss Base, Omega and Crosshair make their getaway aboard a commandeered Rho-class transport shuttle via hyperspace. Omega attempts to establish contact with the remaining members of the Bad Batch, but Crosshair insists that repairing the damaged engines of their vessel takes precedence. With the ship's stabilizers malfunctioning, Crosshair makes the decision to execute a landing and disengages from hyperspace. The shuttle plummets through the atmosphere of a planetary body designated as Lau, ultimately crash-landing in an open field adjacent to a mountain range.

Omega expresses her intention to retrieve the coordinates of Tantiss in order to facilitate the rescue of other clone prisoners, but Crosshair cautions that the Galactic Empire will be actively searching for them. Accompanied by the lurca hound named Batcher, they proceed towards a spaceport situated a few klicks to the east.

Hemlock's Captive

An imprisoned Nala Se talks to Hemlock.

Returning to Tantiss Base, Dr. Royce Hemlock informs the incarcerated Nala Se about the offworld escape of Omega and Crosshair. Nala Se affects surprise, but Hemlock reveals his awareness of her emotional bond with the young clone. He voices his suspicion regarding the fact that her previous samples from Omega yielded no results, whereas a sample analyzed by Emerie Karr indicated a positive M-count transfer. Nala Se alleges that the positive result was a false positive, an anomaly specific to Omega. Hemlock expresses his desire to retest Omega upon her recapture and warns Nala Se that her future remains uncertain.

On the Run

In the meantime, Omega, Crosshair, and Batcher navigate the somber streets of a nearby town in the vicinity of Lau spaceport. When Omega observes the presence of TK stormtroopers and inquires whether the Empire has been alerted to their presence, Crosshair clarifies that this is a customary presence. Omega wishes to transmit a message to Hunter, but Crosshair counters that the Empire is monitoring long-range communications. He suggests they will need to explore alternative methods.

Crosshair considers Batcher a burden, but Omega disagrees. At Omega's urging, they pilfer local attire to blend in with the populace. Crosshair also devises a scheme to appropriate shuttles from the spaceport. Upon arriving at the airport, they discover that the entrances are heavily guarded. Crosshair proposes eliminating the guards, but Omega opts to bribe the ticketing agent. The agent proposes selling them two tickets, along with complimentary space for Batcher, for a sum of 30,000 credits. Omega objects, but the ticketing agent asserts that the offer is non-negotiable.

While traversing the streets, Omega and Crosshair engage in a debate regarding strategies for leaving the planet. In front of a cantina, Omega suggests gambling to acquire credits. A local street urchin observes them from outside. Inside the establishment, Omega discusses her gambling plan with Crosshair, who deems it reckless.

Earning Credits

Omega engages in a game with a Trandoshan patron. Imperial Captain Mann enters, accompanied by two stormtroopers, and orders beverages from a bartender droid. The bartender droid informs Mann that the newcomer, Omega, is attracting business. By this point, Omega has defeated the Trandoshan in two rounds. Mann dismisses the Trandoshan and takes his seat. He challenges Omega to a game of balaans.

Concurrently, two Imperial stormtrooper pilots discover the clones' stolen shuttle and decide to investigate. Back at the cantina, Captain Mann is unnerved by Batcher and instructs Omega to remove her from the room. Omega signals for Crosshair to escort the hound outside. Mann notices that Omega and her father are strangers. Omega claims they are travelers. Mann praises Omega but informs her that he is on the verge of victory. However, Omega reveals that she possesses three Eastern Stars concealed up her sleeves. The bartender droid announces the game's conclusion and declares Omega the victor.

Initially, Mann gestures to his bodyguards but concedes defeat and allows Omega to claim the 20,000 credits she has won. Before Omega and Crosshair can depart, one of the stormtroopers informs Mann about a crashed shuttle. Mann then attempts to coerce Omega into forfeiting 10,000 credits under the pretense that gambling is prohibited on the planet. He threatens them with arrest if they refuse to comply. Omega reluctantly surrenders 10,000 credits to Mann, who departs with his stormtroopers. Omega informs Crosshair that they have 35,000 credits remaining, sufficient for two shuttle tickets and a small surplus.

Entering a Trap

Outside the cantina, the duo discovers that Batcher is missing. The street urchin offers to assist them in locating the hound in exchange for 10,000 credits. When Crosshair intimidates him, the boy relents and reduces the finder's fee to 5,000 credits. He informs them that the Imperial officer and his troopers seized the hound and are heading towards the cargo docks. The boy then departs.

Omega desires to proceed to the cargo docks, which lie in the opposite direction from the spaceport. Crosshair advocates abandoning Batcher, but Omega refuses to forsake the hound. She instructs Crosshair to take the credits and asserts that she can find her own way offworld. Crosshair contemplates his next course of action. At the cargo dock, workers load crates containing wild animals while stormtroopers provide security for the facility. Crosshair reluctantly agrees to assist Omega in infiltrating the cargo docks, which are enclosed by a tall metal fence.

The two locate Batcher's crate. Omega wishes to liberate the other animals, but Crosshair objects. The two are ambushed by Captain Mann, his stormtroopers, and the cargo docks guards. Captain Mann demands the return of his money as a fine and reveals that he has notified Dr. Hemlock of their presence. He discloses his knowledge of the crashed shuttle. When Captain Mann demands they surrender the credits, Omega feigns compliance but allows Crosshair to resolve the situation "his way."

Fighting Back and Escape

Following an exchange of gunfire, Omega and Crosshair seek refuge at the control console. Omega releases all of the caged animals from their enclosures, including nunas and Void striders. The stormtroopers and Mann are overwhelmed by the stampeding animals. Crosshair instructs Omega to retrieve Batcher and power up the ship while he deals with the Imperials. Omega and Batcher board the cargo ship and prepare for takeoff. Mann attempts to shoot Crosshair, but the clone trooper unlocks a rathtar crate. Mann is seized by the tentacled creature while Crosshair flees up the gangplank as stormtrooper reinforcements arrive. He also recovers the money pouch. Omega executes a successful takeoff, with a stormtrooper being propelled away by a blast from the cargo ship's engines.

After the fugitives depart Lau, Hemlock's clone commandos examine the wreckage of the shuttle. A Clone commando informs Dr. Hemlock that Omega and Crosshair have escaped offworld aboard a stolen cargo freighter. Hemlock orders that the ship be tracked and that their operatives be notified. Hemlock desires Omega to be found.

Reunion

While traveling through hyperspace, Crosshair advises Omega to abandon the ship because the Empire will be tracking them. Omega concurs and explains that she has arranged for Hunter and Wrecker to rendezvous with them at a remote location. Crosshair expresses doubt that his former comrades are still alive.

They travel to Ryloth's third moon where the Marauder awaits. Wrecker embraces Omega and lifts her into the air. Omega is overjoyed to see him. Wrecker states that they traversed the galaxy four times in search of her, but Hunter corrects him, stating that it was five times. Hunter is delighted to see Omega and descends the gangplank. He hugs Omega and assures her that they never ceased searching for her. When he inquires about her escape, she reveals that she received assistance. Crosshair exits the starship, creating tension with Hunter and Wrecker.
