Attendants

The Attendants were a group of voiceless alien navigators who belonged to an ancient insectoid species originating from the Unknown Regions. Various factions utilized them in that region. During the Age of the Empire, they participated in the Imperial–Grysk conflict, and they also served Supreme Leader Snoke of the First Order during the war between the First Order and the Resistance.

They possessed a distinctive mode of communication, employing imperceptible energy pulses in wavelengths beyond the range of human eyes.

History

The Grysk Hegemony employed Attendants as hyperspace navigators to traverse the perilous Unknown Regions. The Grysk "Jixtus" even kept two in his personal service. Haplif, an Agbui pawn of Jixtus, felt uneasy around them, as he was unfamiliar with their species and their origins. Their unsettling eye lenses, purple robes, and constant silence further disturbed him, leading him to believe they hailed from the most remote areas of the Unknown Regions. Despite his unease, Haplif and his fellow Agbui relied on an Attendant for navigation until Jixtus deployed the Pathfinder Qilori.

During the Imperial Era, the Attendants remained active, continuing their service to the Grysks. Under the Hegemony's direction, the Attendants trained other alien species in navigation, enabling Grysk starships to navigate the Unknown Regions. Following an attack on a Grysk warship by forces allied between the Galactic Empire and the Chiss Ascendancy, the allied forces rescued Un'hee, a Chiss who was Force-sensitive. Grand Admiral Mitth'raw'nuruodo of the Imperial Chiss and Admiral Ar'alani of the Ascendancy questioned Un'hee about the presence of other Chiss on the Grysk vessels they fought, but Un'hee denied this, stating that only species trained by the Attendants were present.

After the Galactic Empire's defeat at the Battle of Jakku, the remaining Imperial forces retreated to the Unknown Regions to evade the New Republic and plot their resurgence. While most Imperial officers would likely have died navigating the uncharted Regions, the ancient hyperspace routes established by the Attendants allowed them to survive and eventually form the First Order. The Attendants served Snoke, the First Order's Supreme Leader, who was a genetically engineered strandcast created by the resurrected Sith Lord Darth Sidious following his initial death at the Battle of Endor. Snoke unknowingly acted as Sidious' puppet, wielding power over the First Order. At least two Attendants were stationed aboard Snoke's flagship, the Supremacy, following the Evacuation of D'Qar in 34 ABY. There, they designed and managed the oculus viewing scope located in Snoke's throne room. Two Attendants were present in Snoke's throne room when General Armitage Hux entered after the battle above D'Qar. As Hux and Snoke spoke, the Attendants continued their enigmatic work at the oculus. Later, upon Kylo Ren's arrival, the Attendants slowly turned towards Snoke before refocusing on the oculus. As Ren knelt before his master, the Attendant nearest to the throne turned and fixed its gaze on Ren, while the other Attendant remained focused on the oculus. As Snoke moved from his throne to Ren, the first Attendant returned its attention to the oculus, while the second shifted its focus to the interaction between Snoke and Ren.

Both Attendants observed without reacting as the Supreme Leader unleashed Force lightning upon Ren when he attempted to strike Snoke in anger. They remained motionless as Snoke resumed his position on the throne. Later, Hux entered the throne room to discover it in shambles and ablaze with fire. Upon looking around, he noticed that the Attendants had already fled before finding Snoke dead in a heap before his throne.

Behind the scenes

The Attendants made their debut in the 2017 film Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, the second movie in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

They originated from concept art created by Ivan Manzella for J.J. Abrams' 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. They were also considered for Gareth Edwards' 2016 Star Wars Anthology film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, before Lucasfilm artists, on the advice of Michael Kaplan, finalized their design for The Last Jedi.
