Plot summary

Piloting their TIE/sf space superiority fighter through the vastness of space, Captain Phasma and First Order TIE fighter pilot TN-3465 are in pursuit of the fleeing Lieutenant Sol Rivas. Phasma directs TN-3465 to get closer to Rivas' TIE fighter so she can eliminate him, only to find out that the droid BB-K8 hadn't finished the repairs on the laser cannon. Out of frustration, Phamsa kicks BB-K8, then tells TN-3465 to maintain a safe distance from Rivas' fighter.

Phasma and TN-3465 tail Rivas to Luprora, a planet in the Unknown Regions that the First Order had deemed unsuitable due to its environmental conditions. After landing their TIE fighter on this rocky, ocean-dominated world, they begin tracking Rivas' TIE/fo space superiority fighter eastward. While traversing the planet, Phasma orders TN-3465 to carry BB-K8, as the spherical droid is unable to navigate the rough, mountainous landscape. Phasma finds the air breathable but notes that the planet stirs up unpleasant memories of her former homeworld.

They approach Rivas' fighter, only to discover that he has already left. After deactivating the communications, navigation, and distress beacon, Phasma figures out that he simply ran out of fuel. Phasma also finds evidence indicating that Rivas was attacked by some sort of alien creature. The two then seek shelter in an abandoned structure. Using the targeting scope on her blaster rifle, Phasma spots a village nearby.

To avoid causing alarm among the locals, they both change into civilian clothing. Phasma is particularly careful to conceal her face by putting on a helmet with a red visor. TN-3465 also removes her uniform, revealing herself to be a young human woman sporting a black bob haircut. To keep their First Order affiliations secret, Captain Phasma instructs TN-3465 to use the name Pilot, while Phasma will go by Captain. While crossing a lake, Phasma is ambushed by a massive tentacled creature called the Tsw'ells, which ensnares her in its tentacles. After a hard-fought struggle, Phasma manages to break free and kill the creature with a large knife.

After emerging on the other side of the lake, Phasma and TN-3465 come across a humanoid race with pale, greenish skin known as the Lupr'or. Phasma realizes that the Lupr'or speak a dialect of Lupre'en. A dark-haired woman named Dar'en informs the visitors that the Lupr'or leader Jair'i wishes to meet Phasma because she killed a Tsw'ell, a powerful and destructive beast. Jai'ri recounts the history of his people to the visitors, with Phasma translating for TN-3465.

Phasma and TN-3465 learn that the Lupr'or fled their original planet long ago. Viewing technology as a corrupting influence that ruined their former home, they destroyed their starships and embraced a basic lifestyle centered on fishing and farming. However, Luprora's environment has been deteriorating, with rising sea levels and unpredictable waves wiping out much of the land they had settled and farmed. The Lupr'or have also been under attack from Tsw'ells and a species known as the R'ora. The remaining Lupr'or have retreated to the safety of their remaining city.

Phasma learns from Jai'ri that the R'ora captured Rivas. While TN-3465 believes that this marks the end for the fugitive, Phasma insists that Rivas is her responsibility and cannot be left unresolved. Ja'iri sends Dar'en to accompany the offworlders to the R'ora stronghold in an attempt to demonstrate the futility of "rescuing" R'ora.
