Detailed Plot Summary

Descending into Shadow

Darth Vader employs a Force choke on an Imperial Colonel, halting only when Emperor Palpatine commands him to cease. The Emperor expresses gratitude to the Colonel for the provided report and conveys his expectation for improved performance from the Colonel's division in the coming weeks. Post the Colonel's departure, the Emperor reveals to Vader that they are encompassed by inferior beings who warrant only hatred and disdain. He advises Vader that such sentiments unlock access to the power inherent in the Dark side of the Force. He elaborates that death, fury, and anguish serve as tools for the Sith, yet cautions Vader against allowing these emotions to overwhelm him. He concludes by stating his lack of desire to preside over a galaxy populated solely by the deceased.

Operating Behind Enemy Lines

Concurrently, Jedi Master Jocasta Nu traverses the devastated remains of the former Jedi Temple, scarred by the events of the Great Jedi Purge. Her astromech droid, identified as Beetoo, alerts her to the discovery of their hangar by Coruscant underworld police. Master Nu, having infiltrated the Temple with minimal security, finds herself compelled to alter her strategy. The droid responds with beeps, indicating comprehension of her directives.

An officer from the underworld police voices his discontent, deeming the inspection a waste of resources. His partner counters, stating that the sensor grid detected an unusual energy signature at the hangar. The initial officer dismisses this, attributing it to fluctuations in the city's power grid and suggesting the dispatch of a repair droid or technician instead. Amidst the officers' discussion regarding the insurgent threat to Coruscant, Beetoo connects to the Delta-7B Aethersprite-class light interceptor's engine. Just as the police officers gain access to the hangar, Beetoo triggers the ship's detonation, resulting in an explosion seemingly eradicating all traces of Master Nu's presence.

Within the Jedi Archives, the Grand Inquisitor peruses the collection of tomes. Master Nu observes him but opts to prioritize her mission over confronting the intruder. Returning to the site of the hangar explosion, a Coruscant underworld police officer informs an Imperial Security Bureau (ISB) Major that the majority of the wreckage has been recovered, and preliminary sensor data indicates a substantial explosion involving rhydonium. He hypothesizes that the rhydonium was incorporated into the ship's fuel system. Another officer uncovers a decal bearing the emblem of the Jedi Order.

While the Coruscant police officer believes that the Jedi presence has been eliminated, the ISB Major clarifies that new directives mandate the reporting of any Jedi-related activity to Darth Vader, the Emperor's newly appointed enforcer. As Lord Vader meditates within a tempestuous black sea, surrounded by fluttering white butterflies, he is interrupted by a servant who conveys the ISB's report of a potential Jedi-related incident within the city.

Master Nu's Objective

Returning to the Temple, Master Nu employs the Force to activate a concealed door behind a bookcase. She gains entry to a clandestine vault housing various relics, overseen by the droid Cator, who has maintained vigilance during her absence. At the ISB laboratory, the Major briefs Vader on the bombing incident, characterizing it as a botched attempt to target the affluent sector of the city. He suggests that the Jedi insignia served as a form of rabble-rousing graffiti.

Vader refutes the Major's assessment. The Major attempts to reassert his authority, citing his investigative experience and reminding Vader of his presence as a courtesy. Lord Vader utilizes the Force to reconstruct the remnants of the Jedi starfighter and Beetoo. This display of Force both awes and terrifies the Major. Lord Vader informs the Major of a Jedi at large on Coruscant and instructs him to direct his teams to search every level, excluding the former Jedi Temple. When the Major proposes that the Jedi fugitive might seek refuge at the Temple, Lord Vader declares his intention to personally address the threat.

Back at the Temple Archives, Master Nu fulfills her objective of acquiring the Order's database containing information on every known Force-sensitive child within the galaxy, stored on a datacard. She informs Cator of the Sith's takeover of the galaxy and anticipates that it will require generations for the Jedi to overthrow them. Nevertheless, she pledges the Jedi's eventual return. Master Nu intends to utilize the database to rebuild the Jedi Order. She expresses gratitude to Cator for his service and promises a future reunion.

As she navigates the corridors of the Archives, she struggles to resist confronting the Grand Inquisitor. However, she is consumed by rage upon witnessing him casually browsing through her books. Overwhelmed by fury, she descends from a balcony and confronts him, brandishing her lightsaber.
