Lasers designed for field use were a type of laser capable of neutralizing plasma fire. Back in 40 BBY, the Jedi Master known as Qui-Gon Jinn, along with his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, employed these lasers to aid a soulcraft that had come under attack from a plasma bomb. This incident occurred above the planet Pijal, located in the Inner Rim. Although they started to cut through the plasma fire, a starship, which they later identified as the Meryx, discharged an antiplasma charge, extinguishing the flames.
During the Republic Era, a Consular-class cruiser utilized by the Galactic Republic carried field lasers. In 40 BBY, this cruiser was tasked with transporting Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, to the planet Pijal in the Inner Rim to mediate the signing of the forthcoming Governance Treaty initiative.

As the cruiser entered the Pijal system and neared Pijal, they came across a Pijali soulcraft vessel in distress. It had been attacked with a plasma bomb by Pijali blackguard soldiers. These soldiers were secretly acting under the orders of Princess Fanry of Pijal, who aimed to disrupt the treaty's signing before her coronation. Jinn instructed the ship's navigator to halt so they could offer assistance. He and his Padawan donned space-suits and retrieved the field lasers from the cruiser. Once they were floating in space, the Jedi duo used their field lasers to cut through the sickly green haze of glowing plasma fire, causing small blobs of it to float away as the soulcraft initiated an emergency descent. While Jinn was working, he noticed another instance of plasma fire on the opposite side of the soulcraft and internally lamented the limited effectiveness of his field laser against it.
However, before the Jedi Master could move toward the second fire with his field laser, a starship quickly approached and launched an antiplasma charge, extinguishing the flames. Subsequently, the struggling soulcraft was safely brought aboard the Czerka Corporation cruiser Leverage and transported to Pijal. At the Pijali palace, the Jedi were informed that the Opposition, a performance troupe known for protesting the Governance Treaty, were seemingly responsible for the attack. In reality, the troupe was being used as a scapegoat for the blackguards' attacks throughout the Pijal system. Jinn and Kenobi later discovered that the starship that had deployed the antiplasma charge, ending their need for the field lasers, was the Meryx, operated by jewel thieves Rahara Wick and Pax Maripher.
The novel Master & Apprentice, penned by Claudia Gray and released in 2019, featured field lasers.
