Description

Overview

A flight, alternatively known as a flight element, constituted a small-scale starfighter military formation. These units typically formed components of a larger starfighter squadron or operated independently.

During the era of the Clone Wars, the Galactic Republic strategically deployed flights, integrating them into the Republic Starfighter Corps. A flight group encompassed multiple flights, sometimes consisting of as few as two spacecraft. The Galactic Empire also utilized flights, with four flights typically forming a squadron. The 204th Imperial Fighter Wing, along with its six squadrons, was structured around flights. Additionally, flights were stationed on Imperial planets, conducting patrol operations. Within the Empire, flights typically comprised four starfighters and served as sentries.

The Alliance to Restore the Republic incorporated flights into its Starfighter Corps. Alliance squadrons were composed of four numbered flights, though flights also functioned independently. Flights formed an integral part of the starfighter unit structure within the New Republic, constituting the forces of a squadron within a fighter wing. In the New Republic's military structure, a flight consisted of five bombers. The First Order also utilized flights within their military structure, and a flight could be composed of five TIE/fo space superiority fighters.

Following the Battle of Hoth, Red Squadron and its constituent flights took part in an attack on an asteroid mining station that was operated by pirates.

The Imperial Theta Squadron, which had an unusually large complement of twenty-four fighters, was organized into several flights, with each flight comprising six fighters. This flight, along with the rest of Theta Squadron, was launched from the ISD Avenger during its pursuit of the Millennium Falcon after the Battle of Hoth.

During the New Republic Era

During the First Order-Resistance War, the First Order was involved in the Battle of Ikkrukk, which was the First Order's invasion of Ikkrukk. Upon encountering Resistance starfighter forces, the heavy cruiser Fortitude deployed its full complement of TIE fighters, including an entire TIE flight.
