Jod Na Nawood

A Force-attuned human male, known by many names, including Crimson Jack, Dash Zentin, Professor Umiam Gorelox, Emissary, Jodwick Zank, and the infamous "Mad" Captain Silvo, was Jod Na Nawood. During the New Republic Era, Na Nawood commanded his own pirate crew as their captain, until his lieutenant Brutus overthrew him and threw him in jail around 9 ABY. While confined in the brig on Borgo Prime, he came across a group of four children: Wim, KB, Neel, and Fern. He made an agreement with them, promising to assist them in returning to their home planet of At Attin in exchange for compensation. In reality, Na Nawood was after the fabled treasure horde believed to be hidden on At Attin. Aboard the ancient pirate vessel, the Onyx Cinder, the group collaborated with the droid SM-33.

Biography

Early life and career

Prior to the New Republic Era, Jod Na Nawood, a Force-sensitive human male, was born. He claimed he grew up on a planet that tasted like "ashy dust".

During his younger years, Jod lived in a subterranean dwelling where he encountered a Jedi. She imparted basic knowledge of the Force to him before she was hunted and killed. Witnessing his master's tragic demise instilled in Na Nawood a cynical perspective, leading him to believe that the galaxy was predominantly dark with only rare glimmers of hope.

Na Nawood pursued a career as a pirate and rogue, adopting various identities and aliases, including Crimson Jack, the name by which the astronomer Kh'ymm, whom he claimed was a friend, knew him. At some point, he encountered the bounty hunter Pokkit and abandoned her in a pit filled with leeches. Pokkit attempted to locate him, but no one she questioned had ever heard of anyone named "Dash Zentin." Throughout his career, he relied on his quick wit, charm, and conversational prowess to navigate treacherous situations. He was viewed as an enigmatic figure, whose history and motivations were often shrouded in mystery.

New Republic Era

Cargo raid

Silvo enters the intercepted bulk freighter.

During the New Republic Era, Na Nawood, under the alias "Silvo," served as the captain of a pirate crew, commanding a frigate. Around 9 ABY, he sensed a growing unease among his crew regarding his leadership, an uncertainty he aimed to dispel with a swift infusion of money. To achieve this, the pirates launched an attack on a merchant freighter, hoping to seize its supposedly valuable shipment of credits.

After the assault team subdued the freighter's crew, Silvo, accompanied by Gunter and Chaelt, boarded the starship and headed for the vault. Silvo unsuccessfully tried to coerce the ship's captain into opening the door, even resorting to choking him. When the captain insisted that there was no valuable cargo on board, Silvo had him ejected through the airlock. As the pirates breached the vault door, Silvo promised his crew a substantial reward, but the entire shipment turned out to be a single coin. Fueled by Brutus's subsequent speech, the crew revolted against Silvo, who desperately defended himself and attempted to explain the situation. This act of defiance ultimately established Brutus as the crew's new captain.

Pirate prisoner

Jod Na Nawood was imprisoned in the brig on the asteroid of Borgo Prime.

Silvo was incarcerated in the brig of his former crew's base on the asteroid Borgo Prime, a shadowport situated in the Outer Rim. Sometime later, a group of stranded children from At Attin, the legendary planet of endless treasure, arrived on the asteroid and were placed in the same cell as the rogue. As Wim, Neel, Fern, and KB discussed their predicament and future plans, Na Nawood eavesdropped, revealing himself during an argument between Wim and Fern. He offered to assist the group in returning to the starship they had discovered on At Attin and help them return to their home world, provided that he could escape with them. When Fern questioned how they would obtain the key to their cell, Na Nawood stepped forward, declaring that the distance between them and the key was merely an illusion, before using the Force to telekinetically retrieve it. Wim inquired if Na Nawood was a Jedi, to which he responded by silencing him and asking if he could keep a secret.

Na Nawood and the children used the key to unlock the cell, but they noticed pirate guards nearby. To create a diversion, Na Nawood used the Force to topple an object, allowing them to escape unnoticed. Upon reaching the Onyx Cinder, the children informed Na Nawood that SM-33 was still held captive by the pirates. Na Nawood suggested abandoning him, dismissing him as just a droid, but Fern insisted on rescuing him, forcing Na Nawood to reluctantly agree.

As Silvo traversed the port towards the pirate brig, he overheard Captain Brutus shouting about Captain Silvo's escape. Hearing this, Silvo concealed his face with his hood. Upon reaching the brig, he activated a series of droids, including a B1 Battle Droid who inquired about the outcome of the Clone Wars, and another droid with the mission of rescuing a prince. After locating SM-33, Silvo swiftly loaded him onto a cart. During this process, an Ishi Tib pirate named Benjar Pranic recognized him. He told Silvo that he was a better captain than Brutus and stalled him before reporting him to Captain Brutus. Upon returning to the ship, they were pursued by pirates. As they prepared to jump into hyperspace, they realized that Na Nawood and the children were still tethered to the port by a sturdy rope. Despite their attempts to break free, they remained stuck. Na Nawood acknowledged the rope's strength. He then prepared to initiate the hyperspace jump with the rope still attached, prompting KB to warn of the extreme danger. They proceeded anyway, and Na Nawood informed the children that they would be meeting an old acquaintance of his.

Later, while the children repaired SM-33, Na Nawood prepared a bowl of porridge in front of them and then left, prompting the children to rush for the food. As Na Nawood explored the ship, he rummaged through the clothes in the room. After trying on a boot, he retrieved a knife from the skeletal remains of a crew member. SM-33 approached from behind, and Na Nawood attempted to inquire if the children were truly from At Attin, but SM-33 refused to answer.

After the children had fallen asleep, Na Nawood noticed that KB was still awake. She voiced her suspicions that he was not a Jedi and presented her calculations. Na Nawood countered that not everything in the galaxy could be quantified and advised her to trust her instincts. He then turned off the lights and told her to get some sleep.

Na Nawood piloted the Onyx Cinder into a star system dominated by a massive gas giant and its rocky moon. He navigated the ship across the moon's rugged terrain, passing a telescope array and an abandoned landing pad before ascending above a desolate, cratered landscape. The children disembarked from the starship, stepping onto the cold, barren surface of the moon. After maneuvering through a small gathering of people, Jod led the four children in single file along a narrow ridge. As they walked, he cautioned them about an old associate they were about to meet, admitting that while he knew her, he did not trust her, fearing she might betray them.

Upon the Onyx Cinder's arrival at At Attin, Jod feigned being a republic emissary. As such, he was granted safe passage to the planet's surface.

Battle of At Attin

Na Nawood's ruse of being a Republic Emissary crumbled when he also claimed to be a Jedi, as the last transmission At Attin had received from the Republic claimed that the Jedi were traitors. Na Nawood deactivated the Supervisor and through manipulation and threats achieved passage of his crew through the Barrier. However, due to the actions of the Skeleton Crew and their parents (particularly Fara and Wendle) the New Republic was alerted to the goings-on and the Barrier was destroyed. In the course of the scuffle, Na Nawood lost his lightsaber to Wim and his ship was destroyed by New Republic X-Wings and B-Wings.

Personality and traits

Na Nawood, embodying the traits of many pirates, exhibited a pronounced avarice, driving him to seek out the treasure planet At Attin and ultimately betray the Skeleton Crew. He displayed no moral reservations about harming innocent individuals, as evidenced by his threats to the Skeleton Crew, warning them of dire consequences if they revealed his intentions to anyone on At Attin. He also callously ordered the merchant captain to be ejected into space. Despite his cruel and ruthless nature, he regarded his crew as family, accepting an apology from Benjar Pranic before being threatened with betrayal. He was also generous enough to share the treasure of At Attin with his former crewmates. His upbringing in poverty and the traumatic witnessing of his Jedi Master's death instilled in him a cynical worldview, perceiving the galaxy as a harsh and unforgiving realm where glimmers of hope were scarce and often required reprehensible acts to attain and preserve.

Powers and abilities

As an individual Force-sensitive, Na Nawood possessed the capability to manipulate the Force. He harnessed his abilities to levitate a key in the air and retrieve his weapons telekinetically. He also demonstrated knowledge of Force push and Force Pull, although his limited training constrained his ability to fully utilize these powers. Furthermore, Na Nawood was adept at employing charm, quick thinking, and persuasive conversation as strategies to extricate himself from perilous situations. He also possessed familiarity with certain tenets of the Jedi Order, allowing him to impart fragments of Jedi philosophy to outsiders, thereby convincing them of his Jedi affiliation and trustworthiness.

Equipment

In his guise as Silvo, Na Nawood donned a helmet and a face-concealing mask adorned with angular patterns. His attire consisted of layered garments, including a long, knee-length coat, complemented by a bandolier loaded with ammunition slung across his chest. During his escape, he carried a scoped blaster pistol and a large dagger-knife scavenged from a corpse aboard the Onyx Cinder. Na Nawood later acquired a lightsaber from Tak Rennod's lair for his own use. Following Brutus's demise, Na Nawood reclaimed his original attire, including his old helmet, coat, bandolier, and Brutus' blaster musket in a reverse-draw holster.

Behind the scenes

Jod Na Nawood made his debut in the Disney+ television series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, portrayed by Jude Law. His identity was first revealed in a listing by German retailer Müller, which showcased the LEGO Star Wars: Skeleton Crew set 75374 The Onyx Cinder.

As a long-time admirer of the franchise since the release of the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, particularly of Harrison Ford's portrayal of Han Solo, Law requested that his character be permitted to wear a stripe down the side of his pants, a suggestion that was approved.
