Klik-Klak

Living on Geonosis two years before the Battle of Yavin was a male Geonosian named Klik-Klak. As the last of his kind, this Geonosian diligently guarded a Queen egg, hoping to revive his species after the Galactic Empire decimated the Geonosians, nearly driving them to near-extinction following the initial construction phase of the Death Star in the planet's orbit.

Klik-Klak resided deep within an ancient Geonosian temple, where he managed to construct his own droid army using resources abandoned by the Confederacy of Independent Systems from the era of the Clone Wars. These droids enabled him to ambush anyone venturing into his lair. In 2 BBY, Klik-Klak ambushed Saw Gerrera along with a squad of his Partisans, dispatched by Rebel Command to investigate the Geonosian's disappearance. Mistaking them for enemies, he killed all except Saw, who barely escaped.

Later, Klik-Klak encountered members of the rebel group known as Spectres, who were also searching for Saw. Following a short fight and chase, the rebels and Saw successfully captured him. Despite their initial conflict, the rebel Ezra Bridger convinced his companions and Saw that Klik-Klak posed no real threat. Klik-Klak attempted to convey the existence of the Death Star to the Rebels, but could only communicate by drawing a circle within a circle. While exploring a subterranean air shaft, the rebels and Saw uncovered evidence of the Empire's use of chemical weapons to exterminate the Geonosians. After allowing Klik-Klak to escape underground with the Queen egg, the rebels managed to evade an attack by an Arquitens-class command cruiser and escaped offworld, carrying the news of the Imperial genocide against the Geonosians.

Biography

Background

Klik-Klak was the only one left after the Imperial sterilization of Geonosis. He became the protector of a Geonosian queen's egg, which was kept secure in an underground nest near an air shaft. Klik-Klak also succeeded in rebuilding and reprogramming numerous B1-series battle droids and droidekas, which he employed to safeguard his territory. Several droidekas were stationed to protect a military-grade Deflector shield generator located on the surface. In addition, Klik-Klak maintained a transmitter within his nest.

Conflict with the rebels

In 2 BBY, Klik-Klak found himself in opposition to the rebel Saw Gerrera and his team of Partisans. Saw had been dispatched by Rebel Command to look into the apparent disappearance of the Geonosian population. Assuming Saw and his team were hostile, Klik-Klak launched an attack, resulting in the deaths of Saw's comrades. Saw survived, managing to stay hidden in the underground labyrinth until Captain Rex and members of the Spectres rebel cell arrived to locate him and continue the mission. Aided by Saw, the Spectres Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, Chopper, and Rex were able to destroy a group of battle droids and droidekas that Klik-Klak had sent to ambush them.

While investigating the central air shaft, the droid Chopper discovered Klik-Klak hiding on the opposite side. Believing that Klik-Klak possessed information about what the Empire was constructing on Geonosis, the rebels and Saw pursued him through the mine. He also activated the droidekas on the surface using a remote controller. These droidekas then attacked the Spectres Sabine Wren and Garazeb Orrelios, who were in the process of extracting the deflector core from the shield generator. Chopper and Ezra attempted to trap him, but Klik-Klak successfully fought off his pursuers. After a prolonged struggle, Klik-Klak was cornered by Saw, Kanan, and Rex. Saw then shot his remote controller and demanded to know what the Empire was building on Geonosis.

Captive of the rebels

Klik-Klak was treated harshly by Saw

Saw's interrogation of Klik-Klak was brutal, fueled by Klik-Klak's involvement in the deaths of his comrades. His heavy-handed tactics worried Ezra and the other rebels. Ezra managed to earn Klik-Klak's trust by assuring him that they meant no harm. He also successfully convinced Klik-Klak to share his name. Unable to properly pronounce Klik-Klak's name, Ezra gave him the nickname Klik-Klak. When Ezra inquired about the Empire's activities on Geonosis, Klik-Klak drew two circles on the ground, alluding to the Empire's planned space station, the Death Star. However, the group misinterpreted this as the rings of Geonosis and other objects. After Chopper detected an energy signature, Saw forced Klik-Klak to lead them to it, restraining him with handcuffs due to distrust.

Klik-Klak reluctantly guided the rebels to his nest. He protested when Saw started searching his place for information regarding the Empire's operations. Saw's aggressive methods disturbed Ezra, Kanan, and Rex. Prompted by Ezra, Klik-Klak revealed that he was protecting a Geonosian queen egg. Following some discussion, the rebels and Saw reached an agreement, allowing Saw to take Klik-Klak off-world for interrogation, with the condition that he would be safely returned to Geonosis afterward. After re-establishing contact with Hera, the rebels and Klik-Klak met with the ship Ghost in the central air shaft. The Ghost's arrival coincided with the arrival of an Imperial light cruiser under the command of Captain Brunson.

Once aboard the Ghost, Saw violated his agreement with the Spectres and Rex, attempting to depart with Klik-Klak on the Phantom II. Saw even used an electro-shocker on Klik-Klak to force his cooperation. Saw's actions led to a dispute with the Spectres and Rex. When Saw threatened to destroy the Geonosian queen egg to get information from Klik-Klak, Ezra warned him that such behavior would make him no better than the Empire. The rebels and Saw later set aside their differences to repel Brunson's boarding party of Jumptroopers. Chased by the Imperial light cruiser, the rebels fled on the Ghost into the depths of Geonosis.

Change of heart

After reaching the depths of the air shaft, Klik-Klak and the rebels disembarked. They soon discovered several poison canisters that the Empire had used to exterminate many Geonosians. Having learned that the Empire had perpetrated genocide against the Geonosians to conceal a secret project, Saw freed Klik-Klak and the egg. Despite his past animosity towards the Geonosians, Saw believed that they deserved the chance to rebuild, just like everyone else. Klik-Klak took the egg into the deepest depths of Geonosis, while the rebels left Geonosis with visual evidence of the Imperial poison canisters.

Legacy

The egg that Klik-Klak safeguarded eventually hatched, producing a Geonosian queen who named herself Karina by 0 ABY. After losing her womb, she attached herself to a portable droid factory and began using it as a mechanical womb to create B1 battle droids, which she regarded as her Geonosian children. In 0 ABY, the Sith Lord Darth Vader visited Geonosis and forcibly seized the droid factory from her.

Personality and traits

Klik-Klak, a male Geonosian, was well-adapted to the dark conditions of Geonosis' underground labyrinths. He possessed great stamina, able to run for long distances, and was a skilled fighter, easily defeating Ezra Bridger in hand-to-hand combat. As a Geonosian, Klik-Klak spoke only Geonosian and had to resort to drawing symbols on the ground to communicate with off-worlders who spoke Galactic Basic Standard. Following the sterilization of Geonosis, Klik-Klak became the caretaker of a Geonosian queen egg, believed to be one of the last remaining eggs on the planet. Due to his people's recent history, Klik-Klak was wary of armed strangers, particularly those carrying weapons. While initially hostile towards the Spectres, he softened after Ezra befriended him and defended him from Saw Gerrera's harsh interrogation tactics.

Behind the scenes

Klik-Klak, voiced by Matthew Wood, made his debut in "Ghosts of Geonosis," the twelfth and thirteenth episodes of the third season of Star Wars Rebels, which were broadcast on January 7, 2017. Klik-Klak's character was developed to demonstrate that a sympathetic Geonosian was possible. The production team drew inspiration from the 2009 film District 9.
