Liberation of enslavement camps

A number of Trade Federation enslavement facilities were freed during the Naboo Invasion taking place in 32 BBY. After seizing the planet's capital city of Theed, the Trade Federation Droid Army, in conjunction with Neimoidian overseers, rapidly established a series of these enslavement sites to detain Naboo civilians. Along the Andrevea River, Pilots belonging to the Royal Naboo Security Forces managed to liberate several of these locations. Lieutenant Gavyn Sykes, operating under the command of Captain Kael, utilized a captured gunboat to penetrate the camps and disable the power generators, thus deactivating the facilities and releasing the prisoners. This occurred after disrupting and then attacking a Trade Federation base.

Borvo the Hutt, who headed up a criminal organization and was an associate of the Security Force group led by Sykes and Captain Kael, furnished transports to facilitate the civilians' escape. However, Sykes was compelled to personally guide a surplus of civilians to safety before reuniting with Kael. Upon Sykes' convoy arriving at the town of Ferentina, Federation forces blockaded the river and launched an assault on Ferentina, prompting the civilians to switch to Flash speeders. Simultaneously, Sykes took to the air in an N-X cruiser and escorted the convoy past the blockade, leading them to the designated meeting location near the Devils tower landmark.

Prelude

In 32 BBY, the Trade Federation Droid Army invaded the planet of Naboo and subsequently established a series of enslavement camps. These camps were designed to hold captured Naboo prisoners under the supervision of Neimoidian enslavement supervisors. As the invasion unfolded, the Royal Naboo Security Forces delivered multiple blows against the invading forces following the fall of Naboo's capital, Theed. After disrupting and attacking a single Trade Federation base, a resistance group under the leadership of Captain Kael commandeered a Trade Federation gunboat. Their goal was to infiltrate several of the enslavement camps and set free the imprisoned Naboo civilians.

The battle

Infiltration

Lieutenant Gavyn Sykes, navigating the stolen gunboat along the Andrevea River, infiltrated the enslavement camps during the night. He communicated with his flight commander, Captain Kael, who instructed Sykes to continue upstream and scout for Federation forces. The droid forces had erected a barrier of proximity mines across the river, but Sykes successfully cleared a path. However, several droid starfighters passed overhead, causing Sykes to panic. His flight commander managed to reassure him, cautioning him against compromising the mission. Upon reaching a large bay area where some of the camps were situated, Kael ordered him to liberate the prisoners. Given that Sykes was piloting a Trade Federation gunboat, the forces stationed there mistook him for an ally. Two minelayers attempted to block the entrance with additional proximity mines, but Sykes destroyed them, revealing his true allegiance. Laser turrets opened fire on the gunboat, but Sykes destroyed the power generators, deactivating the lasers and enabling the civilians to escape. This also prevented the initial set of camps from alerting the other camps. Kael contacted Sykes, informing him that their smuggler ally, Borvo the Hutt, was dispatching transports from his smuggling syndicate to evacuate the civilians from the region.

Vedd Deviss attacking the power generator

As Sykes proceeded further down the river, he observed another gunboat speeding away to warn the remaining camps. Sykes pursued and destroyed it, concealing his true identity from the remaining Federation forces. He encountered and destroyed more mines en route to the central concourse, successfully navigating through the concourse gates until he approached the anti-air defenses. The defensive posts were alerted to his presence when Sykes commenced firing upon them. While battling through the turrets, additional gunboats were launched from the camp's hangar. He also needed to eliminate the anti-air turrets so that his wingmate, Vedd Deviss, could arrive and destroy the generators. After Sykes destroyed the turrets using his gunboat's weaponry, Deviss executed a low-altitude strafing run in his N-1 starfighter to disable the generators. Although the prisoners had been freed, the resistance lacked sufficient transports to evacuate them all. Consequently, the civilians located several houseboats for transportation, and Sykes escorted them further up the river to a rendezvous point with Kael and the rest of the group.

Sanctuary

As dawn approached, Sykes and the civilians neared the river's end near the town of Ferentina, which was under attack by Trade Federation droid bombers. A bomber destroyed a bridge spanning the river, trapping the convoy behind it. Subsequently, the Armored Assault Tanks stationed along the riverbanks opened fire on the transports. Recognizing the need for land-based travel, Sykes located a water-based security hangar and took to the skies in an N-X Police Cruiser. He destroyed the tanks and then created a tunnel through which additional tanks had been moving to join the battle. As the civilians boarded Flash speeders, Sykes provided aerial support over the town, rescuing two additional crewed Flash speeders that were trapped behind a collapsed tower. Sykes then advanced into the canyon ahead of the speeders, destroyed a blockade consisting of five tanks, and defended the convoy from numerous droid starfighters, successfully escorting the convoy northward to a concealed location in a mountain pass near Devils tower, an ancient landmark.

Sykes also discovered rapid-fire laser technology concealed behind Devils tower, which he acquired by flying around the landmark.

The rendezvous point

Aftermath

While the civilians awaited transport, Sykes caused the rock bed behind them to collapse. He then landed and commandeered one of the speeders he had escorted. Lutin Hollis, another member of Sykes' resistance group, contacted him and reported that Kael had been shot down and was missing. Despite Sykes' belief that the captain was unharmed, he promptly joined the search for Kael. The incident was later mentioned in a report presented to the Sith Lord Darth Maul by the invasion's leader, Viceroy Nute Gunray.

Behind the scenes

The liberation of the enslavement camps is depicted in two consecutive missions—numbers eight and nine—featured in the 2000 video game Star Wars: Episode I: Battle for Naboo. In the ninth mission, an upgrade can be found floating behind Devils tower, and acquiring it fulfills the bonus objective. The liberation was referenced in Sykes' entry in 2008's The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, as well as in the 2011 magazine Star Wars: The Official Starships & Vehicles Collection 62. The event also appeared in the 2012 short story "End Game," authored by James Luceno. Page three of artist James Zhang's storyboards for mission eight was included in the 2008 behind-the-scenes book Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts.
