Maerdocian sector

The Maerdocian sector, a sector in the Mid Rim, was situated within the galactic region known as the Slice, to the west of Hutt Space. The Gamor Run hyperlane crossed its Rimward edge, and the Expansion Region terminated at the sector's coreward border.

Due to its proximity to Hutt Space, the Galactic Republic and the Hutts fought over the territory. The Republic expanded to include the sector around 5000 BBY, but the Hutts eventually annexed portions of it in the years leading up to the Invasion of Naboo. The Imperial Period saw them lose it.

Following the rise of the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY, the Chroma Zed system was used for slave labor. In 4 ABY, Nagai and Tof forces moved through the sector toward Zeltros in the Inner Rim. That same year, the New Republic advanced from Bothawui toward Kashyyyk in a similar manner. The Maerdocian sector then enjoyed a period of peace until the Yuuzhan Vong War, when the Deneba system fell to the extra-galactic invaders during the first year of the conflict. By 137 ABY, the sector was under the control of Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire.

Description

The Maerdocian sector was situated in the Mid Rim, specifically within the Slice, a region encompassing the majority of space between the Rimma Trade Route and the Corellian Run. The Expansion Region formed its coreward boundary, and it was bordered by the Eclorar, Daalang, Aida, Noolian, and Fei Hu sectors in a clockwise direction.

The Gamor Run, a hyperlane connecting the Corellian Run and Daalang, ran through the sector near its rimward side, with at least four systems located along it. Among these, the polluted, swampy planet Shador in the Shador system housed a significant shadowport. Other planets within the sector included Chokan, Chroma Zed and Deneba.

History

The Great Manifest Period began in 20,000 BBY. During this time and the subsequent Indecta Era, the Trailing Sectors began to be settled, and a large part of the Slice between the Rimma Trade Route and the Corellian Run was explored, including the area that would become the Maerdocian sector.

By the start of the Great Hyperspace War around 5000 BBY, the Galactic Republic governed parts of the space that included the sector. By 4000 BBY, the rest of the sector had joined the civilized galaxy. The Republic maintained control until the Draggulch Period, when vast areas of the Rim were abandoned to slow the advance of the Sith.

Following a failed meeting on Eriadu and the assassination of four leaders, the Trade Federation began its military buildup in earnest in 32 BBY. War materials from Colla IV and Charros IV were moved to Enarc through the sector. By this point, Hutt Space had expanded to include Gyndine in the Expansion Region, annexing most of the sector.

Around 27 BBY, Tarshan Ring Excavations, a mining company operating in the Tarshan system within the sector, contacted the cloners of Kamino to produce cloned Humans for use as miners.

By 22 BBY and the beginning of the Clone Wars, the Hutt "bulge" in the eastern Mid Rim and Expansion Region became contested territory. The newly formed Confederacy of Independent Systems sought to control the area north of the Nanth'ri Route, while the Galactic Republic tried to reassert its influence over the southern part, which included the sector.

After the Galactic Empire arose, it committed numerous atrocities on worlds like Mon Calamari and New Plympto. The world of Chroma Zed in the Chroma Zed system, located in the northwestern Maerdocian sector, also became a source of slave labor.

Following the Empire's crippling at Endor, several extra-galactic factions attacked the galaxy in 4 ABY. The Nagai and their Tof pursuers—two species from Companion Besh—entered the Rim territories at the intersection of the Hydian Way and the Corellian Trade Spine. A second force of these two alien species advanced north, then east, crossing the Expansion Region and the Mid Rim, and passing through the Maerdocian sector before reaching Zeltros in the Inner Rim. The sector was spared from conflict for the next eleven years.

In 25 ABY, the Yuuzhan Vong, a warrior race from another galaxy, invaded known space at Vector Prime, where their worldships broke through the galactic barrier. During their advance, they attacked Mid Rim systems from the north, eventually capturing the Deneba system in the Maerdocian sector around 27 ABY. However, they surrendered a year later when Galactic Alliance forces recaptured Coruscant, the galactic capital, and rid it of vongforming.

By 137 ABY, Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire had authority over the sector.

Behind the scenes

The appendix of The Essential Atlas contained several mentions of the Maerdocian sector. Star Wars: The Essential Atlas Online Companion eventually established its location using Modi's map of the sectors in the Mid Rim.
