Mortis

Mortis was a spectral dimension within the Force, a place spoken of in ancient myths and legends passed down across countless years by Jedi, Sith, and even ordinary spacers. It was thought to exist beyond any known star system, perhaps even outside of the galaxy or even the universe itself. Some individuals posited that Mortis was the origin point of the Force.

Description

Mortis after nightfall

Mortis, a domain deeply connected to the Force, presented dreamlike settings; it defied cartography, and its landmarks shifted locations frequently. The daylight hours brought tranquility, with flourishing green fields, towering mountains, and breathtaking views. Diverse biomes were present, including deep forests, molten caverns, and mountains that floated in the sky. The light possessed a restorative effect, despite originating from no visible star. As night descended, the [plants](/article/plant] withered and perished, the creatures disappeared, and the few stars visible in the dark sky were unrecognizable. Searing rains engulfed the land, making survival without protection practically impossible.

Entry into this enigmatic planet was never intentional, as Mortis inexplicably drew its visitors in. Its manifestation varied; accounts described Mortis appearing as a colossal monolith adrift in space, while others reported simply walking through a doorway or arriving there without any clear cause. Time held no meaning within Mortis; what felt like days or weeks inside the realm transpired in mere seconds outside of it, a peculiar trait it shared with places like Ahch-To and Dagobah.

Inhabitants

Mortis was solely inhabited by three sentient beings, Force wielders engaged in an endless power struggle: the Son, embodying the destructive and lethal aspects of the realm and aligned with the dark side of the Force; the Daughter, representing peace and creation on Mortis and aligned with the light side of the Force; and the Father, who maintained equilibrium between the two opposing forces. Consequently, Mortis served as a pivotal point for the galaxy and a potent channel through which the Force flowed.

History

Mortis during the day

During the Clone Wars, the Father summoned Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano into the realm from the Chrelythiumn system. The Father recognized Skywalker as the foretold Chosen One, capable of sustaining the Force's balance between his two offspring after the Father died. This resulted in a conflict between the Force wielders and the three Jedi, which culminated in the deaths of all three Force wielders and the restoration of balance on Mortis.

The name of this ethereal realm was also given to the Phases of Mortis, a solution to the Unsolved Theorem of Master Thorpe that was contained within the sacred Jedi texts.

Behind the scenes

Mortis initially appeared in the episodes "Overlords," "Altar of Mortis," and "Ghosts of Mortis" during season three of the animated television show Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Later, it received mention in the Star Wars Rebels episodes "Wolves and a Door" and "A World Between Worlds," with the Mortis gods also being relevant to the mysterious and mystical plane known as the World Between Worlds.
