Murley

Murley, a Loth-cat, belonged to the Mandalorian Sabine Wren during the New Republic era, specifically the time period. He resided with Wren in the LothalNet comm tower E-272 located on the planet Lothal. Around the year 9 ABY, this cat was often in Wren's presence as she tried to decipher a compass that held a star map. He also briefly met Ahsoka Tano, Wren's former Master. Later, Wren embarked on a quest to locate the Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger, leaving Murley behind on Lothal.

Biography

Wren scratches Murley.

Sabine Wren, the Mandalorian artist, was the owner of Murley, a Loth-cat. She named the tooka and made his home with her in LothalNet comm tower E-272 on the planet Lothal during the New Republic Era, specifically around 9 ABY. Upon Wren's return to the tower after skipping a ceremony, Murley stirred from a nap and greeted his friend, receiving a chin scratch in return. Wren subsequently grabbed a container filled with special pellets, emptied the contents into a bowl, and placed it on a crate for Murley. While the cat ate, Wren petted him before viewing a hologram of her friend and fellow rebel, the Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger.

When Wren returned with a compass containing a star map acquired from Ahsoka Tano, her former Master, the feline was relaxing on a table. Murley showed interest in the compass, giving it a sniff before hissing and playfully batting at it. Wren scolded the creature and then projected a hologram of ruins on the world Arcana where Murley was standing, causing him to quickly jump down and leave. Later, the Mandalorian went to the tower's catwalk, where Murley joined her, meowing and looking up. Wren noticed and knelt down, petting Murley and mentioning an upcoming journey. The cat sniffed her and then screeched at the sight of a HK-87 assassin droid.

Later on, Murley interacted with Tano when she visited the tower, with Tano crouching down in front of the Loth-cat. When Tano went inside the tower, Murley stayed back but kept her in sight and wailed when a second assassin droid appeared and ambushed Tano. After Tano destroyed the droid, Murley hissed at its severed head. The Loth-cat then dozed off, but lifted his head when Wren came back. The Mandalorian then petted him. Wren eventually departed Lothal—and Murley—on a quest to locate Bridger, just as she had told her pet she would.

Personality and traits

Murley was a Loth-cat, a type of tooka. His fur, which felt soft, was a mix of tan and white, with patterns of brown spots and stripes scattered throughout. Murley had black eyes, black skin, and pointed ears, as well as sharp teeth and claws.

Murley

Even though he wasn't domesticated, Murley enjoyed spending time with Sabine Wren. He would greet her and follow her around her tower, finding the living space comfortable. He enjoyed being petted and having his chin scratched, purring when Wren did so. Murley also looked forward to meal times, sniffing and staring intently at Wren as she prepared his food, and licking his lips when he received it. Murley also frequently took naps among Wren's belongings and sometimes gave a silently judgmental stare.

The Loth-cat regarded the star compass Wren retrieved with suspicion, growling and batting at it. He ran away when Wren activated a hologram that projected into his space. The loyal tooka also displayed dislike for HK-87 assassin droids, hissing at them when they attacked Wren and Tano.

Skills and abilities

Murley was skilled at hunting, and able to provide food for himself while outdoors.

Behind the scenes

Murley was initially seen in a teaser for the Disney+ live-action television series Ahsoka, released on April 7, 2023. The Loth-cat's prop, created by Legacy Effects, was showcased at the Lucasfilm Pavillion during San Diego Comic-Con, which took place from July 20 to July 23 of the same year. Murley then made his debut in "Part One: Master and Apprentice" and "Part Two: Toil and Trouble," the first two episodes of the series, which premiered simultaneously on August 22, 2023. The official Star Wars Twitter account later revealed Murley's name on October 3 of that year, promoting a video from the Star Wars Lofi series featuring the cat.

Christian Alzmann's concept artwork of Murley from March 2022 depicts the Loth-cat with light-green eyes and white fur with gray patterns. This color scheme is a different representation compared to the black eyes and tan and white fur used in Ahsoka. Natasha Liu Bordizzo, who played Sabine Wren, mentioned that the cat's appearance during on-set rehearsals was a pleasant surprise, and she particularly liked his "hilarious little turkey legs." Murley's scenes were filmed using Industrial Light & Magic's proprietary StageCraft technology on a soundstage called "The Volume." Production teams used a combination of real puppets and digitally inserted versions after filming to bring the loth-cat to life.

In November 2023, Dave Filoni, the creator of the Ahsoka series, was a guest on Entertainment Weekly's Star Wars podcast, Dagobah Dispatch. Filoni, surprised by fans' concern for Murley's well-being, discussed the cat's ability to leave Wren's tower and his independence as a wild animal, even suggesting the possibility of a documentary focused on Murley. During the interview, Filoni used he/him pronouns to refer to Murley, which differed from the it/its pronouns used in the series' audio description available on Disney+.
