Nax

Having fought in the Clone Wars, Nax was a human male clone originating from Jango Fett's genetic material; he once functioned as a clone trooper within the Galactic Republic's Grand Army of the Republic, specifically the prestigious 501st Legion. By the time 9 BBY arrived, circumstances led him to live on the streets of the planet Daiyu, having been discharged from military service due to the Galactic Empire's implementation of Project War-Mantle. He once implored Obi-Wan Kenobi, a renegade Jedi Master, for credits to purchase a meal.

Biography

Around 29 BBY, on the planet Kamino, a human male clone derived from the DNA of Jango Fett was born. As a clone trooper within the Galactic Republic's Grand Army of the Republic's esteemed 501st Legion, he participated in the Clone Wars against the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Eventually, he adopted the designation "Nax" and fought in numerous engagements, including the battles of Teth, Christophsis, and Umbara. He was withdrawn from active combat after suffering significant injuries that resulted in shrapnel lodged in his right leg.

Nax ended up homeless and begging on the streets of Daiyu.

Following the Galactic Empire's rise to power in 19 BBY, Project War-Mantle was initiated to augment, and ultimately supersede, the clone troopers with volunteer and drafted soldiers. Due to his accelerated aging, the clone trooper was eventually deemed unsuitable for military duties, leaving him impoverished and forsaken. Rex incorporated a photograph of Nax in his book, titled The Secrets of the Clone Troopers, which saw publication sometime after the 5 ABY conclusion of the Galactic Civil War fought between the Empire, the Galactic Republic's successor state, and the Alliance to Restore the Republic. He used the book's concluding remarks to express his dismay at the Empire's treatment of clones following their departure from military service, pointing out their lack of equivalent rights compared to Imperial citizens.

By 9 BBY, Nax was a homeless resident of the planet Daiyu. On this planet, the veteran's hastened aging and past traumas had taken a toll, and he was largely forgotten, compelling him to request credits for survival. In that year, the clone entreated Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Master in-hiding who was searching for Leia Organa, the kidnapped princess of Alderaan, for credits to afford a meal. Kenobi complied, depositing some credits into the clone's helmet while concealing his lightsaber with his robe. The clone showed his gratitude with a nod to Kenobi, who then departed after a brief, solemn gaze at Nax.

Personality and traits

Around 9 BBY, Nax possessed tan-toned skin, long, unkempt, black hair, and a scruffy, graying beard and mustache. As a clone [trooper](/article/trooper], he stood at a height of 1.83 meters and had brown eyes.

Equipment

The clone veteran used his helmet to hold credits.

While experiencing homelessness on Daiyu, Nax wore soiled Phase II clone trooper armor marked with the blue insignia of the 501st Legion, along with a corresponding helmet that he utilized as a receptacle for credits. His arms were wrapped in bandages, and he donned a green poncho. Although he still wore the boots from his armor, he opted for brown pants instead of the leg and waist pieces. His leg still contained shrapnel from battlefield injuries.

Behind the scenes

The clone veteran made an appearance in "Part II" of the limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi, which was directed by Deborah Chow and premiered on May 26, 2022. Like other live-action clone troopers featured in the prequel trilogy films Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, he was played by Temuera Morrison. His identity as "Nax" was initially revealed during a Star Wars San Diego Comic-Con 2023 panel that unveiled details from the Star Wars: Dawn of Rebellion: The Visual Guide reference book, which was released in 2023. Nax's origins trace back to the Star Wars Legends continuity, with his debut in the 2008 novelization of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars film authored by Karen Traviss.

Morrison expressed his enjoyment of his cameo, deeming it the highlight of the series, although he felt it was too brief. He appreciated the veteran's grown-out hair and beard, and it marked the first instance of Morrison physically donning clone trooper armor while portraying a clone, as previous portrayals relied on CGI for the armor.
