Osh Scal

Osh Scal, a Kallidahin by species, held the position of technician for the Archaeological Research Council. He was stationed at a dig site located in the Polis Massa asteroid belt. His involvement became significant when Senator Padmé Amidala, pregnant and severely injured, arrived at the site near the conclusion of the Clone Wars in 19 BBY. Scal was among those who assisted her in the birth of her twin children, Luke and Leia, before her death.

Biography

Osh Scal, a technician of the Kallidahin species, was employed by the Archaeological Research Council at an archaeological excavation dig site situated on an asteroid within the Polis Massa asteroid field. The Kallidahins at the dig site were in search of explanations for the destruction of the planet Polis Massa, as well as traces of the extinct Eellayin species, whom they considered their ancestors.

In 19 BBY, as the Clone Wars drew to a close, Senator Bail Organa, along with the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, transported the wounded and heavily pregnant Senator Padmé Amidala to the dig site. The intention was for her to deliver her twins there. Scal was a member of a team that included two trained physicians and several xenobiologists who provided care to Amidala. Given the critical nature of her condition, the team did not even have time to change out of their caving jumpsuits.

Amidala was placed in a medical facility originally designed for treating researchers, not for childbirth. As she went into labor, Scal, along with fellow technician Dznori Xam, monitored and discussed the readouts on a nearby screen. During the actual delivery, the room was cleared, leaving only Kenobi, a GH-7 medical droid, and a midwife droid present. While the twins survived, Amidala died, having lost her will to live due to the perceived betrayal by her husband, Anakin Skywalker. She lived just long enough to name her children Luke and Leia.

Personality and traits

Osh Scal and Dznori Xam attended to Padmé Amidala in their caving jumpsuits as she prepared to give birth.

Due to limited prior interactions with humans, Osh Scal and the other Kallidahin technicians at Polis Massa possessed limited knowledge of human childbirth. They maintained a respectful distance and refrained from asking many questions of those accompanying the pregnant Padmé Amidala, although they were perplexed by their inability to save her. The Kallidahin were characterized by their purple-and-white skin and black eyes.

Equipment

Scal was equipped with a blue-and-brown, close-fitting caving jumpsuit that incorporated warming lines on the legs. The attire also featured leg warmers, a utility belt, a voice-activated comlink, and a shoulder-mounted droid summoner along with a shoulder lamp. Furthermore, the technician utilized a wrist-mounted tissue analyzer and a head-mounted signal light.

Behind the scenes

Osh Scal's initial appearance was in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, a film within the prequel trilogy that premiered on May 19, 2005. Within the established Star Wars canon, the character's name was officially revealed in the 2017 reference publication, Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia. The name originated in the Star Wars Legends reference book titled Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: The Visual Dictionary, authored by James Luceno and released on April 2, 2005.
