Politics
Politics revolved around the power dynamics between individuals within their communities and across different societies, encompassing governmental policies. Individuals who pursued these activities as a profession were called politicians, often chosen by voters through elections in democratic governance structures. Throughout the galaxy, there existed a multitude of governmental systems, including dictatorships and monarchy-based structures, which were subject to change during times of both conflict and tranquility. A well-known Corellian expression from the High Republic Era stated, "A politician's promise isn't worth anything." Indeed, Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi once cautioned against placing trust in politicians.
Forms of governance
Republic

A republic involved governance by elected officials and a chosen leader, rather than a monarch. The Galactic Republic, with its assembly of elected senators, constituted a galaxy-wide democracy. However, this system had its shortcomings. As acknowledged by Padmé Amidala, a senator of the Republic, elected representatives frequently struggled to reach agreements, and some were even susceptible to bribery. Furthermore, many of these representatives were inclined to prioritize their own interests and those of their home systems over the common good. The Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi believed that most senators were primarily concerned with satisfying their campaign sponsors, leading them to disregard democratic principles.
Monarchy
Royal descent

Within a monarchy, a single individual—referred to as king or queen based on gender—exercised authority over their people by birthright, establishing their legitimacy through ancestry. The Elder Houses consisted of ancient royal families throughout the galaxy.
However, the validity of a lineage could sometimes be disputed. During the Clone Wars, Prince Lee-Char of Mon Cala was destined to succeed his father Yos Kolina, but the Quarren inhabitants of the planet sought to install one of their own on the throne, leading them to engage in warfare against the rightful heir. Other planets governed by monarchies included Aleen, Toydaria, and Onderon. Certain monarchs, such as those of Naboo, were chosen through elections. On Alderaan, the throne was passed to the eldest child of the king or queen, but to be formally recognized as the heir, they had to successfully complete three trials of the body, heart, and the mind, which would be announced on the heir apparent's Day of Demand.
By the era of the New Republic, hereditary nobility was largely disregarded, even by the nobles themselves. Consequently, the noble titles on many planets became primarily symbolic.
Electoral monarchy
Hybrid forms of government also existed. On Naboo, the head of state was called a king or queen, despite being elected by the populace. They were supported by a group of ministers known as the Naboo Royal Advisory Council. Furthermore, the elected sovereign was limited to serving a maximum of two terms, as stipulated by the Naboo constitution.
Dictatorship

A dictatorship was a system of governance where a single individual held central authority, often possessing extensive executive powers. The dictator's power was frequently maintained through oppressive methods, such as suppressing the media, detaining political opponents, and employing pervasive security measures to monitor and manipulate public opinion in favor of the regime. Fascism was one type of dictatorship.
During the Clone Wars, the planet Quarzite was under the control of a Belugan dictator, Lord Otua Blank. When Sheev Palpatine, then Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, announced the establishment of the First Galactic Empire, the galactic government transitioned from a democracy to a dictatorship, specifically a fascist regime.
Governance by military leaders was termed stratocracy.
A significant non-governmental criminal organization led by a single individual, such as the criminal empire of the Hutt Jabba Desilijic Tiure, could also function as a dictatorship.
Empire

An empire represented an authoritarian framework of geopolitical organization where diverse territories and entities were unified under a shared, centralized executive power. Often, these territories were directly governed by a single galactic government, as exemplified by the Galactic Empire and its administrative structure. In other instances, empires exhibited greater complexity, functioning as hegemonies; in these cases, the various entities possessed devolved power, with territories maintaining their formal sovereignty, although many operated as vassal states under the dominion of the most influential government. The isolationist Chiss Ascendancy, a political entity where planets were controlled by the ruling houses of the Aristocra, serves as a fitting illustration.
Traditionally, many empires were ruled by a single leader, typically referred to as an emperor or empress, depending on their gender.
Alliance

An alliance was a union of diverse groups with a common objective. One such alliance was the Confederacy of Independent Systems, also known as the Separatist Alliance. The Confederacy was established by star systems seeking to secede from the Galactic Republic, citing government corruption and excessive taxation as their reasons. The Confederacy military received funding from major corporations such as the Corporate Alliance, the InterGalactic Banking Clan, the Techno Union, and the Trade Federation, whose leaders served on the Executive Separatist Council.
However, unbeknownst to the galaxy, the Confederacy was secretly manipulated by Sith Lord Darth Sidious, who exploited the Separatist Crisis and the Clone Wars to achieve his goal of restoring Sith dominance to the galaxy. The Confederacy presented itself as a democratic government, with the Separatist Senate comprising elected representatives from Separatist worlds.
The Alliance to Restore the Republic, also known as the Rebel Alliance, was formed from small resistance groups that coalesced into a larger rebellion against the Galactic Empire. The Rebel Alliance's stated intentions included opposing the Emperor and his forces, defying Imperial laws that violated the "rights of free beings," dismantling the Empire, and restoring freedom to the galaxy.
