Ray

The Ray, alternatively referred to as the Rayfish or blinding rayfish, represented a species of predatory scalefish that were originally from both the planet Naboo and Koboh. These rayfish were notable for their protruding lower jaw and a skeletal-like physical form. These creatures would feign death, patiently awaiting the arrival of their intended meal. Upon their prey getting close enough, these scalefish would unleash a blinding flash of light to stun them, subsequently delivering a single, fatal strike.

On Naboo, these scalefish could be observed inhabiting the waters surrounding the city of Otoh Gunga within Lake Paonga. They could also be located within the Abyss, where they were indiscriminately hunted by the larger colo claw fish and opee sea killers that resided there. Conversely, on Koboh, the scalefish were found within the planet's rock pools and watered ravines. There was an instance where a noble individual sought to keep a blinding rayfish as a domesticated animal. This person then chose to showcase the rayfish at a formal gathering, where a senator suffered blindness due to the creature's bioluminescent burst of light.

In 9 BBY, Skoova Stev, a Sakavian fisherman, managed to capture a blinding rayfish within a devastated High Republic settlement situated in the Stone Spires region. He then placed it inside the fish tank located in Pyloon's Saloon.

Behind the scenes

The ray made its initial appearance in the motion picture Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. Their official identification occurred in the Star Wars Legends reference material titled Star Wars: Episode I The Visual Dictionary. Its canon status was later validated in the reference work Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know.

Ray, along with fellow scalefish doo, mee, faa, see, laa, and tee, seem to allude to the real-world musical scale; specifically, ""Do, Re, Me, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do."
