Shollan

Shollan, a male Mon Calamari, held the rank of Lieutenant and served in the Alliance to Restore the Republic under the command of Admiral Raddus. Originating Hailing from Mon Cala, a waterworld, he, along with fellow Mon Calamari Caitken, assisted Raddus as aides. During 1 BBY, the trio participated in a briefing where the possibility of launching an attack on the planet Scarif to acquire the Death Star plans was under consideration. When a group of renegade rebels executed the mission, Raddus, accompanied by Shollan and Caitken, joined the assault aboard his flagship, the Profundity.

Throughout the battle at Scarif, Shollan provided Raddus with multiple updates. During the engagement, the Profundity, following instructions from Bodhi Rook, a former Imperial pilot on the planet's surface, successfully destroyed the Shield Gate. At that moment, Shollan excitedly informed Raddus that they were receiving a transmission originating from Scarif. Subsequently, the Death Star, whose schematics they had obtained, materialized from hyperspace. Raddus then ordered the fleet to initiate a jump to hyperspace; however, an Imperial-class Star Destroyer disabled the Profundity, leading to the demise of the majority of its crew.

Biography

Aide to the admiral

Caitken (left) and Shollan (right) served as aides to Admiral Raddus.

Coming hailed from the frigid polar regions of the waterworld Mon Cala, Shollan served as both a lieutenant and comms officer within the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Alongside his fellow Mon Calamari Caitken, Shollan acted as an aide to Admiral Raddus. Between 4 BBY and 3 BBY, they collaborated on a report detailing the condition of the Alliance Fleet starships, which Raddus then transmitted to Mon Mothma, the leader of the Alliance. During 1 BBY, Shollan and Caitken stood beside Raddus during a meeting held at the Alliance headquarters on the moon Yavin 4. Here, the Alliance High Command deliberated on the credibility of the information provided by Jyn Erso, a rebel recently rescued, regarding the Galactic Empire's Death Star superweapon. However, lacking full council support, an attack could not be sanctioned.

Despite this, Erso, in conjunction with numerous other rebels, commandeered a Zeta-class Heavy Cargo Shuttle that they had stolen from the Empire, with the intention of traveling to Scarif to personally steal the Death Star plans. A rebel soldier notified Raddus of this action, which he endorsed. With Shollan and Caitken at his side, he issued orders to prepare his flagship, the MC75 Star Cruiser Profundity, for immediate departure, and the ship was promptly made ready. Subsequently, the fleet initiated a hyperspace jump to link up with the rogue rebels, Rogue One.

Battle of Scarif

Shollan, Raddus, and Caitken on the Profundity

Upon the fleet's arrival at Scarif, Raddus directed the squadron leaders to their designated positions for their respective starfighters, while Shollan and Caitken interacted with the equipment built into their chairs. As the combat intensified, Raddus inquired of Shollan about the situation occurring within the Shield Gate below. However, Shollan reported that this information was unavailable and that they had attempted to contact the rebels there, but all rebel frequencies were being blocked, with the Shield Gate disrupting communications. Raddus turned to instruct him to persist in his attempts, and then ordered his aide to engage the Imperial I-class Star Destroyers and to begin probing the shield.

As rebel forces suffered losses in the battle, Shollan informed Raddus that their efforts were proving ineffective against the Shield Gate and that they were sustaining significant casualties, which the admiral acknowledged. When the Y-wing starfighters of Gold Squadron incapacitated an Imperial-class Star Destroyer, Shollan announced that the destroyer had lost power.

Receving the plans

Shollan informs Raddus of the transmission.

At that precise moment, Bodhi Rook, the former Imperial pilot who was located on Scarif, attempted to reach the rebel fleet to convey the necessity of breaching the Shield Gate in order to transmit the Death Star plans. He successfully contacted the Profundity, and Raddus confirmed to Rook that they were receiving him, with Shollan listening attentively. Rook explained that Erso and Captain Cassian Andor had located the Death Star plans but required the Shield Gate to be deactivated to transmit them. Consequently, Raddus instructed Shollan and the other rebels behind him to summon a Sphyrna-class Hammerhead corvette. The corvette successfully collided one Star Destroyer into another, causing both to crash onto the planet's surface and destroy the Shield Gate. Shollan rose from his seat as the plans were transmitted to the Profundity, excitedly informing Raddus that they were receiving a transmission from Scarif. Raddus ordered him to verify the data, and upon doing so, he eagerly informed the Admiral that they had acquired the plans.

However, the Death Star, whose plans they had just acquired, then emerged from hyperspace. Shollan and Caitken stood on the bridge to observe it. Shollan alerted Raddus to a significant energy buildup within the battle station, but the admiral interrupted him. The station targeted the Imperial security complex below, where Rogue One was trapped. Shollan, Raddus, and Caitken watched as the complex and the surrounding area were obliterated. After a moment of silence, Raddus ordered all ships to jump to hyperspace. While many ships successfully executed the jump, the Profundity was disabled by an arriving Star Destroyer and subsequently destroyed, resulting in the deaths of Raddus and all his subordinates.

Personality and traits

Shollan, along with Raddus and Caitken, displayed a strong desire to avenge the Mon Calamari for the Empire's actions against them. Both he and Caitken pledged their complete allegiance to Raddus. Shollan was a male Mon Calamari distinguished by his gray eyes and albino, white skin. Due to his origin in the colder regions of Mon Cala, his blood was reportedly exceptionally thick.

Skills and abilities

Shollan demonstrated proficiency in executing Raddus's commands. He possessed high intelligence and advanced diplomatic skills, alongside average levels of speed, strength, and combat prowess. He was not Force-sensitive.

Equipment

He wore a dark gray uniform featuring blue sleeves and a black belt. He also carried a datapad.

Behind the scenes

Shollan and Caitken on the set of Rogue One

Shollan was created for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an anthology film released on December 16, 2016. He was portrayed by Tim Rose, a puppeteer who previously portrayed another Mon Calamari, Admiral Gial Ackbar, in the 1983 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi. Rose was credited as a creature puppeteer. During the production of Rogue One, after a six-hour filming session without breaks, Rose raised one of Shollan's hands to signal his need for a bathroom break, which was subsequently granted. The designs of Shollan and Caitken were reminiscent of Admiral Gial Ackbar from the 1983 original trilogy film Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, albeit with different coloration, while Raddus presented a more novel Mon Calamari aesthetic.

Footage featuring Shollan was initially presented in a reel of Rogue One footage unveiled at Celebration Europe on July 15 of that year. Shollan's identity was confirmed in Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide, the companion reference book to Rogue One, which was released on the same day as the film. The coloring book Art of Coloring: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, published on December 20 of that year, verified that Shollan was the Mon Calamari referred to as "lieutenant" within the film.

In the Rogue One novelization by Alexander Freed, the line "Sir! Enemy fighters coming in!" is mistakenly attributed to Shollan, whereas the film depicts Caitken delivering the line.
