Serving as an emblem, a signet denoted a significant achievement, like a successful hunt or victory, and helped to identify Mandalorian clans. Furthermore, it characterized each Mandalorian's true purpose.
As an example, the mudhorn became Din Djarin's designated signet after he vanquished the creature. This occurred after his armor sustained considerable damage during a confrontation with one on Arvala-7.
Once selected, the signet would be crafted and affixed to the warrior's armor. The Armorer, who aided Mandalorians in their search for their signets, forged Djarin's signet from beskar and unveiled it. Clans like Eldar would showcase their signet on flags and banners during initiation rituals.
The House Vizsla symbol functioned as a peaceful era sigil, existing before the Death Watch coup. By 1 BBY, the signet representing House Kast took the form of a serpentine vexis, while Clan Eldar's signet was a leonid symbol.
Around 9 ABY, Din Djarin visited the Armorer inside the Tribe's covert after acquiring a beskar ingot. She inquired whether his signet had been revealed, to which Djarin responded that it hadn't been determined yet, but the Armorer assured him it would be identified soon.
After completing a bounty, Djarin returned to the Armorer, disclosing that his armor had been damaged in a battle against a mudhorn. The Armorer suggested forging a mudhorn signet for him, but Djarin declined, stating he couldn't accept it as it wasn't a noble kill, because Grogu assisted him, whom he considered an enemy at the time. Upon hearing this, the Armorer utilized the beskar he provided to instead forge whistling birds.
Following a skirmish with Imperial forces, Djarin, accompanied by IG-11, Carasynthia Dune, and Greef Karga, sought refuge in the enclave, where they encountered the Armorer. After introducing Grogu to her, the Armorer declared him a foundling under Djarin's care, entrusting him with the task of reuniting the child with his species. She then forged the mudhorn signet and affixed it to Djarin's pauldron, thereby establishing his clan.
The signet made its initial appearance in Star Wars Rebels: Heroes of Mandalore. It was first identified in Chapter 1 of the 2019 Disney+ television program The Mandalorian, which was broadcast on November 12, 2019. The Star Wars Book verified its initial appearance.
