A jail, otherwise called a detention block or a prison, represented a location where people were incarcerated, encompassing specialized buildings as well as entire planets. The majority of galactic governing bodies, including the Galactic Republic, the Galactic Empire, and also the New Republic, ran prisons to hold criminals, political objectors, or people regarded as too hazardous to remain in society. Certain prisons were structured as factories where prisoners performed labor throughout their sentences; this setup was known as a prison factory, penal work camp, or work camp. Other facilities, created for those who committed the most severe offenses, were known as supermax prisons.
During the High Republic Era, the Galactic Republic managed several prisons throughout the galaxy, including the Republic Correctional Facility located on the planet Pipyyr, the Citadel on Lola Sayu that was constructed in 522 BBY with aid from the Jedi Order for containing rebellious Jedi, and a detention center on Starlight Beacon. Simultaneously, the Jedi Order itself possessed a highly secure prison within the Jedi Temple situated on the planet Coruscant, the capital, which was used to confine Sith and other followers of the Dark-siders.
As the Clone Wars broke out, the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the warring factions, developed their current prison systems to detain newly captured adversaries. The Republic ran a prison specifically for high-ranking Separatist officers inside the Republic Center for Military Operations along with the high-security Republic Judiciary Central Detention Center, which served to detain ordinary criminals. The Jedi Order relinquished control of the Citadel, which was seized by the Separatists upon their conquest of Lola Sayu; however, at some point during that era, they established the Sason Temple, utilized for containing a Starweird.
Besides the newly acquired Citadel, the Confederacy of Independent Systems also ran the space station prisons Starlag XIX and Sunspot, the Unreal City, and also a top-secret detention wing located in Dooku's Castle Serenno, which he used to hold the Jedi Quinlan Vos.
Following the Republic's transformation into the Galactic Empire, the new government took control of many of the Republic's former prisons, including those at the Center for Military Operations and the Judiciary Detention Center. During the Rebellion era, there existed a thousand Imperial prisons throughout the galaxy, including the Spire fortress located on the planet Stygeon Prime and the Arrth-Eno Custodial Complex on the capital planet Coruscant. The Death Star featured detention block where Governor Wilhuff Tarkin detained Princess Leia Organa up until she was rescued by Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. The Empire also maintained a clandestine prison referred to as the Crypt situated on the outer edges of the Anoat system.
The Empire also oversaw a significant number of penal work camps, such as the labor camp on the moon Narkina 5, the Delrian Prison Planet, the Oovo Four detention center—which was protected by Firespray-31-class patrol and attack craft—, the Imperial Detention Center & Labor Camp LEG-817 and Jubilar. Supermax prisons were used for those who committed Class One Offenses, the most serious crimes under the Imperial Legal Code.
Following the Galactic Civil War's conclusion, the Alliance to Restore the Republic, which was victorious, reorganized as the New Republic and assumed control of numerous Imperial facilities, including Delrian prison and Oovo Four. The New Republic also operated other facilities like the Karthon Chop Fields.
The largest jail on Cantonica was located at the Canto Bight police headquarters.
