Nomi's doubts
Nomi Sunrider, who is now being taught by Master Thon in the ways of the Jedi, is sitting outside on the planet Ambria with her daughter Vima. Vima is playing with some neeks. Vima pursues the neeks to the dangerous Lake Natth, where a couple of hssiss appear and quickly frighten the neeks away. Nomi gives chase after Vima and rescues her by employing her battle meditation against the creatures, which causes them to turn on one another.
Nomi cautions Vima to stay away from the lake. Nomi is having trouble accepting her Jedi path as she comes to grips with her recently discovered Force powers. The dark side influence emanating from Lake Natth only serves to heighten these anxieties. Nomi is still suffering from the death of her deceased husband Andur Sunrider, and she is perplexed as to why the Force let him down on the day he was killed.
When Vima inquires as to whether her father will be returning, Nomi expresses her desire for it to be so but states that she does not anticipate ever seeing or hearing from him again. Jedi Master Thon, aware of Nomi's suffering and sorrow, has given her space for a few months. He is aware of bigger occurrences occurring in other regions of the galaxy through the Force. Thon predicts that Nomi will rise to become a legendary Jedi whose heroic deeds will be remembered for as long as the Jedi Knights endure.
A pirate expedition
In the Stenness Node, captain Finhead Stonebone's pirate gang ambushes ore-shuttler Captain Gruna's Ithullan ore hauler. Gruna's security, hired from Bogga the Hutt, shows up, but the lone pilot Dreebo's Light tactical fighter is shot down, rendering them largely ineffective. Captain Finhead's E-2 Asteroid Miners Marauder Starjacker and Stenness Raider extend their long snouts into the ore hauler, sucking up enormous quantities of mutonium and prisoners.
The pirates are soon sucked up by Bogga's Core Galaxy Systems Dreadnaught Enforcer One, which is headed for Bogga's private moon orbiting Taboon, which is bad luck for them. The prisoners are forced out of their marauder ships by a number of armed Weequay guards. Finhead is shocked to learn that Boga, the Stenness Worlds' crime lord, has a presence in the area.
Oss and Tott's departure
Oss Wilum is back on Ambria, fixing the broken A-3DO. Due to the planet's isolation, it took him several months to find the necessary parts. Wilum explains that Thon wanted to test himself and pushed the dark side energies back into the wilderness when Nomi questions why Master Thon chose to live in such a desolate place. Nomi is terrified of Master Thon, but Oss defends him, calling him the best Jedi Master he has ever encountered, but cautioning that he can be intimidating and difficult.
Oss informs Nomi that he will be leaving with the Twi'lek Tott Doneeta to help Master Arca Jeth and his students Ulic and Cay Qel-Droma with the recent Naddist Uprising on Onderon. Nomi and Vima remain on Ambria with Master Thon.
Hutt entanglements
The Enforcer One transports Finhead Stonebone and his fellow pirates to Bogga's palace on the Taboon moon to face justice. Bogga is interacting with Gudb, one of his underlings, who was unable to obtain the Adegan crystals for him. Bogga makes a threat to feed him to Ktriss, his pet hssiss.
Finhead is brought before Bogga a short while later to be "sentenced" for robbing Captain Gruna, a friend of his. Bogga chooses to show Finhead "mercy" in place of killing him and tells him about his issues with Master Thon, who is in possession of his Adegan crystals.
Nomi's fears
Nomi, in the meantime, discovers that she can communicate with Master Thon through the Force. Thon informs her that she will use the adegan crystals to construct her first lightsaber as her daughter Vima snuggles with an Ewok toy. Nomi, however, is still troubled by the fact that she murdered the criminals who killed her husband Andur.
Thon informs Nomi that she acted in self-defense as opposed to revenge. He informs her that she has demonstrated exceptional natural aptitude with the lightsaber. Nomi replies that she will only accept her training if she is not required to wield a lightsaber. Thon gives in and takes Nomi and Vima on a tour of her world, despite the fact that he thinks Nomi is destined to wield a lightsaber.
Nomi invites A-3DO before leaving, but the droid declines because of his joints. Nomi instructs A-3D0 to take their ship and inform Master Chamma of everything that has transpired in the event that they and Master Thon do not return. While Nomi is afraid of Master Thon, Vima does not share her mother's fear of the alien.
Impressed into Hutt service
Finhead declines the job offer and requests a simpler one because he is unwilling to face a Jedi. Bogga gives a Weequay guard the order to release Roko, Finhead's first mate. Graballa lets loose his Hssiss Ktriss on Roko, who is killed in front of the other pirates and Graballa. Finhead consents to find and kill Bogga, who uses Roko's passing to teach ore pirates the value of not stealing from him.
Bogga then forces Captain Finhead into his employ, permitting him to conduct business in other systems in exchange for yearly tributes. Bogga commands the pirate to leave after reiterating his demand to bring the Adegan crystals and Master Thon's remains, as Ktriss dislikes Finhead's stench.
