Thom Hudd

Thom Hudd was a male human thief. During the Galactic Civil War, he held the rank of lieutenant within the Alliance to Restore the Republic. He was a crew member aboard the Auric starship, serving under the command of Commander Lina Graf. He participated in a mission that resulted in the ship being attacked by TIE fighters, forcing them to crash land on Mustafar, a volcanic planet under Imperial control.

Biography

Hudd once recounted a tale he referred to as "the Curse of the Nameless," a story sharing its title with entities featured in Jedi Order lore. During the Galactic Civil War against the Galactic Empire, Hudd enlisted with the Rebel Alliance, serving as a lieutenant under Lina Graf, who commanded the Auric. During one particular mission, the Auric was compelled to make an emergency landing on Mustafar, where Hudd witnessed a nightmarish castle. Following the Auric's crash, Hudd, Graf, and the rest of the crew managed to evacuate before the ship was completely engulfed by lava.

Hudd opposed entering the castle due to the presence of lava troopers. Subsequently, he was attacked by several larva creatures. Hudd and the crew then encountered the parent of the larva, a Kubaza beetle. After XM-G3 eliminated the beetle, Hudd shared a story with the crew about events that transpired on Bray during the Clone Wars. Following this, the crew was confronted by the lava troopers.

While Graf and G3 engaged the lava troopers, Hudd, CR-8R, and Skritt made their way towards the castle's entrance, where Hudd skillfully picked the lock. Upon entering, Hudd discovered a statue and attempted to pilfer it. He was then confronted by several security droids, screamed in terror, and vanished. By the time Graf and her crew arrived, Hudd was nowhere to be found, with only the statue remaining on the floor. Vaneé informed Graf that Hudd had become the latest victim of Sith Lord Darth Vader.

Escape from Darth Vader's Castle

After Graf's escape, Hudd was subjected to torture by Vaneé using a torture web. He managed to break free and evade Vaneé, engaging in a game of Hide and Seek with Vaneé and the training droids throughout the Fortress.

Vaneé and his droids eventually recaptured Hudd and returned him to the torture web. Just as Vaneé was about to resume the torture, an Inquisitor ordered that Hudd be handed over to her. However, Vaneé recognized the Inquisitor as Rebel Intelligence Commander Lina Graf in disguise. Graf successfully freed Hudd. While Graf battled Vaneé, Hudd managed to distract Vaneé by blinding him. Hudd and Graf then boarded an Imperial shuttle and escaped the Fortress before Lord Vader's arrival.

Return to Vader's Castle

Between 4 and 5 ABY after the Battle of Yavin 4, Hudd and Skritt were conducting salvage operations at a former Imperial outpost on Karken. During this period, Hudd dreamt of participating in a volunteer mission to Dagobah with Commander Luke Skywalker. While he and Skritt were working, Commander Graf and Captain Jaxxon T. Tumperakki arrived in the Rabbit's Foot. They sought his assistance in locating her brother, Milo Graf. Hudd accompanied them to Mustafar. Hudd then discussed Lina's dream with her after she awoke. He and the others disembarked the ship to search for Milo, entering the Fortress. When confronted by an apparition of Vader, Hudd threw Skritt at Vader, who was revealed to be Crater. Hudd then realized that Vaneé was still alive. Hudd and the others were subsequently stunned by Vaneé. He was then imprisoned as Vaneé, believing Vader was still communicating with him through the fumes, attempted to resurrect him using Milo. However, the attempt failed. Hudd, the Grafs, Tumperakki, and Skritt managed to escape the fortress with assistance from the Force spirit of Anakin Skywalker.

Behind the scenes

Thom Hudd's initial appearance was in the 2018 canon comic Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader's Castle 1, penned by Cavan Scott and illustrated by Derek Charm. The concept of Hudd being a thief originated from the original flashback narrative for the series' fifth issue, which involved a thief infiltrating Vader's fortress. Hudd's name and partial likeness were inspired by Tom Huddleston, the co-author of Star Wars: Adventures in Wild Space, a seven-part Star Wars young reader novel series in which Scott had previously been involved.
