The Tolonda sector, situated in the Outer Rim Territories, shared borders with both the Lol and Pelgrin sectors; it was a sector. During the High Republic Era, this sector was located within the Galactic Republic's Galactic Frontier exploration zone. In 230 BBY, the formation of the Occlusion Zone resulted in the Tolonda sector becoming part of it, as it was one of the ten sectors sealed off by a barrier that prevented hyperspace travel.

When the High Republic Era was underway, the Galactic Republic designated the Galactic Frontier in a section of the Outer Rim; the Tolonda sector was included in this designation. The Frontier was considered distant enough from the center of the galaxy to warrant sending explorers. The Nihil marauder organization formed the Occlusion Zone in 230 BBY; this zone was a section of space in the Outer Rim's Frontier, situated behind the Stormwall barrier that prevented hyperspace travel.
Being one of the ten sectors that made up the Occlusion Zone's boundary, the Tolonda sector was isolated from the rest of the Republic, forcing its inhabitants to pay tributes to the Nihil. Several weeks later, in 229 BBY, the Vurk Jedi Master Harli Cogra wrote a book called Chronicles of the Jedi, which chronicled the Jedi of the High Republic Era. In the book's afterword, Cogra expressed sorrow over the creation of the Nihil's zone and its impact on the ten sectors.
Within current Star Wars canon, the ten sectors that constitute the Occlusion Zone were initially mentioned, though not identified, in a flashback scene within the second issue of the Star Wars: The High Republic: Eye of the Storm comic-book miniseries. Charles Soule penned the issue, which Marvel Comics released on March 2, 2022 as part of Phase I of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia initiative. Later, the first issue of the 2023 Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures comic series identified the Tolonda sector by name and confirmed its status as one of the Occlusion Zone sectors through a map. Daniel José Older was the writer, Harvey Tolibao and Nick Brokenshire provided the illustrations, and Dark Horse Comics published the issue on December 6, 2023, as part of Phase III.
The Tolonda sector has its roots in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it initially appeared in the 1989 roleplaying adventure Otherspace. Bill Slavicsek authored this adventure, which West End Games published for use with their Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. The sector received its first visual representation on a map in 2012, designed by Modi and featured in The Essential Atlas Extra: Outer Rim Sectors, a component of the StarWars.com Online Companion for the 2009 reference work, The Essential Atlas.
