Torban Buck

Torban Buck, a Chagrian male Jedi Master known as "Buckets of Blood," dedicated his service to the Jedi Order as a healer during the era of the High Republic. He found himself aboard the Jedi Padawan learning cruiser Star Hopper, alongside Master Yoda, when the vessel and its occupants were compelled to respond to the fallout resulting from the Great Hyperspace Disaster within the Trymant system. Their initial plan involved addressing the largest pieces of space debris, while the apprentices were to aid the civilians. However, a battle erupted with a group of Nihil pirates present on Trymant IV, prompting Buck and Yoda to intervene.

Biography

Torban Buck, a male Chagrian, held the esteemed rank of Jedi Master within the Jedi Order throughout the High Republic Era. Additionally, he served as a Jedi healer. Around 232 BBY, Buck became part of the crew of the Padawan Academic Cruiser Star Hopper, acting as one of the two Jedi Masters responsible for instructing a group of Padawans undergoing training on the starship. He was joined by Grand Master Yoda, who was on a break from his duties on the Jedi High Council. Buck's role was to educate the Padawans in the fundamentals of first aid.

During this period, the catastrophic Great Hyperspace Disaster occurred in the Hetzal system, marked by the destruction of the freighter Legacy Run in hyperspace. Consequently, Emergences of debris began to materialize across the Outer Rim Territories. When an Emergence took place in the Trymant system, the Star Hopper was the only Jedi or Galactic Republic vessel close enough to respond, leading to its redirection to provide assistance. Yoda gathered the class of apprentices and requested reports on the situation, as hyperspace debris was rapidly approaching Bralanak City, the most populated area on the planet Trymant IV. Buck informed the class that he and Yoda would manage the largest debris fragments, while the Padawans were tasked with aiding people on the ground and dealing with smaller debris pieces. The Padawans were subsequently deployed in their rescue speeders.

While assisting civilians in the city, Padawan Lula Talisola and her companions attempted to seize control of a large Spider Cruiser that had arrived in the city, intending to use it as an evacuation vehicle. However, the ship was the property of Nihil pirates, who were unwilling to comply with the request. As Talisola, her close friends Farzala Tarabal and Qort, along with Force-sensitive civilian Zeen Mrala, who was using telekinesis to hold back a large piece of debris, found themselves surrounded by the pirates, Buck and Yoda arrived just before the pirates could attempt to execute them.

Around 230 BBY, Buck was with Qort, who had recently undergone his knighting, aboard the space station Starlight Beacon during its attack by the Nihil. Their mission was to evacuate a group of younglings from the station as they were being hunted by strange creatures that had been brought aboard. Eventually, they encountered Jedi investigator Emerick Caphtor and private investigator Sian Holt, who had arrived to investigate the creatures. Qort arranged for the younglings to be taken aboard Holt's ship, and the Jedi then attempted to locate one of the creatures so Capthor could gather the necessary information.

Caphtor's efforts were unsuccessful, but Holt managed to retrieve a severed claw from one of the creatures. The group returned to Holt's ship, where Buck insisted that Caphtor leave the station with Qort and the younglings, and then inform the Jedi Council of his findings. Buck then explained to Caphtor that his own mission on the station was not yet complete, and he handed over his robe, covered in the blood of the creature, to Caphtor for analysis, stating that he no longer needed it. Now clad only in his undergarments, Buck urged Caphtor to depart, reminding him that he and Qort had already said their goodbyes. The Chagrian wished Caphtor "May the Force be with you" as he headed down a corridor.

Personality and traits

Torban Buck was a Chagrian male characterized by his blue skin. Lula Talisola observed that Buck possessed an exceptional ability to remain composed and calm during critical situations, and that he displayed no signs of the insecurities she herself struggled with. However, he also had a flair for the dramatic, often using the moniker "Buckets of Blood" when announcing his presence, particularly when entering combat. This habit sometimes made others uncomfortable. As a healer by profession, Buck was apprehensive about being solely responsible for the safety of the Padawans during battles.

Powers and abilities

Torban Buck's mastery of the Force was sufficient to earn him the rank of Jedi Master. As a skilled healer, he was also a talented instructor, stationed on the Star Hopper to provide basic first aid training to the Padawan class. Consequently, while he was a capable fighter, he preferred not to engage in prolonged combat, as it was not his area of expertise.

Equipment

Torban Buck wore traditional brown Jedi robes and wielded a lightsaber with a blue blade.

Behind the scenes

Torban Buck made his debut appearance in the 2021 comic book The High Republic Adventures (2021) 1, penned by Daniel José Older, illustrated by Harvey Tolibao, and released by IDW Publishing on February 3, 2021. Prior to the comic's release, Older introduced the character during the live launch event for the Star Wars: The High Republic publishing initiative on January 4, 2021.

Older drew inspiration for Buck's nickname from stories he heard during his time as a paramedic, where a colleague would identify himself as "Buckets of Blood" when responding to calls over the radio. The plot summary for The High Republic Adventures 1 initially listed the Jedi Masters in charge of the Star Hopper as Yoda and "Baro," which Older suggested was a holdover from an earlier draft.
