Unidentified Verpine smuggler

A male Verpine, identified by his gender, functioned as a smuggler during the era of the Galactic Civil War. This smuggler was approached by remnants of the former Imperial military on the planet of Abednedo, who sought clandestine transportation off-world. However, the Verpine instead informed the New Republic, effectively betraying the Imperials to the emergent government. Alphabet Squadron of the New Republic, under the command of Lieutenant Yrica Quell, were dispatched to investigate these claims. Quell encountered the Verpine, who presented the captured Imperials. Quell and her squadron attempted to escort the smuggler and his light freighter to the New Republic, but TIE bombers ambushed them as they departed Abednedo. Alphabet Squadron tried to defend the smuggler, but a bomber impacted the freighter, resulting in its destruction and the death of both the Verpine and the Imperial prisoners.

Biography

Adaptations

During the time of the Galactic Civil War fought between the forces of the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic, the Verpine worked in the occupation of a smuggler. In the weeks that followed the Empire's defeat at the Battle of Endor, and the subsequent Operation: Cinder campaign, the smuggler was approached by multiple Imperials on the planet of Abednedo. These Imperials were survivors of the failed Imperial attack on Abednedo during Operation: Cinder, and they desired secure passage away from the reach of the New Republic. The Verpine, however, double-crossed the Imperials, selling them out to the New Republic for his own gain. Upon receiving an encrypted message from the Verpine concerning the presence of surviving Imperials, the New Republic sent the newly formed starfighter squadron known as Alphabet Squadron to verify the information and locate the alleged Imperial remnants.

Lieutenant Yrica Quell led Alphabet Squadron, which included pilots Chass na Chadic and Kairos, as they landed in the city of Neshorino on Abednedo. Quell and Chadic found the Verpine in the House of Strangers, the section of the city set aside for non-Abednedos, but Quell initially mistook him for a street trader. Communicating through a comlink using a damaged protocol droid, the Verpine confirmed that Quell and Chadic were with the New Republic and requested payment for his information. When the New Republic pilots demanded proof of Imperial presence, the Verpine revealed one of the captured Imperial prisoners.

The Verpine offered to show the pilots the remaining Imperials, and Quell decided to follow the smuggler, while Chadic escorted the prisoner back to Kairos's U-wing. The smuggler guided Quell to the light freighter where the rest of the prisoners were being held. Quell, a former Imperial herself, was horrified by the Verpine's actions, but she accepted the deal and inquired about his price.

Imperial attack

However, while Chadic was returning the first prisoner to the U-wing, a group of Imperials ambushed her. Kairos killed the Imperials, but the attack forced Alphabet Squadron to evacuate Abednedo. The Verpine agreed to transport the freighter filled with prisoners back to the New Republic cruiser Lodestar, but he insisted that Quell escort him. Shortly after the attack on Chadic and Kairos, the cavern where the Verpine's freighter was located also came under attack, and Quell defended the freighter in her X-wing.

As the ships departed Abednedo, they were pursued by TIE bombers, and the rest of Alphabet Squadron assisted in defending the Verpine's freighter. The pilots managed to destroy two of the TIEs, but one escaped and headed toward the freighter. Quell and fellow pilot Wyl Lark attempted to intercept the fighter, but instead of firing on the freighter, the TIE intentionally crashed into it. Both the TIE bomber and the freighter were destroyed, resulting in the deaths of the Verpine and all the Imperial prisoners on board.

Personality and traits

The smuggler, a male Verpine, made the decision to betray the Imperial holdouts on Abednedo to the New Republic instead of providing them with the discreet transportation they had requested. The Verpine viewed the prisoners as commodities, demanding payment from the New Republic for the transaction.

Equipment

The Verpine communicated with the aid of a damaged protocol droid, whose voice was transmitted through a comlink held by the smuggler. The smuggler piloted a battered and filthy Ghtroc 690 light freighter. While on Abednedo, the Verpine wore multiple layers of scarves.
