Yuzzum

Sentient beings from the Forest Moon of Endor, the species known as Yuzzums were endemic to that world. One Yuzzum, Joh Yowza, was known for his occasional singing performances with the Max Rebo Band, while another, Wam Lufba, made his living as an exterminator.

Biology and appearance

Yuzzums, a sentient species, possessed a shaggy coat of fur and walked upright on two legs. Their bodies were stout, and their long legs gave them the speed to chase down prey across the plains of Endor. They also had slender arms with four-fingered hands, a pair of eyes on the front of their head, and antenna-like ears. Their mouths were wide, filled with dull teeth. Their long limbs made them taller than the Ewoks.

Society and culture

Joh Yowza, a Yuzzum singer

Yuzzums, described as "dreamy wanderers," used only the most rudimentary tools, in contrast to the Ewoks, who had a more advanced stone-age level of technology. They domesticated and rode rakazzak beasts for hunting "rugger," small rodents that lived in tall grasses, which they enjoyed eating roasted. The Yuzzums communicated using their own language, which bore the same name, and they were also considered to be gifted singers. They were known for brewing a potent wine, so strong that non-Yuzzums could only safely drink it when mixed with the Ewoks' milder, sweeter wine.

Yuzzums in the galaxy

Some Yuzzums left their homeworld, the plains of the Forest Moon of Endor, aboard passing starships and established populations on other planets. A Yuzzum was present during the arrest of Momin a long time before the Imperial Era. By 4 ABY in the standard galactic year, a Yuzzum vocalist named Joh Yowza was a member of the Max Rebo Band, performing at Jabba's Palace on Tatooine, the desert planet. Another Yuzzum, Wam Lufba, worked as an exterminator there.

Behind the scenes

The Yuzzums were initially conceived for Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, released in 1983, which was the final film in the original trilogy of Star Wars. The initial intention was for them to be a companion species to the Ewoks on Endor within the film. However, the cost of creating them in large numbers proved prohibitive. As a result, only a single Yuzzum puppet was made, which ended up as a background character in Jabba the Hutt's palace. When an extended musical sequence was added to the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi in 1997, the Yuzzum design was revisited using computer animation.

In Jason Fry's 2018 replica journal Solo: A Star Wars Story: Tales from Vandor, Yuzzums are listed among "big bruiser species," alongside the Wookiees, Houks, and Gigorans. However, Fry has acknowledged that he actually meant Yuzzem, the large, furry humanoids that were first introduced in the 1978 Legends novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye.
