Bombardier (individual)

Lord Bombardier was once a male human who, before the Galactic Empire's demise, held the position of facilities planning officer within its ranks. Following this, he became a participant in the New Republic Amnesty Program, where he contributed to the reconstruction of the Outer Rim planet Plazir-15 as part of his rehabilitation. During this time, he developed a romantic relationship with a member of the world's royal family, leading to their marriage. Subsequently, the pair were elected to govern Plazir-15's absolute democracy in its inaugural election.

In the time frame of approximately 9 ABY, Imperial droids, which had been repurposed for civic duties on Plazir-15, started to malfunction and pose a danger to the populace. Given that the world lacked a military or armed police force, Bombardier and his wife, who now held the ranks of captain and Duchess, respectively, sought assistance from the visiting Mandalorians Bo-Katan Kryze and Din Djarin to resolve the droid issue. Together, they successfully identified Commissioner Helgait of Plazir-15 as the source of the malfunctions, ultimately presenting him to the Duchess and Bombardier in custody.

Biography

Rehabilitated wonderboy

Captain Bombardier and the Duchess ruled Plazir-15 from a domed city.

During the Galactic Civil War against the Alliance to Restore the Republic, Bombardier, a male human, was a facilities planning officer within the Galactic Empire. After the Alliance, which evolved into the New Republic, triumphed over the Empire, Bombardier joined the New Republic Amnesty Program. His rehabilitation involved overseeing reconstruction efforts on Plazir-15, an Outer Rim world severely affected by Imperial rule. A key part of this was Bombardier's personal oversight of the program that re-programmed Imperial droids for peaceful civic duties.

While aiding in the rebuilding process, Bombardier and a member of the royal family on the planet fell in love and got married. Believing it was time for Plazir-15 to transition into a new era, they were elected to lead an independent pluralistic society in Plazir-15's initial democratic elections. As both royals and elected officials, Bombardier and his wife governed the absolute democracy and hired a group of Mandalorian privateers led by Axe Woves for protection. This was necessary because Plazir-15's charter, due to Bombardier's Imperial background, prohibited the presence of a military.

Arrival of the tenacious three

Around 9 ABY, Bombardier had achieved the rank of captain, while his wife held the title of duchess. The reprogrammed droids on Plazir-15 allowed residents to focus on leisure, as they no longer needed to work; however, the pair became aware of malfunctions among the droids. Initially, these were minor, such as unexpected power cycles or deleted task stacks, but they escalated into traffic accidents, assaults, and heavy equipment failures, endangering the citizens.

Because the citizens had become so reliant on the droids, they voted against shutting them down. However, the world's constabulary, being unarmed, couldn't handle the malfunctioning droids. The privateers were also unable to intervene, as Plazir-15's charter forbade any standing army from entering the domed city where Bombardier and the Duchess resided.

When the Mandalorian Princess Bo-Katan Kryze and her companions Din Djarin and Grogu arrived on Plazir-15 in search of Woves and his forces, the royals saw an opportunity to solve their droid problem. After automated guidance directed Kryze's vessel to the domed city, the visitors were informed that the world's leaders had requested a mandatory audience. They were then transported to a rotunda-like structure where Bombardier and the Duchess were hosting a party. Upon their arrival, the captain stood up and invited Kryze and Djarin to join him and his wife as honored guests at the head of the table.

A high fidelity couple

Captain Bombardier and the Duchess hosted Bo-Katan Kryze, Din Djarin, and Grogu on Plazir-15.

After the pair were seated, Bombardier and the Duchess introduced themselves and shared their backgrounds, with Grogu leaping into the Duchess's lap at her invitation. When Kryze requested to speak with the privateers, who were stationed outside the city, Bombardier stated that a meeting was conditional. Leading the trio of newcomers onto a balcony away from the other guests, the captain and the Duchess explained their droid issues.

Since weapons were integral to Mandalorian culture, Kryze and Djarin were allowed to keep theirs inside the city, despite the usual restrictions. The couple hoped the Mandalorians could handle the remaining malfunctioning droids. Having learned from Woves that Kryze aimed to reclaim the Mandalorian homeworld of Mandalore, Bombardier explained that if the Mandalorians helped, it would be seen as cooperation between the two worlds. Plazir-15 would then recognize Mandalore as a sovereign system and petition the New Republic to do the same. Although Kryze said she had given up on ruling Mandalore, she and Djarin agreed to assist, leaving Grogu with the Duchess and Bombardier to begin their investigation.

This is not actually the key to our world, this is just a tribute

Captain Bombardier and the Duchess played a game involving pillbugs as they waited for the Mandalorians.

While awaiting the return of their new allies, the Duchess and Bombardier played a game involving bouncing pill bugs through scoring hoops. Grogu used the Force to help the Duchess score a quadro-blast, prompting cheers from the crowd and the captain to remark that he had never seen such a streak. As the celebration subsided, Kryze and Djarin entered with Plazir-15's Commissioner Helgait in handcuffs.

Commissioner Helgait resented the changes that occurred on Plazir-15 after Bombardier's arrival.

They revealed that Helgait was responsible for the malfunctions, and he confessed to his crimes. Bombardier condemned Helgait as despicable, but the commissioner retorted that Plazir-15 had become unrecognizable since the captain's arrival. The Duchess expressed her disappointment in Helgait and defended Bombardier as her true love, despite his past mistakes. Hoping that the commissioner might one day earn forgiveness as the captain had, she exiled him to the moon of Paraqaat.

After Helgait was escorted away, the Duchess granted Kryze and Djarin an audience with the privateers and bestowed upon them both the planet's highest honor, the Key to Plazir. She then smiled at Bombardier, who nodded enthusiastically as she knighted Grogu as a member of the Ancient Order of Independent Regencies. The trio of visitors bid farewell to the royal couple and left to visit the privateers, where Kryze defeated Woves to claim leadership of the Mandalorians in her effort to reunite the Mandalorian people.

Equipment

Captain Bombardier wore military-style clothing.

Bombardier's attire was military-inspired, featuring a blue tunic and matching pants with a yellow stripe. He also wore a yellow cape, a black bandolier, his red Amnesty Program badge, and black shoes.

Behind the scenes

Jack Black played Captain Bombardier in "Chapter 22: Guns for Hire," the sixth episode of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian's third season, which premiered on April 5, 2023. Black mentioned on Instagram that he enjoyed working with Lizzo, who portrayed The Duchess. According to series creator Jon Favreau, they chose Black and Lizzo for the Alice in Wonderland-esque royal couple because both had expressed their fandom of the series, with Black even posting Mandalorian-related content on social media. Katee Sackhoff, who played Bo-Katan Kryze, found it challenging to maintain a serious demeanor around them on set and was relieved that her character eventually found them amusing in the episode.
