Imri Cantaros, a Jedi Knight affiliated with the Jedi Order, was a human male from Genetia during the High Republic. Born circa 246 BBY, this Genetian individual spent his formative years on both Genetia and Hynestia. Later, he became the apprentice of Jedi Master Douglas Sunvale. At one point, Cantaros found himself stationed on the transport ship known as the Steady Wing, working alongside fellow Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh. The Nihil marauders Gwishi and Klinith Da sabotaged the vessel, forcing Cantaros, along with Honesty Weft, Avon Starros, and J-6, to flee in a shuttle just as the Steady Wing was destroyed. The explosion resulted in Master Sunvale's death, and the survivors eventually found themselves marooned on the jungle moon called Wevo.
While stranded on Wevo, anger began to consume him because of his master's passing, directed at the pirates. This anger reached a boiling point when he discovered the pirates were also stranded there. Disobeying Vernestra's strategic orders, he went against the group. After their failed ambush, he and Weft were captured by the pirates, but Vernestra later rescued them. When Vernestra's life was threatened, Cantaros intervened, using a Force choke on Da. Vernestra gave a warning to Cantaros about the dangers of the Dark side of the Force, but Cantaros, fueled by revenge, even briefly dueled Vernestra before regaining his composure and recognizing his mistake.
When the Trandoshan Jedi Master Sskeer rescued them, Cantaros felt disappointed in his lack of self-control and worried about being expelled from the Jedi Order. However, at the dedication ceremony for the new Starlight Beacon, Vernestra announced that she would become his new master, promising to guide his growth in the Force. Cantaros was overjoyed, shedding tears of happiness and vowing not to disappoint her, with his new master reciprocating her confidence in him.
After the events on Wevo, Cantaros and his master, at the request of Master Avar Kriss, conducted an autopsy on Starlight Beacon. The subject was a Hutt trader who had been slain by Nihil raiders while transporting Vratixian barley on their starship.
Cantaros was on Starlight Beacon when it suffered destruction and was presumed dead by Rwoh. However, he lived and later reunited with Rwoh.

Cantaros was a young man of considerable height and build, sporting short golden hair. He initially wielded a blue lightsaber, but after its destruction, he constructed a new lightsaber. Known for his kindness and caring nature, he offered comfort to Weft after the loss of his father on the Steady Wing and showed friendliness towards the eccentric Starros. He felt envious of Vernestra's rapid advancement to the rank of Jedi Knight and hoped the Force would reveal his own important role within the Jedi Order. He also felt jealousy towards Vernestra's lightsaber because of his own difficulties with his weapon. As a Genetian, he possessed strong empathic abilities, capable of detecting even subtle shifts in the moods of those around him. This sensitivity could become overwhelming when surrounded by large groups of people. Cantaros also had the ability to influence the emotions of others, a power that concerned Rwoh, as demonstrated when he 'dulled' Silas' jealousy and annoyance.
Imri Cantaros was introduced concurrently in the 2021 novels The High Republic: Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule and the junior novel The High Republic: A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland.
In chapter four of A Test of Courage, Cantaros is stated to be from Genetia, while chapter eighteen indicates he is from Hynestia. Ireland later addressed this discrepancy on Twitter, suggesting that Cantaros' parents may have originated from different planets. This explanation was later confirmed in Ireland's novel, The High Republic: Out of the Shadows.
Chapter one of Into The Dark mentions that Reath Silas was looking forward to seeing Imri again. However, in chapter two of Out of the Shadows, Vernestra asks Reath if he has met Imri, and he replies that he has not. The reason for this inconsistency remains unexplained.
