Plot summary

Poe makes the decision to jump to hyperspace in the Outer Rim's Kaddak system because he cannot get in touch with Oddy Muva, another Resistance agent. C-3PO and N1-ZX are secured within specialized compartments of Black One, his T-70 X-wing starfighter. Meanwhile, Terex's ship, the Carrion Spike, leads a squadron of "Ugly" starfighters as they chase after Poe. Oddy Muva sneaks onto the Carrion Spike and eavesdrops on a conversation between Terex and Zumgi, a gangster from the Ranc. On the bridge, Terex learns that his forces are tracking Dameron's X-wing. He gives the order to ready the fleet and notify him when they exit realspace. Terex intends to use the Ranc Gang because he feels restricted by the First Order's structured hierarchy.

Terex communicates via hologram in his personal quarters with Captain Phasma, who expresses her disapproval of his association with criminals and commands him to abandon his pursuit of Dameron. Terex disregards her orders and terminates the transmission. Afterwards, Sowa Chuan, an Abednedo slave, attends to Terex, but she is revealed to be Oddy Muva's spouse. Elsewhere in hyperspace, Poe, C-3PO, and BB-8 deliberate on how Terex has managed to track his movements. After considering the sequence of events, Poe deduces that Oddy Muva is the spy.

Oddy Muva confronts Zumgi, Terex's subordinate, aboard the Carrion Spike. After a short scuffle, he disarms Zumgi of his vibroblade and coerces him to lead him to his wife. Meanwhile, Poe Dameron exits hyperspace and confronts N1-ZX. He informs the BX-series droid commando that he believes the information it carries is a ruse by Terex to ensnare the Resistance. At that moment, Terex's fleet appears from hyperspace. Terex realizes that Poe has uncovered his scheme and has arrived in uncharted territory rather than the Resistance base. Terex instructs the Ranc Gang to pursue and eliminate Poe.

BB-8 attempts to compute new hyperspace coordinates as Poe engages the "Uglies" in aerial combat. After destroying several "Uglies," Poe's X-wing sustains damage from enemy fire and crash lands on an desert planet.
