Duel on Ambria (980 BBY)

In the year 980 BBY, a deadly showdown unfolded on the planet of Ambria. This confrontation pitted the Sith Master Darth Bane against his own apprentice, Darth Zannah. Bane's growing suspicion was that Zannah intended to wait for his decline before challenging him, a direct contradiction of his Rule of Two which dictated the apprentice must earn the title of Master through superior strength. Consequently, Bane sought the key to immortality, hoping to extend his life and train another apprentice. Meanwhile, Zannah, having decided to confront Bane and claim the title of Master, perceived his quest for eternal life as a betrayal of the Sith Order. She located and confronted him on Doan, but their duel ended inconclusively. Following this, Bane acquired a new apprentice, the Iktotchi Darth Cognus, and invited Zannah to Ambria for a final confrontation. Upon Zannah's arrival, Cognus pledged her service to the victor of the impending battle, the one she deemed the true master.

The battle commenced, with Bane immediately seizing the advantage, swiftly pushing Zannah onto the defensive. As she prepared to cast a spell, she stumbled, allowing Bane to fracture her rib before she could execute an energy-draining escape. Zannah then futilely attempted to use sorcery to shatter his sanity. Ultimately, she resorted to summoning dark side tendrils from the ground. Bane charged, aiming to strike her down before the tendrils could reach him, but one connected with his arm, severing it. Collapsing in agony, Bane seized Zannah and attempted to transfer his essence into her body, a technique he had learned in his pursuit of eternal life. However, her will proved too strong. After a fierce mental struggle, she triumphed, obliterating his consciousness, though a fragment of Bane remained imprinted within her. Zannah then assumed the title of Dark Lord of the Sith, continuing the legacy of Bane's Sith Order and the Rule of Two, with Cognus as her apprentice.

Background

Prakith and Doan

In the era of 1000 BBY, Darth Bane, the Dark Lord of the Sith, established a novel Sith Order grounded in the Rule of Two. This principle stipulated that only two Sith could exist at any given time: a Master and an apprentice. The Rule was designed to ensure that an apprentice could only claim the title of Master by defeating their predecessor in combat, proving their superior strength and worthiness. However, by 980 BBY, Bane grew concerned that Darth Zannah, his apprentice of twenty years, was simply waiting for his deteriorating health to worsen before challenging him for the title of Dark Lord. This led him to embark on a mission to Prakith in pursuit of Darth Andeddu's holocron, rumored to contain the secret to eternal life, hoping to prolong his existence and train a more deserving apprentice. He successfully acquired the holocron and learned the technique of essence transfer, a ritual enabling the transfer of one's consciousness into another's body.

Despite Bane's anxieties, Zannah had begun plotting to overthrow her Master. During a mission to the planet Doan, she discovered a Dark Jedi named Set Harth, whom she tracked down and enlisted as her apprentice in preparation for her challenge against Bane. Meanwhile, Princess Serra of Doan discovered that her father had been killed by a Sith Lord ten years previously. Believing Darth Bane to be the culprit—who had threatened Serra's life during the New Sith Wars if her father did not heal him—she hired the Huntress, an Iktotchi assassin, to capture Bane and bring him to her. The Huntress, accompanied by approximately twenty mercenaries, ambushed Bane in his mansion on Ciutric IV upon his return from Prakith. They captured him and transported him to the Stone Prison on Doan, where Serra interrogated him.

Confrontation on Doan

Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Bane

Upon returning to Ciutric IV with Harth and learning of Bane's quest for immortality, Zannah was enraged, viewing it as a betrayal of their Order. She and Harth tracked Bane to Doan, intending to free him and issue her challenge. However, Serra's bodyguard, who had served alongside Bane during the New Sith Wars, had already liberated the Sith Lord. Bane began hunting Serra within the prison, but Zannah found and confronted him. She attacked Bane, who was unarmed since the Huntress had confiscated his lightsaber after his capture. Serra witnessed their conflict and decided to initiate the self-destruct sequence of the prison and escape. Using the Force, Bane fended off Zannah long enough to detonate a wall-mounted detonator with his Force lightning, causing the passage to collapse between them, ending the duel.

Zannah discovered that Harth had fled during her battle with Bane, realizing her error in choosing him as her future apprentice. Meanwhile, Bane escaped the prison with the Huntress, who returned his lightsaber and offered herself as his student, adopting the name Darth Cognus. Aboard Cognus' shuttle, the Stalker, they utilized the Iktotchi's precognition to locate Serra on the planet Ambria, where Bane allowed his new apprentice to eliminate the Princess. Bane then sent a distress signal to Zannah's starship, the Victory, revealing his location. Zannah correctly interpreted the message not as a trap, but as an invitation to Ambria to conclude their unfinished business from Doan.

The Decisive Battle

The duel for the future of the Sith

Upon Zannah's arrival at the camp, Cognus pledged her allegiance to the true Sith Master—whichever combatant emerged victorious—promising non-interference. Bane immediately attacked Zannah, overwhelming her with the intensity and force of his blows. He employed new techniques, ones never demonstrated during their training sessions. Despite this, her defenses held firm, and Bane soon adopted a strategy of feints and rapid strikes. As he continued to force her backward, Zannah began to gather her power, preparing to unleash her sorcery to swiftly end the duel. However, Bane circled to her left flank, and Zannah, distracted between Bane and her spell, failed to notice Serra's freshly dug grave behind her. She tripped and fell, and Bane immediately launched a series of furious attacks, kicking and stomping, breaking one of her ribs. Zannah absorbed the impact, regained her feet, and executed a series of back handsprings, culminating in a thrust intended to impale Bane. Bane, however, had retreated several meters, allowing her to exhaust herself with the unnecessary acrobatics.

Zannah quickly channeled the Force and attempted to overwhelm him with her sorcery, focusing on imprinting images of Bane's deepest fears into his mind, seeking to drive him mad. While initially effective, Bane had conquered his fears long ago. He mustered sufficient willpower to counter the spells with a surge of Force energy that sent Zannah reeling backward. As Zannah stood, Bane charged once more. Desperate to end the duel, Zannah tapped into the power of Ambria itself, summoning tendrils of pure dark side energy from the ground. She directed the tendrils at Bane, who attempted to evade them as he advanced.

One tendril grazed Bane's shoulder, causing him to collapse in agony, a pain surpassing any he had previously experienced. Rising once more, Bane charged Zannah, dodging the tendrils, realizing that his only chance was to strike her down before more tendrils hit him. As he came within range, he struck with his lightsaber, and Zannah, her attention divided between the tendrils and defending against Bane, barely deflected the blow—but her lightsaber was knocked from her hand. However, as Bane prepared the final, fatal blow, one of the tendrils severed his sword arm. Bane fell to the ground in pain, and, realizing he had no other option, he grabbed Zannah's wrist and initiated the ritual of essence transfer.

Bane's physical form was instantly destroyed, reduced to ash as his consciousness transferred into Zannah's body. However, he could still sense her consciousness within, and she fought back. They engaged in a battle of wills, Bane attempting to obliterate her identity, while she sought to expel him from her body. They were evenly matched for a moment, but Zannah ultimately prevailed, banishing his consciousness from within. Nevertheless, a fragment of Bane remained imprinted upon Zannah.

The Result

Bane's successor, Darth Zannah

Cognus, who had observed the duel, cautiously approached Zannah, who rose, moving awkwardly. Cognus inquired if it was Bane, but Zannah replied that Bane was gone; she had defeated him and become the new Dark Lord of the Sith. Zannah accepted Cognus as her apprentice, giving her Bane's old lightsaber until the Iktotchi could construct her own. She declared that they would continue Bane's legacy, and while individuals within the Order might perish, the Order itself would endure forever.

Bane's Order of the Sith Lords and the Rule of Two persisted for over a millennium, and in 19 BBY, Darth Sidious finally achieved the ambition of galactic dominance with the establishment of the Galactic Empire. However, following the deaths of Darth Sidious and Darth Vader in 4 ABY, Bane's Order was reformed into a new order by Lumiya, the self-proclaimed Dark Lady of the Sith, who continued to adhere to the Rule of Two. Finally, in 41 ABY, Darth Caedus was killed and his apprentice, Tahiri Veila, redeemed, thus extinguishing the last remnants of Bane's Order.

Production Notes

Author Drew Karpyshyn conceived this duel as the climax and concluding confrontation of the final novel in the Darth Bane Trilogy, Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil, released on December 8, 2009. The event served to eliminate the trilogy's title character, bringing Darth Bane's life cycle to its end. Karpyshyn knew that regardless of the victor, readers would be upset by the death of a beloved character, but he chose not to avoid the issue or "take the easy way out" with an ambiguous ending.

The novel's conclusion sparked considerable fan speculation about whether Bane had successfully taken control of Zannah's body, concealing this from Cognus—some even theorized that Bane continued this pattern of body snatching through Darth Sidious. However, Karpyshyn clarified on his website that this was not his intention. He confirmed that Zannah had won the battle of wills, and Bane had only managed to imprint a portion of his identity onto her. The extent of Bane's imprint on Zannah was the intended ambiguity.
