Shaef Corssin

A highly skilled and intensely focused officer within the Imperial Navy of the Galactic Empire was the human named Shaef Corssin. He held the position of captain aboard the _Imperial I_-class Star Destroyer Devastator, which served as the flagship for the Sith Lord Darth Vader. During the events of 1 BBY, the Devastator materialized above the planet Scarif, coinciding with an attempt by forces of the Alliance to Restore the Republic to escape with the stolen plans for the Death Star superweapon. After the Devastator successfully disabled the enemy flagship, Corssin relayed this information to Vader, who then instructed him to assemble a boarding party. Despite these efforts, a segment of the rebels managed to flee with the crucial Death Star schematics.

Biography

The Battle of Scarif

Under Corssin's command, the Devastator arrived at Scarif.

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, Shaef Corssin, a human, was an officer within the ranks of the Imperial Navy. He was the captain of the Devastator, an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer that functioned as the flagship for the Sith Lord Darth Vader. In 1 BBY, the Alliance to Restore the Republic launched an attack against Imperial personnel stationed at Citadel Tower on the planet Scarif with the objective of acquiring the plans for the Death Star superweapon. Once these plans were transmitted to the Alliance Fleet that was engaged with Imperial forces in orbit, Admiral Raddus issued the order for a retreat via a jump to hyperspace.

As the ships initiated their jumps, the Devastator emerged from hyperspace above Scarif, leading to collisions between several smaller Alliance ships and the Star Destroyer, resulting in their destruction against its hull. Subsequently, the Imperial vessel opened fire on Raddus's ship, the MC75 Star Cruiser named Profundity, successfully disabling it and preventing its escape. Corssin then approached Vader on the Devastator's bridge to inform him that the enemy flagship was crippled, while also noting the transmission it had received.

Shaef Corssin commanded the flagship of Darth Vader.

The Sith Lord instructed Corssin to assemble a boarding party before departing from the bridge to join the team in an attempt to retrieve the Death Star plans. However, a small contingent of rebels ultimately succeeded in escaping with the plans aboard the CR90 corvette Tantive IV. The Devastator then pursued the corvette, eventually capturing it above the planet Tatooine before returning to the Death Star.

Post Scarif

Corssin was considered to have greater military skill than Gorin.

In the days and weeks that followed the Imperial setbacks at Scarif, intense discussions arose within the Imperial Military regarding the extent to which Admiral Gorin, the commander of the Scarif fleet, was responsible. Those who placed blame on Gorin highlighted the success of Corssin and Vader in disabling the Profundity, a feat that the admiral had failed to achieve, as evidence of Gorin's failings.

By the time of the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, Corssin was no longer in command of the Devastator, with Admiral Jhared Montferrat serving as its captain during that engagement. Later, in 35 ABY, the historian Beaumont Kin referenced Corssin while discussing the debate surrounding Gorin in his book titled The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire.

Personality and traits

Corssin was an effective and intensely dedicated Imperial officer who spoke with precision when addressing Vader on the Devastator's bridge. He possessed fair skin, gray eyes, and blond hair.

Skills and abilities

Members of the Imperial Military who believed Gorin was responsible for the failures at Scarif asserted that Corssin possessed superior military capabilities compared to the admiral.

Equipment

During the Battle of Scarif, Corssin wore black gloves and a standard gray Imperial officer's uniform that included a cap, an officer's disk, and another disk on the buckle of his black belt. On his breast, he wore three code cylinders alongside a rank insignia plaque that showed three red squares and two blue.

Behind the scenes

Shaef Corssin was given abbreviated dialogue and depicted with gray hair in Star Wars: Rogue One Graphic Novel Adaptation.

Shaef Corssin made his debut in both the 2016 Star Wars Anthology film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Alexander Freed's novelization of the film, which were released concurrently. Michael Shaeffer portrayed Corssin in the film, credited as "General Corssin." The character received the first name of Shaef, derived from a portion of the actor's surname, in the companion reference book Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide, authored by Pablo Hidalgo. This reference book also identified the character as a captain rather than a general. Given that Corssin is depicted as a naval officer in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, this article assumes that his correct rank is captain.

The 2017 graphic novel adaptation of Rogue One, written by Alessandro Ferrari, slightly condenses Corssin's dialogue and inaccurately portrays him with gray hair. An unnamed captain of the Devastator, described as an older individual, appears in A New Hope: The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy, a 2015 novelization by Alexandra Bracken of the 1977 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, the character Mulchive Wermis occupied this role during the events of A New Hope.
