Sith Intelligence

Sith Intelligence arose as the replacement for the Imperial Intelligence division of the Sith Empire.

History

The Dark Council seized the opportunity presented by the near destruction of Imperial Intelligence at the hands of the Star Cabal during the Galactic War to permanently dismantle the weakened group. They intended to establish a novel Sith Intelligence agency to serve as the Sith Empire's revitalized intelligence service, superseding the old department. Unlike its antecedent, which enjoyed some autonomy from its Sith superiors, Sith Intelligence was designed to be directly supervised by the Sith themselves.

Following a conflict on the moon of Yavin 4 against the Revanites, Darth Marr appointed Lana Beniko as the head of Sith Intelligence.

Sith Intelligence relocated its operations to Ziost, where the former Sith Emperor, Vitiate, began to dominate the minds of combatants on both sides during the Republic's invasion of the world. The organization subsequently fell into disarray after Vitiate consumed all life on the planet. Minister Beniko intended to rebuild Sith Intelligence by making their operations mobile. However, any headway made was undone by the turmoil that followed the unexpected Eternal Empire's assault on the galaxy.

By 3631 BBY, Beniko had severed ties with Sith Intelligence but was aware that most of its resources had been destroyed in the previous battles with the Eternal Empire. She suspected that Empress Acina, who had since taken the reins of the Sith Empire, favored technological surveillance and was unsure whether any attempts had been made to reconstruct the organization.

Order of Zildrog campaign

Sith Intelligence defectors hijacked Vanguard Station (pictured) to attack outposts of the newly formed Eternal Alliance.

In the wake of the Eternal Empire's downfall and the establishment of the Eternal Alliance in 3630 BBY, a renegade group of Sith Intelligence defectors, under the leadership of Sith Lord Anril and former Imperial Intelligence cipher agent Major Korven, commandeered Vanguard Station and initiated attacks on vulnerable Alliance settlements. An elite Alliance strike force infiltrated the station, defeated the defectors' leaders, and halted their attacks. This event was one of five uprisings simultaneously targeting the newly formed Alliance, leading Alliance Intelligence to speculate that a single, unidentified party may have orchestrated the attacks. Soon after, when another five uprisings erupted against the Alliance, Alliance Intelligence verified that a single entity was responsible for initiating all the uprisings and considered Sith Intelligence as a potential suspect.

During the Battle of Iokath in 3629 BBY, Beniko voiced her concerns to the Alliance Commander that an unknown entity was behind the clash of Republic, Imperial, and Alliance forces converging at Iokath at the same time. Theron Shan, the Alliance operations leader and former Republic Strategic Information Service agent, suggested Sith Intelligence as a possible culprit. The true instigator was later identified as the Order of Zildrog.

Third Galactic War

During the Empire's invasion of Ossus in 3628 BBY, two Sith Intelligence operatives, both Nautolan females, reported to a Sith Lord on the condition of the planet's Jedi colony and offered advice on vulnerabilities to exploit.

In the year that followed, Sith Intelligence orchestrated the Nova Blades pirate gang to launch regular attacks on the Republic agricultural world of Dantooine. The planet served as a vital and heavily fortified staging ground for Republic incursions into Imperial territory. Darth Xarion enlisted the pirates to attack the planet from within Republic space. The incursion fostered a chaotic environment in which the Empire could secretly deploy a strike team to the planet and establish a clandestine base.

Following the Battle of Corellia months later, Sith Intelligence aimed to influence the Onderon government but needed thorough intelligence on the ruling class in Iziz, the planetary [capital](/article/capital-legends] city. By this point, spies and informants had proven to be valuable assets, but further surveillance was necessary. Consequently, Imperial heroes installed a half-dozen surveillance devices around Iziz's perimeter.

Behind the scenes

Sith Intelligence received its initial mention at the conclusion of the Imperial Agent class storyline in the BioWare-LucasArts video game Star Wars: The Old Republic in 2011. Irrespective of the player's choices, the former Minister of Intelligence informs Cipher Nine that the Dark Council intends to establish a new Sith Intelligence, rather than rebuild Imperial Intelligence. If the player hands over the Black Codex to the Dark Council, the Minister explains that there will be a place in the new intelligence agency for Cipher Nine, likely under the direction of individuals like him/her. If the player retains the Black Codex, they are given the choice to either use it to escape and operate as an invisible agent of the Empire, or to remain in the Empire and "make it a better place". Lastly, if the player opts to hand over the codex to Ardun Kothe, the Minister tells Cipher Nine that the Empire will probably view him/her as a renegade.

In addition, if the player is playing as an Imperial Agent in the Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion, Lana Beniko will reveal what she knows about the fate of Sith Intelligence soon after landing in the Endless Swamp.
