Tanquar

Tanquar, a Mon Calamari and the commanding officer of the Mon Calamari Rangers, played a pivotal role during the Second Imperial Civil War. With guidance and assistance from Imperial Knight Treis Sinde, Tanquar spearheaded a resistance movement on Dac against the attempted genocide of his people by the Galactic Empire led by Darth Krayt.

Biography

Leading the Rangers

Originating from Dac, Tanquar, a Mon Calamari, established the Mon Calamari Rangers to fight back against the genocide targeting his species, an act ordered by Emperor Darth Krayt and his Galactic Empire. Treis Sinde, an Imperial Knight loyal to the Empire-in-exile, joined the Rangers and aided them in waging a guerrilla campaign against the invading Imperial forces. Sinde proposed that the Rangers attempt to seize the Acklay-class mobile fortress known as the Sea Lion to utilize it as a mobile headquarters.

Piloting Krakana fighters, Tanquar, along with Sinde and the Rangers, shadowed the battle fortress, concealing themselves within the trenches of the ocean floor. However, just as they were about to execute their ambush, the Sea Lion launched an attack on a Mon Calamari refugee settlement, initiating a massacre of the inhabitants. Despite Sinde's desire to wait to surround and capture the vessel, Tanquar refused to sacrifice any Mon Calamari for the sake of an objective. Tanquar led the Rangers into battle against the fortress' Shark Squadron. While the Krakana fighters gradually pushed back the Imperials' Shark fighters, inflicting significant losses, Sinde exploited the distraction to board the Sea Lion and damage its docking bay. However, with the Rangers now out of position, the battle fortress managed to retreat from the battlefield.

Following the Imperials' defeat, the Rangers escorted the rescued refugees to their secret base, the Ranger Grotto. Tanquar felt a sense of pride and considered the outcome a victory, as the Rangers had driven off an Acklay and saved their people. Sinde disagreed and expressed frustration at their failure to capture the Imperial vessel. When the refugees inquired about their next destination, Tanquar initially agreed to allow them to stay at the base. However, Sinde objected, pointing out that they lacked sufficient supplies for the refugees, who could potentially jeopardize the Rangers' mission or reveal their location. The refugees concurred with Sinde, and a contingent of Tanquar's soldiers escorted the group to a safer location outside the base.

Leviathan

Tanquar overheard Sinde using a communications device, modified by the Mon Calamari Rangers, to communicate with his leader, the deposed Emperor Roan Fel. Fel instructed Sinde to return to Bastion, but Sinde argued that he should remain, as his actions with the Rangers might persuade the Mon Calamari to align with Fel's true Empire. After Fel asserted that the Mon Calamari had never been and would never be Imperials, Sinde reluctantly agreed to return to Bastion. Tanquar confronted Sinde about his decision to leave, accusing him of prioritizing his own people over the Mon Calamari.

Their discussion was interrupted by the return of the Ranger Shonmai, who brought news that a Sith-created Sea Leviathan was approaching. Tanquar ordered the Rangers to prepare for combat, but Sinde advised against it, explaining that the Sith were attempting to lure the Rangers out to destroy them. Sinde suggested that the best course of action for the greater good was to sacrifice the refugees that the Leviathan was targeting. Tanquar refused, denouncing it as an Imperial tactic, not a Mon Calamari one. After further consideration, Sinde proposed an alternative plan: the Rangers would attack the transport escorting the Leviathan, while he personally dealt with the creature. Tanquar was delighted that Sinde was still willing to help them, but expressed confusion as to why his Emperor had ordered him to leave. Sinde replied that he was assisting them because he considered Tanquar a friend, not because the Emperor demanded allies.

Tanquar led the Rangers into the battle. This time, they adhered to the plan and attacked the transport carrying Vul Isen and Darth Azard. Meanwhile, Sinde employed the Force to summon a school of Devilsquid and used them to overwhelm the Leviathan. Shonmai made the ultimate sacrifice, destroying the transport by ramming her fighter into it.

Following the battle, Sinde contacted Emperor Fel once more and received orders to return. However, Sinde exploited a loophole; with no available transportation off-world and Fel unable to provide a transport, it was impossible to comply with the command. Fel conceded that Treis could return when it became feasible. Tanquar was pleased that Sinde would remain as a friend to the Mon Calamari.

A new ally

Tanquar later accompanied Sinde to the surface so that he could meet with his former apprentice, Sigel Dare. Upon their meeting, Sinde informed Dare of his decision to remain with the Rangers, despite the Emperor's orders, leading Dare to view him as a traitor. The Togrutan Jedi Master Asaak Dan, who had accompanied Dare, intervened in the duel between the Imperial Knights and offered to stay with the Rangers in Sinde's place. Sinde accepted and bid farewell to Tanquar before departing.

The evacuation of Dac

Three days after the implementation of the Final Protocol, which would eradicate all life on Dac within seven days, Tanquar, Master Dan, and the remaining Rangers seized Heurkea as a secure evacuation point for the Galactic Alliance Remnant and numerous volunteer ships. As the final available shuttle prepared for departure, Tanquar insisted on staying with those who could not be saved. However, Asaak Dan reminded Tanquar that such personal sentiments must be set aside; the leaders of the Mon Calamari, including Tanquar, had a responsibility to survive and guide the remaining survivors. Tanquar reluctantly agreed to evacuate.

Behind the scenes

Tanquar's first appearance was in the 2009 issue thirty-two of Star Wars: Legacy, which was the first part of the story arc titled Fight Another Day.
