The conflict known as the Battle of Hanoon saw the Galactic Empire clash with the New Republic amidst the broader Krantian Civil War. This battle ended with the total annihilation of the ancient and powerful artifact called Vor'Na'Tu, alongside the freeing of the asteroid named Hanoon.
Many years passed after Echuu Shen-Jon, a Jedi, shattered the ancient and powerful artifact Vor'Na'Tu and met his death on Geddes. He then reached out to Leia Organa through the Force, cautioning her about the latent power within the shards. In the intervening years, the asteroid underwent terraforming, becoming the colony world Hanoon, where colonists discovered and revered the shards as relics within their cities. Simultaneously, Moff Yittreas sought refuge from the Krantian Civil War on Geddes, establishing fortifications on the asteroid. Consequently, Organa and her brother Luke Skywalker, who would later found the New Jedi Order, journeyed to Hanoon in 6 ABY to locate these scattered fragments.

A strike team of the New Republic, commanded by Organa and Skywalker, made their way back to the asteroid to secure the shards. Their forces included nine troopers, a single Mobile Proton Torpedo Launcher, and one Blaster Cannon.
Their first stop was the settlement of Reticul, where the locals agreed to surrender their shard, but only after the destruction of the Imperial laser turrets encircling the town. The Republic forces deployed the Blaster Cannon, successfully neutralizing the turrets. In gratitude, Reticul handed over their shard along with several R2-D5 labor droids. These droids were then utilized by the Republic to construct their own base, featuring a Jedi Temple intended to house the recovered shards. The nearby Imperial base was also eliminated by the strike force.
Next, the strike force went to Libreck, where Excellency Lathe Parthenian, a leader within the Hanoon Imperial Resistance, was being held captive. Upon Parthenian's liberation and the elimination of the resident stormtrooper garrison, Libreck relinquished its shard. The settlement of Magentic gave up their shard after the Republic strike force reduced the Fortress guarding the town to rubble. Reeche, on the other hand, demanded and received a payment of 500 units each of carbon and nova crystals in return for their shard. Skywalker then brought the four shards back to the Temple for safekeeping.

Skywalker and Organa then made the decision to remain on the asteroid and liberate it, despite the high risk involved. They assembled a force consisting of a Blaster Cannon, two Heavy Attack Tanks, a Heavy Torpedo Launcher, nine Repeater Troopers, and a Transport Ship containing five labor droids. Their target was New Geddes, the city that had grown around the original research facility, with the goal of seizing the Terraform Processor. The Blaster Cannon moved ahead, taking out four turrets to protect the Transport Ship, which had become trapped in the canal. The defenders of New Geddes, seasoned veterans from Krant, put up a strong fight, but the Republic strike force managed to infiltrate the base, and the labor droids secured control of the Terraform Processor.
The strike force then strengthened their defenses to maintain control of the Processor and recruited reinforcements for a deeper push into New Geddes. The army fought through the Imperial defenses, including air defense towers. They destroyed one Fortress, but Moff Yittreas managed to escape to another. Eventually, they cornered him and his forces in another Fortress, where they were defeated.
The survivors then attempted to break into the Jedi Temple to seize the shards. Skywalker, sensing the disturbance in the Force, returned to the Temple and utterly destroyed the remnants of the Vor'Na'Tu, scattering its dust into space.

Following the battle, Hanoon became a member of the New Republic. The spirit of Shen-Jon never contacted Organa again.
The Battle of Hanoon was initially mentioned in the strategy guide for the 2001 video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. It was featured in two consecutive missions of the Princess Leia campaign. These missions, and consequently the battle itself, were also included in the game's 2002 expansion, Clone Campaigns.
This article assumes that players prioritized Reticul during the first mission, due to its proximity, and utilized the Blaster Cannon to eliminate the turrets, as suggested in the strategy guide. While players have the freedom to construct any structure within the base, building a Jedi Temple is essential for storing the four shards after retrieving them from Reticul, Magentic, Libreck, and Reeche. The objectives can be completed in any sequence. The optional objective of destroying the Imperial base is also assumed to have been completed. For the second mission, the player is free to develop any type of army as long as the Imperial base is destroyed and the Terraform Processor is protected.
There are conflicting dates regarding the battle. Yittreas' Galactic Battlegrounds DataBank entry stated that the Krantian Civil War lasted for a decade, a detail later contradicted by The Essential Atlas, which places the battle in 6 ABY. This article adheres to the latter source. Furthermore, the 2005 book The New Essential Chronology sets the beginning of the Civil War around 0 ABY.
