Crag

Crag, a male human clone, served the Galactic Empire as a sandtrooper in Foot Patrol 7. Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin dispatched Crag to Tatooine, where he and his unit were tasked with locating two missing Rebel Alliance droids, namely R2-D2 and C-3PO. Their search led them to the Mos Eisley spaceport, where they discovered a landspeeder carrying the droids. However, the passengers managed to escape when the old man in the landspeeder employed a mind trick on the troopers.

When the droids and their allies attempted to leave the planet from Docking Bay 94, Crag and Foot Patrol 7 were alerted. Crag led the charge to the hangar, but they were unable to prevent the droids' escape. The droids fled Tatooine aboard a ship after a skirmish involving another sandtrooper unit within the hangar.

Biography

Dispatched

Crag and his unit were deployed to Tatooine to search for two droids.

Cloned on the planet of Kamino, Crag originated from the genetic material of the bounty hunter Jango Fett. In 0 BBY, Imperial Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin assigned him to the Galactic Empire's Foot Patrol 7 as a sandtrooper. His comrades included Sardis Ramsin, TD-787, Tintop, and their commander, Wanten. Their mission on the desert planet Tatooine was to retrieve R2-D2 and C-3PO, two droids associated with the Rebel Alliance, who possessed the plans for the Death Star battle station.

While based at the Imperial barracks just outside the Mos Eisley spaceport, Crag witnessed a dispute between Tintop and TD-787. Tintop had added something to TD-787's food that caused him to have gas. Crag intervened, explaining the origin of the name "stormtroopers," to which Tintop joked that it came from their helmets resembling buckets. Crag corrected him, stating that the name originated from "the storm of history," a point reinforced by Wanten, who added that they were "born in the storm." Crag emphasized that their unit's purpose was to maintain order throughout the galaxy. Wanten then announced their assignment to find the droids in Mos Eisley.

Crag and the rest of Foot Patrol 7 confront a boy and an old man.

Upon their arrival in Mos Eisley, Foot Patrol 7 began patrolling the spaceport, searching for the droids. They stopped a landspeeder occupied by a boy, an old man, and the two droids. Wanten requested identification from the passengers but ultimately allowed them to proceed. Unbeknownst to the troopers, the passengers were Luke Skywalker and the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, who had used a mind trick to deceive the entire unit, enabling their escape.

Following this incident, Crag and Foot Patrol 7 took a break for drinks at Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina. As they resumed their search, Commander TD-4445 contacted them, informing them that the droids and their allies were preparing to leave Tatooine aboard a ship they had chartered. The commander ordered all available units to Docking Bay 94, based on information received from their spy, Garindan ezz Zavor. Crag led Foot Patrol 7 to the hangar, but they arrived too late to stop the ship from departing after a brief exchange of blaster fire with another group of sandtroopers. The unit then went back to the streets of Mos Eisley. Later, Ramsin documented the events experienced by Foot Patrol 7 in an Imperial report.

Personality and traits

Crag, as an experienced male clone, possessed a strong sense of duty. He often reminded his team of their purpose to maintain order in the galaxy. His words commanded respect and attention from his fellow troopers. However, his personality irritated Ramsin, who sarcastically referred to him as a "relic" in his report. Like other clones of Jango Fett, Crag's height was 1.83 meters (6 feet.

Equipment

Like all clones, Crag was implanted at birth with a behavioral modification biochip by Kaminoan scientists. This chip ensured compliance with specific orders. Crag's sandtrooper armor included cooling fans, a helmet sand filter, and a black SD-48 survival backpack containing extra rations and water. He was armed with an E-11 medium blaster rifle, like the other members of Foot Patrol 7.

Behind the scenes

Crag's initial appearance was as an unnamed stormtrooper in the 1977 film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, part of the original trilogy. The character was played by an uncredited actor. His identity was revealed in the 2017 short story "Born in the Storm," by Daniel José Older, featured in From a Certain Point of View, a collection of short stories by various authors. However, the story does not specify which of the four troopers in A New Hope without spoken dialogue in Foot Patrol 7 is Crag.

The actors portraying Foot Patrol 7 filmed their scene with Kenobi and Luke between April 2 and April 3, 1976 in Ajim, Tunisia. The scene originally included six troopers, but the final version of the film only shows five. Foot Patrol 7 also appears in Star Wars: The Original Trilogy – A Graphic Novel; however, the graphic novel depicts only three sandtroopers with light-colored backpacks during the encounter with Kenobi, in contrast to the five troopers with black backpacks seen in the film.
