Garindan ezz Zavor

Garindan ezz Zavor, sometimes known as Long Snoot, was a male Kubaz who had been compelled to serve as an intelligence operative for the Galactic Empire. Secretly, Garindan despised his Imperial masters and yearned to go back to his clan and liberate his home planet of Kubindi from Imperial rule. In the time leading up to the Battle of Yavin, Garindan was informed that his family was in peril. Seeking to secure passage back home, Garindan divulged the whereabouts of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, and R2-D2 to the Galactic Empire during a battle on the desert world of Tatooine. Despite the failure of that endeavor, Garindan took on another assignment to assist Derrida the Ketton in spying on the Rebel Alliance.

Biography

The Reluctant Intelligence Operative

Born on the planet Kubindi, Garindan ezz Zavor hailed from a respected Kubaz clan renowned for cultivating a highly prized variety of succulent picolet beetles. He had a wife and several children who were prominent senators, orators, and artists. Garindan also had at least one daughter. Numerous grandchildren of his were also attending various learning institutions.

Garindan was able to escape his Imperial indoctrination, but used his training to earn credits.

During the Imperial Era, the Galactic Empire deployed refined protocol droids to sway Kubaz elders and entice the population into the heart of their massive organization. Garindan was among the select students chosen from his academy to study under the Empire as a diplomat and return to his family with new honors. However, Garindan and his peers were instead enslaved and forcibly trained as spies. The Empire sought to exploit the Kubaz for their skills in deciphering body languages, detecting pheromones and weapons, and hearing sounds from great distances. Garindan and the other students were shackled and subjected to propaganda, indoctrination, and brainwashing.

Growing disillusioned with the Empire, Garindan managed to escape during an assignment and attempted to return to Kubindi, only to discover its orbit guarded by Imperial warships. Unable to return to his homeworld, Garindan spent the subsequent years working as a spy to accumulate the necessary credits to charter a ship back to Kubindi. Garindan also amassed a datapad containing the latest information, schematics, and manuals on advanced technology and hyperspace travel. Garindan was determined to expose the truth of the Empire's "exploitation" to his people and equip them with the technology needed to assert their right to self-determination.

Assignment on Tatooine

In the early years of the Galactic Civil War, Garindan was stationed in the port city of Mos Eisley on the desert planet of Tatooine. Garindan resided in a dilapidated dwelling that had previously served as a livestock pen. He detested Tatooine, viewing it as a desolate world devoid of arts, decorum, and education. Garindan faced xenophobic animosity from the local human population, who considered him an unscrupulous spy. On one occasion, Garindan pilfered a leather bag of credits from a human man who had insulted him.

Garindan informing a stormtrooper of his sightings

Around the time of Princess Leia Organa's secret mission to Tatooine, Garindan received a distorted communication from Kubindi. Having not heard his own language in years, Garindan paid the robed female emissary all the money in his account. Garindan learned from his daughter that his wife was dead and that the family was in trouble. With his family in danger, Garindan resolved to take on a job and earn enough money to hire a ship to return to Kubindi.

Leveraging his intelligence network, Garindan arranged for his human informant to provide the codes that he needed to return home. The informant told Garindan that the codes would last for a few days and advised him not to hire a rebel ship. Embarking on his mission to get home, Garindan accepted a job from the Empire to search for two droids, C-3PO and R2-D2, who had escaped from Imperial forces during a battle in orbit. The search was primarily to find the stolen plans for the Death Star, which R2-D2 was carrying for the Rebel Alliance. The droids were under the protection of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker.

Garindan waited in Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina listening for any chatter related to the fugitive droids. He smelled the scent of Skywalker's X-34 landspeeder. Garindan overheard Ponda Baba and Cornelius Evazan fighting with Kenobi with the former losing his arm to Kenobi's lightsaber. Garindan also overheard Kenobi and Skywalker negotiating passage to Alderaan with the ship's captain, Han Solo, and its co-pilot, Chewbacca. While waiting in the dark corner between the cantina and Solo's starship, the Millennium Falcon, in Docking Bay 94, Garindan caught sight of the men walking with the two fugitive droids.

The Kubaz promptly informed Imperial stormtroopers that the droids were at Docking Bay 94 in Mos Eisley's spaceport. Confident that he would be paid for his work, Garindan ordered a second drink at Chalmn's Cantina and conversed with the Devaronian Labria. Garindan was dismayed when he received a message on his datapad that the bounty had been forfeited since the droids had escaped. However, Labria then offered Garindan a job on behalf of Derrida the Ketton, who needed a companion for a job that night. Labria explained that this job was against the Alliance. Determined to help his family and liberate the Kubaz from Imperial rule, Garindan accepted the job. When Labria complimented Garindan's skills as a spy and asked about his motives, Garindan merely replied that he was "very far from home."

Personality and traits

Garindan worked as a spy on Tatooine

Garindan ezz Zavor was a Kubaz of the male gender. During his work as a spy on Tatooine, he typically wore a long black robe and hood. Goggles shielded Garindan's eyes, and a metallic contraption covered his elongated snout. Initially, during the Imperial Era, Garindan was optimistic about the Galactic Empire and hoped to train as a diplomat. However, his positive view diminished when he and his fellow Kubaz were forced into espionage. Consequently, Garindan developed a profound animosity towards the Empire and sought to liberate his people from their dominion.

Garindan was a member of a respected clan and had a wife, children, and grandchildren. He deeply loved and missed his family. He despised his assignment on Tatooine, considering it a desolate place devoid of culture and refinement. Garindan faced significant hostility from the local human population, who saw him as an unscrupulous spy and an alien outsider. In return, Garindan held a negative view of humans, the galaxy's dominant species. He considered them arrogant and overly confident in their position within the galaxy. Garindan's devotion to his family drove him to accept any assignment, including spying on the Alliance.

Skills and abilities

Being a Kubaz, Garindan possessed the ability to interpret body language, detect pheromones and weapons, and hear distant conversations. He was also attuned to the pheromones secreted by people and animals, enabling him to perceive their thoughts and emotions. Garindan was fluent in both his native Kubazian and Galactic Basic Standard. He managed a vast intelligence network and was highly proficient in his field, working as a spy, once assuring a client that he could locate their target as long as he was paid.

Behind the scenes

Garindan was portrayed by Sadie Eddon in A New Hope. According to Star Wars Insider 110, his voice was a modified version of John Wayne's voice.

Garindan appeared in various Star Wars Legends works, including Daniel Keys Moran's 1995 short story "Empire Blues: The Devaronian's Tale," featured in the anthology Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina. Garindan's backstory was further expanded in Delilah S. Dawson's "The Secrets of Long Snoot," published in the 2017 anthology From a Certain Point of View. Dawson presented a more sympathetic view of the character's motivations, portraying him as a victim of the Empire rather than an opportunistic spy. However, this contradicts the digital card game Star Wars: Force Collection, where Garindan's card described him as greedy and hired by the Empire to spy on Solo's friends, rather than being forced into it.
