Imperial Depot (Barton IV)

An Imperial Depot, which the members of Mayday's squad referred to as "The Outpost," was constructed on a mountain located on the planet of Barton IV. In the early years of the Imperial era, Lieutenant Nolan, CT-9904 known as "Crosshair," in addition to a minimum of three clone troopers, were assigned a mission with the objective of retrieving crates of significant value from local raiders.

Upon their arrival, the squad faced an assault from local raiders, which led Nolan to instruct Crosshair and Mayday, the clone commander leading the squad previously stationed at the depot before Nolan's arrival, to secure two cargo crates that had been pilfered during the raiders' attack. Crosshair and Mayday successfully tracked down and neutralized the insurgents; however, they were unable to recover the two cargo crates. They found that the crates held TK stormtrooper gear. Upon the clones' return to the outpost, Nolan denied Mayday medical assistance for his injuries, which ultimately resulted in Mayday's death. This enraged Crosshair, prompting him to fatally shoot Nolan. Subsequently, Crosshair was taken into custody and sent to Doctor Emerie Karr for observation.

The Empire subsequently abandoned The Outpost. Later, Clone Force 99 journeyed back to Barton IV with the purpose of decrypting Nala Se’s datapad, which Omega had absconded with during her imprisonment at Tantiss Base situated on the planet Wayland.

Description

The depot, situated on the planet Barton IV, comprised several temporary, prefabricated structures. One of these buildings housed the high-value cargo crates containing TK stormtrooper gear. Sensor beacons encircled these structures to aid in detecting any unauthorized individuals. The depot also included at least one watchtower. However, as time passed, the planet's severe, snowy conditions caused much of the depot's equipment to deteriorate. Consequently, the sensors frequently failed to detect intruders, leading to recurring raids. Mayday's squad later gave the depot the nickname "The Outpost."

By the time Lieutenant Nolan and his group of troops reached the depot, the heating system in the prefabricated building that stored the cargo crates had also failed. The building contained only one heater, which Mayday's squad used to stay warm. The prefabricated building that housed the cargo crates had a large blast door and several clone trooper helmets placed on top of several crates as a memorial to clone troopers who had died defending the depot. By this point, black ice vultures were circling the complex.

History

Operation

During the early Imperial Era, Clone Commander Mayday and his squad received the assignment of safeguarding the depot at all costs. However, over time, the depot's equipment began to malfunction, leading to repeated raids. These raids resulted in the deaths of the majority of Mayday's squad. When Mayday requested replacement gear and additional clone troopers from the Galactic Empire, his request was denied.

Reinforcements

More than a year later, Mayday, Hexx, and Veetch were the only three clones who had survived at The Outpost. CT-9904 "Crosshair" and at least three clone troopers were assigned alongside Lieutenant Nolan to travel to Barton-4 and secure high-value cargo at the depot. Upon Nolan and his squad's arrival, they discovered that the depot was unguarded. After Nolan learned about the events that had transpired at the outpost before their arrival, he declared that the remaining clones would face punishment for their failure to adequately defend the outpost.

Clone Commander Mayday then scoffed and inquired about the number of missions Nolan had commanded. Mayday then asked the clone troopers still under his command to assist their new commander in "getting situated" while Mayday showed Crosshair the depot. Crosshair questioned Mayday about the local raiders attacking the depot, to which Mayday responded that their degraded equipment made it difficult to detect their attackers. Before Crosshair could venture outside the depot, local raiders launched an attack on the depot and killed Veetch. Meanwhile, Crosshair moved to the east side of the depot, while Mayday went to the west side, in an attempt to capture the raiders. Before the clones could successfully launch an attack on the insurgents, with Crosshair taking position at a watchtower located in the depot, the shuttle that had transported Lieutenant Nolan and Crosshair to the depot exploded, killing Hexx. Crosshair, temporarily blinded by the explosion, removed his helmet and managed to snipe one of the raiders. The shot wasn't immediately fatal, as the raider limped away, leaving a trail of blood behind.

Crosshair subsequently followed the blood trail to a cave just outside the depot before discovering that Mayday had followed him. The two clones returned to the depot, where Mayday placed Hexx and Veetch's clone trooper helmets on a crate with at least nine other clone trooper helmets to honor them. At that moment, Nolan arrived and immediately ordered Mayday to dispatch his men to retrieve two crates of cargo that had been stolen during the raid. Mayday explained that Hexx and Veetch had died in the ambush. Nolan then ordered Crosshair and Mayday to recover the cargo stolen by the raiders. Mayday stated that they lacked sufficient gear and manpower to recover the crates, but Nolan dismissed his claim and sent the two troopers out anyway.

Crosshair and Mayday then departed the outpost and followed the blood trail found after the raiders' attack to a hideout. Although the two clones successfully eliminated the camp full of raiders, Mayday sustained critical injuries during the aftermath of the attack on the raiders' camp, when an avalanche caused by Crosshair shooting a pile of land mines caught both troopers on the way down the mountain. Before the avalanche struck, the duo discovered the cargo that Mayday’s soldiers had died protecting: TK stormtrooper gear.

The next day, Crosshair and Mayday returned to the outpost empty-handed while three Rho-class transport shuttles carrying TK stormtroopers arrived and began loading the cargo from the depot onto the shuttles. Due to Mayday’s injuries, he was near death, so Crosshair pleaded with Nolan to get a medic and help Mayday. However, Nolan refused and passively watched as Mayday succumbed to his injuries. Enraged, Crosshair drew his blaster pistol and fatally shot Nolan. Crosshair then lost consciousness from the arduous journey back to the outpost, and TK stormtroopers apprehended him.

Decommissioning

Once the TK gear was fully transferred off-world, the depot was shut down and abandoned. The helmets of Mayday’s squad, including his own, were left scattered inside, and all power to the complex was severed, with the exception of the high-frequency perimeter sensor beacons which kept the native ice wyrm at bay, preventing them from destroying the facilities. The buildings were soon covered with ice and the entrance was buried under the snow.

Clone Force 99 inside the depot

After escaping from Tantiss Base together with Omega, Crosshair brought his fellow Clone Force 99 troopers Hunter, Wrecker, and Echo back to the depot to use the on-site terminal to access Nala Se's datapad, which Omega had taken from the base. Hoping to find the coordinates of the base to rescue the clones still trapped there, the Bad Batch successfully infiltrated the abandoned base and found the terminal. They then powered off the perimeter sensors to restore enough power to the computers to be able to access the datapad; although successful, they found out that it only contained medical information. While at the base, Crosshair placed the helmets of Mayday’s squad back to the way they had been during Mayday’s time at the depot, as a way of remembrance to his fallen brothers.

Meanwhile, with the perimeter disabled, an ice wyrm wandering nearby slipped through and attacked the team, forcing them to lock themselves inside for protection. The team devised a high-risk plan to distract the wyrm and lead it outside the perimeter, while Wrecker would power up the sensors through the backup fuse box, locking the beast outside. Despite Hunter falling unto the wyrm's tunnels and almost getting trapped, Crosshair and the lurca hound Batcher managed to open a hole in the ice in time and free him before Omega activated the sensors. The team then dug out their now partially buried ship Remora and departed Barton IV.

Behind the scenes

The depot was initially featured in "The Outpost," the twelfth episode of the second season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch. It was made available on March 8, 2023.
