Kho Phon Farrus

Kho Phon Farrus, an Alcedian archaeologist identifying as non-binary, harbored a deep fascination for the dark side of the Force and esoteric occult practices. They were enrolled at the University of Bar'leth concurrently with Chelli Lona Aphra, Sana Starros, and Eustacia Okka. During the Imperial Era, Farrus became obsessed with the dark side cult known as the Ascendant, actively seeking their artifacts. The acquisition of an Ascendant Thought Dowser on the planet Coruscant resulted in a reunion with Doctor Aphra and the smuggler Sana Starros. Due to past manipulation and betrayal at the hands of Aphra, they vowed to become her ultimate adversary.

Biography

Betrayal on Bar'leth

Kho Phon Farrus, a non-binary individual, belonged to the avian Alcedian species. Sometime between 11 BBY and 3 BBY, on the orientation day for new students at the University of Bar'leth, Farrus's attempt to register was thwarted by the registrar because the name "Kho" did not align with the student's outdated Imperial chain code. Chelli Lona Aphra, another student, witnessed this predicament. Aphra intervened, feigning familiarity with Farrus and claiming an error in their identification. Despite the registrar's suspicions, Farrus was permitted to proceed.

When Farrus questioned Aphra's intervention, she professed a desire for friendship. She then solicited Farrus's assistance in helping her, Sana Starros, and Eustacia Okka break into Sava Iglan'tine Nos' office, an area Aphra was prohibited from entering. She instructed Farrus to simply grant them access, assuring them that the group would handle the rest. Aphra defended her intentions to Farrus by stating that archaeology was essentially theft. When Farrus used a keycard to unlock the office door, Iglan'tine Nos was present inside. Aphra, Starros, and Okka stealthily entered through the window and pilfered nearly half of Sava's collection, while Farrus bore the blame. Sava advocated for Farrus's expulsion, but the motion was defeated.

Notwithstanding the circumstances of Farrus's initial encounter with Sava Nos, they enrolled in her class. Nos, the Head of Occult Archaeological Studies, observed the student's keen interest in her field. In Sava Nos's class, Aphra requested Farrus's help with "another idea," but their conversation was interrupted when Nos assigned the class to translate the Ascendant's Mantra.

Investigating the Ascendant

Years following their education on Bar'leth, Farrus journeyed to Tase Somer's residence and took part in an Ascendant ritual, severing the hands of several humanoids using a knife. Aphra and Starros forcibly entered the building after the ritual had concluded, searching for an Ascendant artifact. The pair encountered Farrus, who dramatically declared themselves to be Aphra's "sworn nemesis." Unlike Starros, Aphra recognized Farrus and was alarmed by their presence. Farrus employed the Whip of Sorrows to absorb the energy from Starros's blaster and redirected it towards Aphra's electro-tattooed arm. Aphra tricked Farrus into turning around and shot them in the side. They used calling gloves to hurl the severed hands at Aphra and Starros before making their escape through a window.

On Brentaal IV, The Archivist inquired about Farrus's progress in locating the Spark Eternal. Farrus utilized Tase Somer's black market network to locate Ascendant artifacts and murder their owners across various planets. Farrus was reciting the Ascendant's Mantra when their droid notified them about a listing for what Farrus believed to be a Seeker's Crown. They were ambushed by Aphra and Starros on Midarr but managed to escape.

Farrus visited Sava Nos's office at the University of Bar'leth and demanded that she lead them to the Unyielding Heart, which she revealed was a location, not an object as they had assumed. Nos discovered Aphra and Starros trailing them and raised her blaster, but Aphra gained the advantage and Farrus's calling gloves—with Farrus wearing them—were drawn towards a magnet. When the Spark Eternal killed Aphra, Farrus remarked that it was the opposite of its intended function, and they expressed disbelief when Aphra was resurrected.

Personality and traits

Kho Phon Farrus possessed hair that transitioned from a deep pink to purple, styled in a chin-length cut around their face but worn in a long tail down their back. They had light gray skin with feathers present on their arms. Their eyes were characterized by black irises and yellow sclera.

Aphra described Farrus as "spooky" and likened their obsession with the Ascendant to her father's with the Ordu Aspectu. Despite Farrus's academic intelligence, they were easily deceived by Aphra on multiple occasions. She tricked Farrus into looking away from her by feigning the presence of something behind them, and they were fooled by Aphra's fabricated auction listing of "some kind of Ascendant diadem." According to Sana Starros, Farrus had been pleasant, reserved, and timid during their time at the University of Bar'leth. Sava Iglan'tine Nos considered Farrus's translation of the Ascendant's Mantra to be the best among her students, and regarded them as an overachiever.

Equipment

Kho Phon Farrus favored black, layered attire, including an open, hooded robe worn over a sleeveless tunic and pants. Farrus utilized various pieces of Ascendant technology, such as calling gloves and the Whip of Sorrows.

Behind the scenes

Kho Phon Farrus made their debut appearance in the sixteenth issue of the 2020 comic series Star Wars: Doctor Aphra. The issue was penned by Alyssa Wong, illustrated by Minkyu Jung, and published by Marvel Comics on November 17, 2021. Wong created the character, describing them as one of their "non-binary Star Wars kids". Wong initially envisioned Farrus as a one-time villain in a single story arc, but they grew fond of the character and decided to incorporate them as a recurring cast member. For Pride Month in June 2022, Farrus was showcased on the Pride variant cover of the second issue of the 2022 comic series Star Wars: Obi-Wan.
