After the Spark Eternal took possession of the renegade archaeologist and Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra, the smuggler Sana Starros and the archaeologist Kho Phon Farrus put together a team. This team included Aphra's father Korin Aphra, two of her former romantic partners, rebel Captain Magna Tolvan and Professor Eustacia Okka, along with Detta Yao, a student from the University of Bar'leth. Their mission was to liberate Aphra from the Spark Eternal's grasp and then hand both of them over to Lady Domina Tagge of the House of Tagge. Starros and Farrus also tried, unsuccessfully, to enlist Vulaada Klam, someone Aphra cared for, into their group. Once the crew was complete, they journeyed to Birukay, a planet in the Outer Rim, where they found Aphra's droids, 0-0-0 and BT-1. Finding themselves bored, the droids decided to join Starros.
Subsequently, the team traveled to the Vermillion, which served as the Fortress-Flagship for Crimson Dawn. The Spark had gone there to acquire Ascendant technology. Ultimately, the crew failed to rescue Aphra from the Spark Eternal. The Spark then seized control of the two droids and also convinced Farrus to defect from the crew and join Crimson Dawn. As the Spark departed the Vermillion aboard the Ark Angel IV, the crew attempted to pursue them in Starros' starship, the Volt Cobra, but the Spark destroyed the Cobra and escaped.
Just Lucky and Ariole Yu rescued the crew from the wreckage of the Volt Cobra. They took them to Ronen Tagge's penthouse in Canto Bight on the planet Cantonica, where Tagge placed Starros and her crew in bacta tanks. After their recovery, he tried to recruit them into his service, offering to cover the cost of their healing. Starros declined Ronen's offer, not wanting to cross Ronen's aunt, Domina. Ronen then revealed his alliance with Crimson Dawn and his ambition to overthrow his aunt and seize control of the Tagge Corporation. Convinced that Crimson Dawn and its leader, Lady Qi'ra, were likely to prevail, Starros changed her mind and accepted Ronen's offer. However, she suggested to Ronen that they should kill Domina instead, as merely overthrowing her would leave her as a potential future problem.
However, unbeknownst to the rest of her crew, Starros was secretly working for Domina, seeking to obtain proof of her nephew's betrayal. The crew, along with Lucky and Yu, then traveled to Domina's flagship, the Acquisitor, where they witnessed the Tagges at war. Eventually, they reached the ship's bridge, where they fought against the crew of the bounty hunter Boushh and Domina herself. Ronen then arrived and declared himself the new leader of the company. After Ronen drew a blaster and aimed it at his aunt, Starros asked Domina if that was sufficient evidence for her, to which she replied that she supposed it was. Domina then executed Ronen. Following this, Starros told Domina she had fulfilled her part of their agreement and demanded payment, requesting that all of their debts, including Chelli's, be cleared, the release of Korin and Okka, who Ronen had held hostage to ensure the crew's cooperation, and finally, a new Volt Cobra. Domina agreed to clear their debts and then offered them a job, stating that she paid very well. The crew declined the offer, stating that they had places to go, people to see, and scores to settle. The group then reunited with Korin and Okka, who had been released, before setting out to find Farrus. Upon arriving at Farrus' location, Yao confronted them, telling Farrus they had a lot to answer for, but Farrus interrupted, claiming to know where Aphra, the Spark Eternal, and Crimson Dawn were. Farrus then informed the crew that they knew what Crimson Dawn leader Lady Qi'ra was planning, what she had already done, and that it would lead to their demise.
