Kuiil

Kuiil was a male Ugnaught who dedicated his life to achieving freedom from servitude. He sought tranquility on the remote planet of Arvala-7, where he worked as a vapor farmer, offering his expertise to those who could afford his services. As the New Republic era unfolded, his peaceful existence was disrupted by the arrival of criminals and mercenaries. At some point, Kuiil crossed paths with Din Djarin, a Mandalorian bounty hunter. Offering his assistance, Kuiil aided Djarin in rescuing Grogu, the child who had attracted the criminals to the planet. However, Jawas had stripped Djarin's ship, the Razor Crest, rendering him unable to leave. Kuiil then assisted him in negotiating with the Jawas for the return of his ship parts and helped with the repairs. Djarin offered Kuiil a place alongside him, acknowledging his skills, but Kuiil respectfully declined, choosing to remain on Arvala-7. Soon after, Djarin returned to Kuiil, seeking his help in confronting an Imperial remnant on Nevarro. Kuiil accepted and joined Djarin's team. While the others advanced, Kuiil watched over Grogu, but scout troopers on speeder bikes found him, fatally shooting him.

Biography

Life as an Imperial Slave and on Arvala-7

Born several centuries before 9 ABY, Kuiil, an Ugnaught, was an indentured servant for the Galactic Empire, where his mechanical and crafting abilities were exploited. He spent time working on the gene farms. After years of service, Kuiil earned his freedom, repaid his clan's debts, and journeyed to the isolated desert world of Arvala-7, seeking solitude as a moisture farmer. However, the New Republic Era saw the intrusion of criminals and mercenaries onto Arvala-7.

The Life of a Moisture Farmer

Encounter with the Mandalorian

In 9 ABY, Kuiil discovered Din Djarin, the Mandalorian bounty hunter, under attack by two blurrgs. He rescued Djarin and brought him back to his moisture farm. They discussed Djarin's job, and Kuiil revealed that numerous bounty hunters had sought the same asset, disrupting the peace of the quiet planet. Following their conversation, Kuiil decided to teach Djarin how to ride a blurrg to reach the Nikto mercenary encampment where his target was held. As Djarin struggled, Kuiil motivated him with tales of his ancestors who rode the great mythosaur. Afterward, they journeyed to the encampment, where Kuiil wished Djarin luck and returned to his farm.

Negotiating with the Jawas

Some time passed, and Djarin returned to Kuiil's farm, having successfully retrieved his bounty, but explained that local Jawas had looted his ship, the Razor Crest, leaving him stranded. Kuiil was surprised that Djarin was alive and that Grogu was the reason for the bounty hunters' presence. Kuiil agreed to assist Djarin in recovering his ship parts, suggesting negotiation with the Jawas instead of violence.

The next morning, Kuiil escorted Djarin and Grogu to the Jawas' sandcrawler. Initially, the Jawas feared the Mandalorian, who had killed several of them the previous day in an attempt to retrieve his parts. However, Kuiil convinced Djarin to lower his weapons and attempt peaceful negotiation. The Jawas agreed to trade the Razor Crest's salvaged parts in exchange for Djarin's beskar armor or Grogu, both of which Djarin refused. When Djarin threatened the Jawas with his flamethrower after his attempt to communicate in their language was met with laughter and comparisons to a Wookiee, Kuiil took over the negotiations. Eventually, the Jawas agreed to return the stolen parts if Djarin obtained a mudhorn egg for them, an offer Djarin accepted.

Kuiil, Djarin, and Grogu traveled inside the Jawas' sandcrawler to the mudhorn's nest. Upon arrival, Djarin, armed, and with Grogu, set off to find the mudhorn. The Jawas grew impatient and began to leave, despite Kuiil's protests. However, Djarin returned with the egg, his armor damaged and covered in mud. Kuiil was relieved to see his friends safe and commented on the length of time it took, to which Djarin replied he was surprised Kuiil had waited. Kuiil helped Djarin load his parts onto the hoversled and they rode back to the moisture farm. During the journey, Kuiil inquired about Grogu's well-being, and Djarin explained how he had helped him kill the mudhorn, though he didn't think he was physically injured. Kuiil admitted he didn't understand what happened, and Djarin confessed he didn't either.

Repairing the Razor Crest

Arriving at the remains of the Razor Crest, Djarin remarked that repairs would take days without a proper facility. Kuiil helped Djarin fix the ship, acknowledging the extensive work needed. Together, they repaired and restored the ship's systems and components. Later, Djarin expressed his gratitude and offered Kuiil a share of the bounty's reward, as well as a position on the crew, acknowledging his abilities and offering generous pay. Kuiil, honored, declined both offers, stating his lifelong pursuit of freedom from servitude. Djarin understood and thanked Kuiil. Kuiil thanked Djarin for bringing peace to his valley before mounting his blurrg. Before departing, he blessed Grogu, hoping for a significant reward for Djarin.

Rebuilding IG-11

After Djarin departed Arvala-7, Kuiil went to the Nikto encampment where Grogu had been held and where Djarin had shot IG-11, the assassin droid turned bounty hunter. Kuiil recovered IG-11's remains and brought them back to his farm. Despite the limited remains of the neural harness, he rebuilt and reprogrammed the droid, claiming it as his own under the Charter of the New Republic. Kuiil patiently trained IG-11 to perform domestic and manual tasks around the farm, such as cooking, cleaning, and feeding the blurrgs. Over time, IG-11 developed a personality based on his experiences with Kuiil.

Reunion with the Mandalorian

Djarin returns to Arvala-7 to ask Kuiil for help.

Sometime later, Djarin returned to Kuiil's moisture farm with Grogu and Cara Dune, the ex-Rebellion shock trooper. Kuiil remarked on Grogu's lack of growth and suggested he wasn't genetically engineered due to his evolved appearance. He also joked about Dune being farmed in the Cytocaves of Nora before Djarin introduced them. Kuiil mentioned his service in the war on the "other side."

When IG-11 entered, Dune and Djarin aimed their blasters at him. Kuiil explained that he had found the droid's remains in the Nikto encampment and repaired and reprogrammed him. Djarin explained his return to Arvala-7 was to enlist Kuiil's help in watching over Grogu while he joined Greef Karga on Nevarro to eliminate the Client. Kuiil, however, was unwilling to enter into another's service, having freed himself from indentured servitude. Nonetheless, the Mandalorian wanted to hire him, so Kuiil offered to reprogram IG-11 as Grogu's nanny. Djarin, distrustful of droids, eventually agreed to let the droid join their mission. Kuiil refused payment, stating he was protecting Grogu from Imperial slavery. He also insisted on bringing his blurrgs, to which Djarin agreed, penning the beasts inside the Razor Crest's cargo hold.

Journey to Nevarro

Arrival on Nevarro

During the voyage, Djarin and Dune engaged in arm wrestling. Grogu, perceiving danger to the Mandalorian, used the Force choke on Dune until Djarin assured him she was a friend. Kuiil commented on Grogu's curiosity and understanding of Djarin's encounter with the mudhorn, though he couldn't name the phenomenon. Dune questioned Kuiil's escape from Imperial indentured servitude, and he replied that he bought his freedom with his skills and three human lifetimes of labor, telling her not to doubt him. Later, Djarin asked Kuiil to pad Grogu's pram. Kuiil agreed, committing to build a better one to prove his freedom through craftsmanship.

The Razor Crest landed in a remote area of Nevarro, where they were met by Karga and four bounty hunters. Karga explained that he had arranged the rendezvous in a remote location because ex-Imperial forces now controlled the town. Karga suggested Dune stay behind to guard the ship from Jawas, but Djarin insisted she join them, with IG-11 staying behind instead. Karga agreed, but told Dune to cover her rebel tattoo. They agreed that Djarin, Dune, and Kuiil would ride the blurrgs, while Karga and his men walked.

That night, they set up a campfire and grilled a four-legged beast. The team reviewed their plan to enter the common house, show the bait to the Client, and kill him at the table. Suddenly, several native reptavians attacked the group. Two of Karga's men and two blurrgs were killed, and Karga sustained a poisoned bite that Grogu healed with the Force heal, to the amazement of everyone.

The following day, the group continued their journey. Karga and his two remaining men attempted to ambush Djarin and Dune, but Karga had a change of heart and killed his men. Karga explained that their initial plan was to kill them and take Grogu, but the infant's saving his life changed his mind. Karga tried to convince Djarin and Dune not to kill him, explaining that Grogu wouldn't be safe with him dead, but they didn't listen until Kuiil convinced them to hear Karga out. The four agreed to send Dune and Karga in with Djarin pretending to be their prisoner, using Grogu's empty pram as a decoy to get close to the Client and kill him. Djarin instructed Kuiil to take Grogu back to the Razor Crest on the surviving blurrg and activate the ground security protocols upon arrival. Kuiil vowed to protect Grogu and told Dune to cover her stripes.

Death

Later, as Kuiil rode his blurrg back to the Razor Crest with Grogu, Djarin contacted him through his comlink, urging him to flee. Unfortunately, two scout troopers on speeder bikes intercepted the conversation and began to pursue Kuiil. As Kuiil approached the Razor Crest, he lowered the ramp. However, before Kuiil reached the ship, he and his blurrg were shot and killed by one of the scout troopers. A trooper seized Grogu to return him to Moff Gideon.

Shortly after, Djarin tried to contact Kuiil again, but IG-11 answered, informing the Mandalorian that Kuiil had been terminated, but he had successfully recovered Grogu and was fulfilling his base structure to nurse and protect.

After completing his mission, Djarin returned to the Razor Crest with Grogu and buried Kuiil's body, placing his goggle cap on the headstone.

Legacy

During an investigation on the independent planet Plazir-15 concerning malfunctions of droids, Djarin, accompanied by Bo-Katan Kryze, another Mandalorian, met the Ugnaught workers who reprogrammed the droids. Djarin declared himself a friend of Kuiil, whose name was enough to gain the Ugnaughts' attention.

Personality and Traits

Kuiil possessed kindness, wisdom, and gentleness. He had some knowledge of Mandalorian culture, telling Djarin that his ancestors had learned to ride the great mythosaurs when Djarin struggled to master blurrg riding. Kuiil was skilled with machines, helping Djarin fix his ship after Jawas scrapped it and tinkering with the destroyed bounty hunter IG-11, successfully reprogramming him. Kuiil's relationship with Djarin was an unexpected but warm friendship, with Djarin even honoring Kuiil by burying him after his sacrifice.

Behind the Scenes

Kuiil debuted in the first episode of the 2019 Disney+ television series The Mandalorian, which aired on November 12, 2019. Misty Rosas portrayed him, and Nick Nolte provided his voice.
