Blurrg

A blurrg (pluralized as blurrg or blurrgs) represented a non-sentient, two-legged reptilian animal species utilized as a beast of burden across numerous locations in the galaxy. Of particular note, blurrgs were employed by both the Twi'lek Resistance and the Free Ryloth Movement during the historical periods of the Clone Wars and the Imperial Era. Furthermore, the moisture farmer Kuiil also kept and managed them on Arvala-7.

Biology and appearance

Blurrgs were non-sentient reptilian creatures with two limbs, functioning as beasts of burden on various planets throughout the galaxy, including both Endor and Ryloth. They possessed short arms ending in clawed fingers, along with a robust tail that aided in maintaining balance. These creatures had large mouths equipped with numerous sharp teeth, enabling them to chew through a wide array of materials, such as grasses and weeds, though they were not exclusively herbivores and were known to consume other organisms, sometimes even their own kind. The hip joint, connecting their sturdy hind legs to their body, was positioned unusually high. Their height ranged from approximately 2.5 to 3 meters.

Blurrgs generally exhibited dark colorations, spanning dark blue, green, gray, brown, and black, often accompanied by lighter mottled patterns in shades of lighter blue or orange. Cham Syndulla, a Rebel leader, owned a blurrg with white markings on its head. Depending on the specific breed, blurrgs typically lived for about thirty-five to forty standard years.

Despite their somewhat clumsy appearance, blurrgs were capable of achieving high speeds when running. During the Battle of Ryloth, they demonstrated the ability to easily outpace the All Terrain Reconnaissance Transports utilized by the Republic's Lightning Squadron, which could reach speeds of up to 75 kph on flat ground. Reports also indicated they could match the speed of Imperial speeders.

Behavior

Blurrgs, known for their stoicism and strength, were used for a variety of purposes, ranging from agricultural tasks and transportation to warfare. Their versatility made them suitable for various kinds of service in spite of their limited intelligence. They were also powerful enough to carry substantial loads. In agricultural settings, blurrgs were commonly employed by farmers for tasks such as moving equipment or clearing vegetation like weeds and grass.

Certain blurrgs could also display a hostile temperament when provoked. In one instance, when a member of the Twi'lek Resistance invited a clone to ride his blurrg, the animal roared and bucked, preventing the clone from successfully controlling it. Their tendency towards viciousness when provoked made them valuable in combat situations. It is also noted that male blurrgs were consumed by females following the mating process.

History

During the Clone Wars, when the Confederacy of Independent Systems launched an invasion of the planet Ryloth, the Twi'lek Resistance, under the leadership of Cham Syndulla, possessed blurrgs which they employed as mounts. They established a hideout within the wreckage of a Separatist ship, creating stables for their blurrg mounts inside.

When Syndulla and the Resistance encountered Jedi General Mace Windu and the Grand Army of the Republic's Lightning Squadron during a battle, they agreed to cooperate in order to reclaim the capital city of Lessu. During the final assault on Separatist forces within Lessu, several of the freedom fighters rode blurrgs, charging towards droid troops alongside the AT-RTs used by the clone troopers. During the time of the Mission to Zygerria, blurrgs were traded in the markets of Zygerria.

During the Imperial Era, Syndulla's Free Ryloth Movement continued their use of blurrgs. Following the occupation of the Tann Province, Syndulla and Numa rode blurrgs during a raid on an Imperial Troop Transport, accompanied by Syndulla's daughter Hera. They eventually rode into Hera's ship, the Ghost, to escape incoming Imperial reinforcements.

Kuiil riding one of his blurrgs during the New Republic Era

By 9 ABY, the Ugnaught Kuiil operated a small moisture farm on the planet Arvala-7, where he maintained several domesticated blurrgs that he used for transportation across the rough terrain. When the bounty hunter Din Djarin traveled to Arvala-7 after accepting a job from the Client, he encountered Kuiil. Kuiil assisted him in learning to ride a blurrg and then loaned him one for travel. Later, Djarin returned to Kuiil's farm to request that the Ugnaught accompany him to Nevarro on a mission. Kuiil agreed, on the condition that he could bring his blurrgs. The creatures were transported in the cargo hold of the Razor Crest. During the mission, the blurrgs were killed during an attack by native reptavians. Subsequently, Kuiil traveled with Grogu back to the Razor Crest on the remaining blurrg, but was ambushed by scout troopers, who killed both Kuiil and his blurrg before taking Grogu back to the city.

Behind the scenes

Within the Star Wars canon, blurrgs initially appeared in "Liberty on Ryloth," an episode of the animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars that was first broadcast in 2009. In the Star Wars Legends continuity, blurrgs made their debut in the 1985 television film Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, drawing inspiration from a creature originally sketched for the 1980 film Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. Their canonical live-action debut occurred in "Chapter 1: The Mandalorian," the inaugural episode of the Disney+ television series The Mandalorian's first season, which premiered on November 12, 2019. It is important to note that their earlier Legends appearance in The Battle for Endor was also presented in live action.
