Morton San Tekka

During the High Republic Era, a male human named Morton San Tekka, a member of the esteemed San Tekka clan, played a significant role. Around 382 BBY, Chancellor Mollo of the Galactic Republic selected him to act as a mediator at the summit on Jedha. Mollo's decision stemmed from the belief that someone connected to the Galactic Frontier would be a more suitable choice than a Republic elected official.

Biography

Summit on Jedha

Following the conclusion of the Eiram and E'ronoh War marked by the wedding of Xiri A'lbaran and Phan-tu Zenn, Morton San Tekka took on the role of mediator at the summit on Jedha. The Church of the Force, with which the San Tekka clan maintained ties, designated Keth Cerepath, an adjunct, as the primary contact between the Church and Morton San Tekka.

At the summit's reception party, a few hours prior to its commencement, Morton San Tekka and Keth Cerepath encountered Jedi Master Creighton Sun. After introductions, San Tekka and Sun engaged in a conversation about the impending summit and San Tekka's responsibilities. San Tekka expressed his honor, yet also a degree of apprehension, given his lack of experience as an elected official or politician and the unusual nature of a San Tekka overseeing such a critical event. However, Sun reassured him that this was precisely why Chancellor Mollo had selected him over someone like Meldan, the chairperson of the Republic committee on Jedha. Morton San Tekka then voiced his concerns regarding the presence of Eiram's and E'ronoh's military transports in the skies above Jedha and his worries that the summit might not proceed smoothly. Sun, however, expressed his confidence in both worlds and their dedication to achieving peace. San Tekka expressed his gratitude to Sun for his reassurance and acknowledged the Jedi's efforts.

However, on the day of the summit, Cerepath was tardy due to oversleeping. Upon arriving at the Second Spire, the designated location for the treaty signing, San Tekka briefed Cerepath on the summit's agenda. He informed Cerepath about a planned celebration following the summit, although Cerepath's attendance was not mandatory. San Tekka even jested that he, too, would not be staying for an extended period. Subsequently, he requested Cerepath to fetch him a glass of water.

As the summit got underway, San Tekka delivered a speech introducing the ambassadors of the two worlds, Lian Cerox and Tintak. Following his address, just as the Eiram–E'ronoh peace treaty was about to be signed, the Second Spire came under attack by the Brotherhood of the Ninth Door, resulting in San Tekka's death in the ensuing explosion.

Legacy

Cerepath arrived immediately after Morton San Tekka's death in the bombing. Aida Forte and Creighton Sun, both Jedi, informed him of the tragic events. Cerepath was deeply saddened by San Tekka's passing, feeling responsible for not being present.

Sun and Forte pondered the nature of the attack, considering the possibility of a targeted assassination attempt on Morton San Tekka. Cerepath offered his assistance to Jedi Master Silandra Sho in the investigations.

Tilson Graf, a disowned member of the Graf clan, later assumed the role of mediator at the rescheduled summit. However, Keth Cerepath and Silandra Sho uncovered that Tilson Graf was among the masterminds behind the bombing of the Second Spire and the battle of Jedha. When commissioning Mytion of the Brotherhood of the Ninth Door to bomb the Second Spire, Tilson Graf specifically requested that Morton San Tekka be eliminated, as he had been a source of irritation for the Graf family for years.

Personality and traits

Morton San Tekka possessed a kind and generous nature, coupled with a sense of duty and conscientiousness. When San Tekka's attendant, Keth Cerepath, overslept on the day of the summit, San Tekka responded with composure and understanding. Furthermore, he was a trusting individual, openly sharing his genuine feelings about the post-summit celebration with Cerepath, jokingly cautioning him not to disclose them to others.

Behind the scenes

Morton San Tekka made an appearance in the 2023 audio drama titled The High Republic: The Battle of Jedha, penned by George Mann as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project. Philip Hernandez provided the voice for the character.
