In the space surrounding the desert planet, the Black Squadron pilots, who are outnumbered, consisting of Temmin Wexley, L'ulo L'ampar, Karé Kun, and Jessika Pava, engage in combat against Terex's squadron of Ranc Gang "Uglies".
When N1-ZX refuses to fight the Ranc Gang, Poe Dameron reaches out to Temmin for assistance. Upon discovering that N1-ZX is a BX-series droid commando, Temmin transmits a droid personality matrix containing the persona of his former B1-series battle droid, Mister Bones, into Poe's comlink. He then projects the comlink against N1-ZX's transmitter, causing the droid to adopt the personality of Mister Bones. "Mister Bones" proceeds to decimate the Ranc Gang, while Temmin recounts his childhood experiences to Poe.
Returning to the space battle, Karé's X-wing sustains damage. As three "Uglies" close in for the final blow, Karé is rescued at the last moment when Terex's flagship, the Carrion Spike, inexplicably initiates an assault on the smaller fighters. Terex's crew, including Brrang, discovers that an unknown entity has locked them out of their control systems and deployed the ship's escape pods. This entity is revealed to be Oddy Muva and the freed slaves, who have successfully escaped Terex's ship. Oddy instructs Black Squadron to provide covering fire to ensure their safe descent to the surface.
In the meantime, "Mister Bones" celebrates his triumph, only to be shot and decapitated by Terex, who demands Poe's surrender. However, Poe retaliates by knocking Terex to the ground and confronting him with his blaster. Back in space, Black Squadron endeavors to shield the escape pods from Terex's "Uglies." One of the "Uglies" obliterates an escape pod, prompting an enraged L'ulo to retaliate by shooting down the attacking ship. Oddy consoles his wife, Sowa, as their escape pod descends toward the desert. L'ulo's A-wing starfighter is destroyed by an "Ugly."
Returning to the cave setting, Terex throws a knife into Poe's hand, causing him to drop his weapon. Before Terex can deliver the finishing blow with a vibroblade, BB-8 intervenes by electrocuting him. Poe expresses his gratitude to BB-8, while the gangsters regain control of the Carrion Spike's systems and launch a renewed assault on Black Squadron. Simultaneously, three escape pods approach the desert planet's surface. Temmin detects a First Order Maxima-A class heavy cruiser and TIE/fo space superiority fighter emerging from hyperspace. The First Order vessels proceed to destroy the Carrion Spike and Terex's "Uglies."
The First Order also deploys an Atmospheric Assault Lander and several TIE escorts to the surface of the desert planet. Poe and BB-8 are greeted by Commander Malarus, who discloses that she has arrived to apprehend the disobedient Terex, who has been operating outside the First Order's established protocols. Poe plays a message from Temmin, which relays the destruction of Terex's fleet, including the Carrion Spike. When Terex points out that Poe lost one of his fighter pilots, Poe retorts that he lost a friend, while Terex lost "everything." Before handing Terex over to Commander Malarus and her stormtroopers, he informs Terex that his battle is concluded, whereas his own is just beginning.
